While both of these are beat up, have you BEEN in one that's like new? In the late 80s, these things were LOADED. A friend has an '88, white, with a newer Powerstroke. Gets about 14 mpg. On vegetable oil, of course. He pulls his racing lawnmowers around with it, I sh-t you not.

This was the reward. You slid through WWII in the supply depot, survived decades in a pointless Federal job and when your parents died, you bought a pasture in BFE WV or PA and put up a pre-fab house to leave Barbara watching Jim & Tammy. You missed why these things existed. Crew cab HD trucks were rare and very utilitarian. These trucks were made to haul campers in a time when vans were comfortable and trucks were not. A lot of these were owned by transportation drivers who hauled brand new campers from Indiana to points unknown to be sold at dealerships. Now they use Mega Cab Rams for the same purpose. Most retirement campground when I was a kid, also saw these things a plenty.

This. I used to have a 1977 crew cab truck and those were very rare, mostly sold into the logging industry. They were so bare bones they didn't even have a radio. The only time I've actually seen an official factory Ford blockoff plate in lieu of a radio. You didn't really see them at regular dealerships. The back doors were smaller than normal doors and the bed was a paltry 7'. The main reason the Centurion vans went away is because crew cab trucks are all over the place now with lots of room in the back so you can basically get this from the factory. Centurion also made 4-door Bronco's and you could later also get these from the factory (Ford Expedition/Excursion)

I'd just like to add a little bit of information. Although the Centurion was certainly capable of pulling a livestock or horse trailer (and many of them did) its primary use was pulling 5th wheel travel trailers. It was often even sold at RV dealerships. The idea was if you are going to purchase a large and expensive 5th wheel travel trailer why would you want to ride in a cramped utilitarian pickup truck? As you stated in the video pickup trucks since this era have gotten progressively much nicer without the need for any aftermarket upgrades rendering trucks like the Centurion redundant. A fairly consistent distinguishing feature between a truck that is designed to pull a fifth wheel travel trailer and a truck that is designed to pull a livestock or horse trailer is the type of hitch. Unless it is a bumper pull, a travel trailer will usually have a fifth wheel mount whereas most livestock / horse trailers that pull from the bed utilize a gooseneck hitch. That is a hitch that resembles a traditional-style ball hitch except mounted directly in the center of the truck bed. Other than that, good video
@CaptOrbit
@CaptOrbit 5 жыл бұрын
Also some Centurions were equipped with both a CB and a separate radio to communicate with whoever might be riding in the trailer. In some states that was (and still is) a legal requirement to allow someone to ride in the trailer.
@1978garfield
@1978garfield 5 жыл бұрын
By definition a travel trailer has a bumper pull hitch. A fifth wheel camper has a fifth wheel hitch. Don't believe me? Go to Camping World's web page and look. The categories are travel trailers, fifth wheels and motor homes. You are correct most farmers use goose neck hitches. They take up much less space in the bed.

I drove a 76 Ford Econoline which had been completely customized by my carpenter granpa and great uncle. It was kinda like these things, but done at home, and customized to my granpa's liking. It had captains chairs, bench seats that folded into bed. plus lots of storage, a working sink, toilet, CB radio, shag carpeting, and when i got it, I added a sound system featuring two 10 inch Rockford fosgate subs in a sealed enclosure, built into the storage box/bed base, plus an array of 6x9's, 4 inchers, two 8 inch Fosgate "Audiophile" mids, and Fosgate directional tweeters mounted on the A pillars. The head unit was a nice Pioneer, all powered by a Rockford fosgate 100ix for subs, and mids were powered by an additional Fosgate 60ix amp. I drove it all over the southeast in my early 20's, which was the late 90's. It was manila and brown colored. It had the horrible 351 Cleveland engine. Fun times.

Somehow, through the magic of the internet, I ended up watching a couple of videos about guys who race Dodge vans in Japan. Apparently it was started by people who needed to transport their motorcycles to the track on the weekend and went from there. All-in-all it pretty cool and different than anything I'd ever seen back then. Scary or not, my uncle loved it and drove it everywhere.

The 80's. When getting the TV strapped to the wheeled metal cart, as opposed to the film projector, meant it was going to be a good day. The 80's, when exotic cars were beautiful, unwieldy, uncomfortable pieces of trash but we all had posters of them on our bedroom walls anyway because Doug wasn't born yet. The 80's, the decade I didn't know was one day going to be sold back to me as pop-culture insider trivia now that I'm supposed to be toting around a couple of 10-year-olds. The 80's, because even though I lived it, I wouldn't mind rewinding it and watching it again with a few more notches of clarity. As I now command this wafer thin iPad pro (a device that could have run NASA in 83) to look up the latest fart video on KZbin, I have to pause and remind my Fred Savage watching 8-year-old self just how insane it's gotten. How I once thought a few CRTs and light up buttons in the dash of a shitty jet-black talking trans-am was high art. Now the Model X really will come get me if I need help while reading my emails back to me in Mandarin. I have the luxury of being now well into adulthood staring at a device that once represented the 24th century on Star Trek TNG. There are even some days I miss the old cigarette saturated late 70's GM interiors with Hall and Oats high-passing though the 6x9 center dash paper cone special. Because if the metal seatbelt buckle is too hot, you can always lay down in the notchback shelf.

it's worth pointing out that when these were built, luxury trim trucks did not exist from the factory. if you wanted a nice, comfortable truck, this was it. these days you can get a truck loaded out with so many gizmos and options you don't need these things anymore. a top trim F-350 or Silverado 3500 could do everything this does, and do it considerably better.

And this wasn’t from the factory, either. You certainly could buy an crew cab dually or a cutaway HD chassis and have it customized to be as luxurious as you wanted it to be. Truth is you didn’t need to, because rather than towing a 5th wheel-which back then weren’t exactly luxurious, either-you could just buy a motorhome. That’s what I have. ‘87 Triple-E 28’ on a Ford E-350 chassis. Super comfortable without the need to tow a fifth wheel. And for getting around when I’m there, that’s what a car dolly is for.

I think you all are forgetting who bought these things originally. The moneyed horse people. I'm talking about people who had horses worth more than your house type of people/$$$$ were the ones who drove these back in the 80's. Perfect for pulling your 5th wheel horse trailer, luxury trucks weren't really a thing in the 1980's. This was the F350 dually Platnium or King Ranch of 1986, it was kind of fuck you money to buy one of these when they were new.

Almost correct. Much like the F350 of today, this was actually usable day to day and was the, dare I say it, cheap way to go? Like today, one can have that F350 that costs a bunch, is used to haul horses and hay and that nice John Deere, if the need should arise, but could also take your family to the mall. Before these things were a thing, one would have to drop similar coin on a heavily used day cab to haul stuff around, and have money set aside for a kid hauler/grocery getter. Pickup van and F350 are what less affluent farmers and ranchers use!

Both of these vantrucks look like the polo shirts my uncle used to wear, off-white with blue or brown horizontal stripes of varying thickness, always unbuttoned, straining mightily to keep their elasticity against his keg-like frame. He smoked like an industrial capital of the rust belt before it became the rust belt. He did, actually, make carrying his belly around his post-retirement hobby. He unironically loved _Walker, Texas Ranger,_ and I felt kinda bad when he thought I liked it, when I was just being a sneering, sarcastic late-adolescent jerk. He died fifteen years ago, give or take, from his third heart attack. Give or take. He looked like Kenny Rogers, if Kenny Rogers did Just For Men commercials. I kinda want one of these. And I want Kenny Rogers’ scowling face airbrushed on it, somewhere. I’d keep the CB transmit button taped down, and just cackle madly, endlessly, barreling down the highway until I cough blood.

Centurion also built something that a family I knew had: the Classic. They would basically take an F-Series crew cab and attach the removable top from a Bronco, creating a sort of proto-Expedition. Ford didn't have a big four-door SUV yet (hell, they didn't even have a SMALL four-door SUV yet, the Explorer wasn't introduced until a full decade after the Centurion Classic), so this was really your only option if the Suburban, Wagoneer, and Land Cruiser didn't do it for you.

Yeah, you guys actually got a number of odd variations on our trucks that we didn't. The Ramcharger, for example, got a Latin America-exclusive third generation based on the second generation Ram. I think it's pretty damn cool, it looks like a second gen Durango on steroids. I won't be surprised if people start bringing them up here in a few years, when they're old enough for grey import. There was also Brazil's Chevrolet C-10 and Chevrolet Veraneio. For whatever reason, instead of simply selling the C/K and Suburban there, they built their own versions basically from scratch, utilizing only the drivetrain, chassis, and instrument clusters from the American trucks.
