It's easy to overlook how important Steve Fuller was to the '85 Bears. When Jim MacMahon went down I remember a lot of sports writers/broadcasters giving the Bears a slim chance of success.
@SECRETARIATguy2242 жыл бұрын
Very good point. His numbers didn't tell the story of how good a job he did for the Bears in 85 when McMahon had the bad shoulder.
@igorslocks2 жыл бұрын
Steve Fuller was a Godsend because he could deal with Ditka's tyrannical ass. Harbaugh couldn't as a young player. Mike Tomczak was given mental health issues for life from Ditka. Fuller was awesome and remember meeting him at fan appreciation day in 85 & he was such a great man. Let me say Ditka was one of the worst coaches in NFL History when you look back on the entirety of the Bears progression. Only winning 1title was criminal - anyone could have coached in 85 & Chicago was winning, those players coached that team. 87 they choked because Ditka rammed Flutie(who wasn't ready yet, only signed in November/December) down team's throat as starter. When you look at what Ditka did w/ whole Chunkys soup commercial fiasco- tells it all. Egomaniac. Joke as an offensive 'coach'. And apparently a racist at worst or flat stupid at best. Case closed.
@SECRETARIATguy2242 жыл бұрын
You obviously watched the team play back then, and saw how Fuller's numbers didn't tell the story of how good a job he did while McMahon had that bad shoulder. I salute you, and even though I don't have as extreme a view on Ditka as you do, I can certainly understand and respect your view. Ditka-worshippers irritate the hell out of me. The truth is more nuanced . . . the man has to be given credit for helping the Bears rise to the cream of the NFL from 82 to 85. However, he also must share this portion of the blame for not keeping them there. Ditka was a human being like anybody, with great strengths but also glaring weaknesses. One thing I am just sick and tired of is blaming Ditka for Payton not scoring a touchdown in the Super Bowl. I love Payton. Grew up in Chicago during that era. Cried convulsively when he died. However, he acted like a spoiled brat in that whole situation. Ditka was the one who, during the middle of that 85 season, publicly declared that he wanted Walter to have that consecutive 100 yard game NFL record [I know, I know, it's since been broken, but it was a _BIG_ deal at the time] and if you watch those games, you can _clearly_ see Ditka making certain that Walter got his 100 yards in those games, so these people that say Ditka intentionally deprived Payton of a touchdown in the Super Bowl are idiots.
@igorslocks2 жыл бұрын
@@SECRETARIATguy224 yeah honestly Ditka no doubt got the Bears first off to be able to win(my God those of us-like us- that remember the 70's & early 80's under Neill Armstrong know how pathetic the Bears oftentimes were. Those 2 playoff appearances were like UFO sightings or abductions, due in large part to AFC being the superior conference top to bottom & NFC having Dallas as king & then Minnesota & LA Rams as contenders & that's about it. Things sure did flip in the 80's w/ respect to that tho huh? NFC was so dominant from 82 on. That Chunky's Soup commercial fiasco completely cost Ditka the locker room & it was a big deal but nowadays, it would be a stake in the heart the way the league & contracts,etc are structured. Now if the guys will play for a coach- PLAY, Balls to the wall- that's 80% of it there. Just look at Baltimore. The Ravens have always respected John Harbaugh and it shows. It's rare when they come w/a lazy effort & it sure doesn't happen back2back. Obviously you know what you are talking about & are a fan w/a long memory like myself & 🤞I do gotta say, it's sure AF exciting watching Fields play QB, I just hope they spend all of that damn cap $ this off-season on OL & Some down field threats. Also re sign Montgomery. But ,again fingers crossed 🤞, you can see what is possible in say 2/3 years if they stay reasonably healthy. Hey hope you & yours have a great Thanksgiving. Be safe my man🦮🏈🦃

But if you watch the play @ 2:03:48 it's easy to see why McMahon was needed for the Bears to win it all. I'm not isolating just this one play to tear down Fuller. But it's a good example of how he was a huge step down from McMahon's talent & leadership.

I spent 15 minutes or so talking to Doug Plank, and they were joking around with everyone signing autographs, etc. We had a Gym teacher who could fly, our staff smoked them, they kept picking the gym teacher up off the floor. Fun and Charity. Great team.

Beleagured Falcons with a workmanlike approach - to a team that was breathing fire. No chance, whatsoever. Falcons with an unimaginative offensive attack, a poor punting game, a QB over shooting passes, hitting the heaters on the sideline - not receivers, and a sluggish, ineffective defense. Coach Henning could not get it done in Atlanta.

Legends of the Game : Duane Thomas. Legend in the sense that his disinterest in playing football was legendary. Amazing that when the Chargers traded for him and paid him, he still refused to show up. The draft choice the Cowboys got eventually led to either Tony Dorsett or Randy White, I think it was TD.

Originally on CBS, Tim Ryan and Johnny Morris were going to call this game but with the Bears going to prominence and the game expanded to a much wider audience, Pat and John got this game. Ryan and Morris were moved to the Redskins/ Steelers game. That week originally Pat and John were going to call Eagles/ Cowboys. The Falcons/Bears became the marquee game.

The Falcons were sadly sunk from the very beginning of the season with six straight losses, won one, then three straight losses and then repeated the same thing again to finish 4-12. They managed a 7-8-1 season in 1986 but wasn't enough to save Dan Henning's job.

I sure do miss these guys, and not just the finest ever Play-by-play team of Summerall & Madden, but also and especially § The '85 CHICAGO BEARS! 🐻 THE Greatest Football Team in the History of the NFL! § This was back in the days when Football was Football... When Players just did their jobs and actually PLAYED FOOTBALL! (imagine that!) Currently, the Players seem to believe that we Fans, (the same Fans who pay their extortionate, exorbitant salaries), actually want to hear their uninformed personal political opinions, *WE DO NOT!* All we Fans want from the NFL is the ability to kick back, relax, crack open a cold one and enjoy what used to be called 'America's Game', *WITHOUT ANY NFL EMPLOYEE COMMENTARY!* We Fans must hit them where it really hurts: their wallets! I haven't watched even one NFL game, nor have I purchased any NFL products since the chickenshit, dishonorable 'Kneeling' began! I will continue to refuse to watch games or purchase anything offered by them until the NFL stops playing frontman for the communist/Dem Party and takes action against their disrespectful Players; permanently firing any player who places their own ignorant political views ahead of their jobs! What would happen to us, the 'Average American Joe' if we acted like these damned fools at our places of work, spouting off about things which have nothing whatsoever to do with our work, disrespecting our boss, and, even worse, disrespecting our own country?! We would quickly be looking for a job! (and rightfully so) Until these BS 'SJW', so-called, 'social justice warriors' (I prefer 'SJW' 'Simpleton Jocks Without-a Clue') knock off their Holier Than Thou crap, I will remain a FORMER Fan!. These wonderful ole games will more than suffice until the 'Woke NFL' gets tired of losing money and Fans! Hey NFL, Remember: *' 'Get Woke Go Broke!'*
