I love the gutsiness of those old Charger teams. They pick off Marino deep in their own territory...Fouts dropping back to his own goal line and he's just firing bombs (Duckworth catches the 2nd one) just a fun offense that felt they could move the ball at will and weren't afraid of mistakes Duckworth had such an unreal/bizarre season regarding YPC. 700+ receiving yards...25 catches. The Miami defense actually forced the San Diego offense into a three and out on three different occasions. 35:46 to 37:42 1:13:00 to 1:16:00 1:18:50 to 1:21:15 Not bad. Nevertheless, the Dolphins gave up 537 yards total offense to the Chargers. Fouts completed 37 passes. San Diego averaged over 4.6 yards a run. San Diego had the ball for 93 plays compared to 63 plays for Miami. This was a total defensive disaster for Miami. Only the 49ers in the Super Bowl would blast them worse than this all season long.

That's not even close to being true. In 1982, they tried to win the Super Bowl with David Woodley at QB. No way. After Marino came, the defense collapsed. They were a good team but not anywhere close to the NFC teams. And they certainly weren't dominant on the defensive side. As for today, the Dolphins would get killed. The teams today are much bigger and faster and more athletic. I went to night law school with Ed Newman, guard for the Dolphins. He was a big man by normal standards, but a midget by today's standards. Those teams would have no chance against the teams of today.

Woody Bennett on a run fumbles the ball away at the SD 1 which really costs them the game. In their other regular season loss to the Raiders, Pete Johnson gets stopped on a 4th & goal at the Raider 1, another lost 7 points.
