Very partial to the MK2. I had an 83 Celica GTS coupe. Always liked the hatchbacks, but just happened to get a chance to get the coupe. That 22RE was bulletproof.

I enjoyed my beautiful, black, 1987 Supra 5-speed, but I replaced it with an even sexier, black, 1990 Celica Alltrac Turbo, which I love & will probably never sell. I find the Celica better in almost every way. Have never looked back or regretted it, but I do get excited anytime I see a mk3 Supra on the street, as they are still very attractive cars. BTW, if you want a sweet Japanese grand tourer, also consider a Lexus SC400 - timeless style, smooth ride, great high speed composure & incredible reliability.
@Miguelsgarage
@Miguelsgarage Жыл бұрын
Can't argue with that! The Celica Alltrac is a great car with a very different purpose than the Supra. The SC is a MKIV Supra in disguise... The father of the MKIV Supra really as it is where the MKIV Supra came from. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please consider subscribing if you haven't. I really appreciate it!

Ogg1es Plays do it , but I’d recommend a hks head gasket, arp studs a 3 inch exhaust with an upgraded turbo, intercooler, boost controller, fuel pump that’s what I have on my car right now along with a. Stage 3+ clutch but you may need new rods and bearing it all depends on how the engine was treated the problem with 7m’s is 9 times out of 10 the owner

@@pius222 the range was more like Eclipse from mitsubishi, 300ZX from Nissan ,Supra from Toyota and NSX from Honda, all 3.0L engines , the NSX was cheap but now because Airton Sena made the interior fit him perfect and died after ,now it´s ridiculous priced but same range as this i refer, the 300ZX and the Supra were the ones i liked the most , the Eclipse was amazing but a lot of electronic functions that with time might fail but related with the car stability at high speeds so i didn´t want one but bought a litle version of the eclipse with a 2.0L engine and a dash that made me travel to the 70´s sport cars, paid in 2009 3.500€ in 3rd hand, and still have it. the RX-7 from 87 two seats not the horrible 2+2 with 1.3L wankel engine 180 h.p. the dash and the driver´s positioning is perfect ,also kept it ,the 2+2 inside still using some parts in the driver´s position from the first model or late 70´s RX-7 , but i love to drive it, the two seat car

I sold my 89 Turbo Supra to help me buy my first house in 2008. It was worth the sell, but I had a void for nearly 10 years... So I picked up another 89 Supra. It’s a work in progress. But anything is possible with discipline. I saved my money for the purchase and now I feel whole again. (Even if my new ones isn’t as nice as my first Supra). Nice video, very informative.

First car i bought in 1999 was a 89 supra. Of course i almost immediately had to get the motorblock done and it was consuming oil almost at the same rate as gas. The stock radio and loudspeakers needed to be dealt with too... All in all, especially now, over 20 years later, this is not a everyday car at all. You want to preserve it and give it all the parts needed. Even stock, turning the ignition key and hearing that engine come alive and the vibration in the cockpit and stick shift, hard to find these days. The upwards bent long hood is just beautiful, and one you start to pimp up the car for some extra power, this thing becomes a beast. Lots of fun times playing with Porsche, BMW and Mercedes cars on german Autobahn.

I can still remember riding shot gun at 4 and 5 years old like a doctor lol... now these kids of the last 20 years they ride in car seats till their practically able to drive haha... But I’ll never forget how much fun it was just cruising around Dallas zipping around people... such a sporty and badass little car... we still give him a hard time to this day for not keeping it or at least trading it in for the 93 that’s worth a fortune today 😂

Great video and thanks for putting some knowledge in this brick head of mine. I’m the new owner of a 1987 Turbo Supra with 115,00.00 on the clock and everything has just been made new from bumper to bumper. Engine, turbo, transmission, all handling parts. Interior is in great shape and paint is good but I’m going to have her painted anyway. The Targa top comes off easy and she is a sweet car. I’m the owner of a 2001 Ford Lightning and Mustang Gt. Tired of everyone pulling up and having to hit the throttle in the Lightning to prove her worth. I’m ready to enjoy this Supra and let her take me all over the U.S. thanks again for a great video and look forward to learning all I can about this car and keeping her stock.

Dude, what a fantastic review! You covered so many of the great details of the MK3 Supra Turbo - some stuff I’ve never seen covered anywhere anywhere else. I once owned an 85 supra and it was fantastic but then I was able to purchase my first new car, an 87 supra turbo in pearl white. It was such an awesome vehicle for its time. Bulletproof, comfortable, very fast and great handling. I wish I still owned it and might buy another one someday if I find a clean one like the one you showed in your video. I totally cracked up when you mentioned the ball cooler. I haven’t had a vent like that in another vehicle since then and really miss that thing, as it was so nice in the summertime. This was my first time on your channel but I will definitely be checking out more and probably subscribing. Cheers.

Been driving the same 87 Turbo since 96. Had 110K now has 306K. The bones of many Supras has kept this one on the road. The way to tell a 87 from a 88 Turbo is by the shape of the 3rd brake light under the wing. 87 is rectangular, 88 is trapezoidal. 89 to 92 has it in the edge of the wing as you stated.

When checking the trunk area for rust it's also best practice to check the bottom of the antenna motor housing has the seal around the antenna tends to go bad over time allowing water to leak down inside the antenna itself and rusting out of the bottom of the motor housing and cooling water up in the passenger rear quarter

Hey guys ,I had a 90 Cressida and i swapped an 7mgte /5 speed manual . The best swap ever . I did a head gasket and new bearings but I Wasn't aware of the oil pump issues at the time. The old 7mge did have a rod knock. The Cressida body sadly rusted out after owning it after 10 years. The soul of the 7mgte went into a Volvo 240 wagon. Still doing some fine tunning and and some sensors replaced and a rebalanced driveshaft,but is fun to drive and to see the faces of the people when they see the sleeper leave them in the dust.

I've been driving my '87 turbo since 1996. Now approaching 300K miles on the body ( 3rd engine). I notice on the car you're demonstrating that there must've been a leak at the turbo cooling hose coming out of the thermostat standpipe. Tightening the hose or using plumbers putty on the 90° elbow should solve that. Was studying your engine detail for the vacuum hose clips to get them write on mine! Toyota has a webpage for Supra owners to suggest 5 parts they would like to see remade since most have been out of production for years. Parts yards are pretty much dried up and eBay is about the only place you can find hard to get parts.

The head gasket issue was because Toyota torqued the head to 45lbft of torque from the factory. The torque specs from the factory in fact was the reason for head gasket failure WITHOUT increasing boost under modification. Just an FYI from a MKIII owner since 1990. I still own one.

My dad had a 86.5 and I loved that car. One of my favourite features was the crotch vent. There is a vent right under the steering column that blows on your crotch. Wearing shorts on a hot day sitting on those leather seats and you really appreciate it. The other cool thing was the cassette/radio. It was more advanced than the large stereo unit we had in our house. It could skip songs on a cassette.

I owned two Mk III's - an 86.5 and a 91, both non-turbo w 5 speed gear boxes. They were GREAT drifting cars due to the combination of their gear boxes, weight, wheelbase, somewhat narrow width, independent rear suspension, over steer in the front end and torquey inline 6 motors. But Mk III Supra's are a real labor of love so unless you can do the work yourself or find something either well maintained or built / rebuilt, it can get awfully pricey paying a shop to do it (a C5 Corvette is a FAR better value in stock performance, handling, reliability and upgrade capability in this regard). The other issues not mentioned in the video are nagging, quirky minor electrical issues that crop up and the snappy / poppy noises from the clutches in the rear diff when cornering on the 86.5 to 89 Mk III yrs. Properly maintained / upgraded / rebuilt, the inline 6 is a very unique sounding, torquey motor that breathes well and is a good performance platform which can deliver gobs of HP with a turbo upgrade.

Unfortunately my 91 has been sitting in the garage for quite some years waiting to have the engine build completed. I'm looking for a mechanic that knows the car and engine, but it seems there aren't many out here. Would love to hear from you about possible shops in the area that could so the work.

This is a great summary of the car, just dropped nearly 20k on a forged rebuild of the 7mgte in mine, all the issues of this engine have been addressed in the rebuild but it still looks stock and making 300 hp, glad I did especially heading into the future with many people realising how good they are. Here in Australia you don't see them that often and mine was actually Australian delivered (1989) to the state of South Australia, as far as the gear shifting etc....yeah they're truck like (R154) they did use the transmission in the Landcruiser 4x4 around that era, I have an ATI harmonic balancer, Fidanza billet flywheel, stage 3 6 puck clutch and Cube Speed short throw shifter, I'm also using 15w40 Caltex Delo 400 diesel engine oil in the transmission and that coupled with the other stuff makes it pretty damn good, if you look at SAE and ISO oil viscosity charts the 15w40 is perfect, it feels better to drive than with any gear oil I have tried.

Great video Miguel. A few things off are the weights you quoted. There are a few per hundred pounds lighter for a Targa auto turbo. Also, if you want your R154 The shift superbly. Use redline MT 90. As far as horsepower goes. The 7M block can handle 1200 hp reliably 1400 HP being the limit. This is crank horsepower. I have some ideas on how to go past 1400 hp if you have the money and inclination let me know.
@Miguelsgarage
@Miguelsgarage 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks George! I seen pictures of your car! VERY CLEAN! As far as weight goes, what years are you referring to? The later cars became heavier than earlier cars. A fully loaded car came with a Targa roof, air bag, a 10-speaker audio system w/ CD player and sub woofer, 8-way adjustable driver seat, etc. With a full tank of gas these cars are in fact 3800-3900... but like I said in the video, the earlier models and those with less options do weigh less and stripped out cars have been reaching sub 3000lbs numbers.

@@georgehoneymen6045 George, I saw that on the brochures. What I failed to realize during my research was that it was with the driver included! My mistake! Thanks for keeping me honest!

I seen what happens a lot with a 7M when it's putting out 1000 horses plus, a split down the right side of the block between #2 and #4 cylinder, I wouldn't push a 7M past 700hp, you want more than that, put a 2JZ in it
@georgehoneymen6045
@georgehoneymen6045 4 жыл бұрын
Oveida Sinclair You mean a split down the left of the block. Both the JZ and the 7M do the same. Once you’re past 1400 crank horsepower on either block, this problem will show up depending on how much surface has been removed from the deck. It’s very common in JZ‘s as well. Another common problem is the cracking in the bore of cylinder one on both blocks.
