lol, what William Adams?? The 302 maybe isn't the best truck motor, but there is nothing wrong with a 351 or 460 v8. The hype over the 300 is based on reliability alone, but the 351 and 460 will almost always last just as long as a 300, while providing more power and torque. The 300 has it's disadvantages in being a low power engine that is only useful when paired with low gearing, making for a truck that is useful off road and around the farm or work place, but not on the road at all. A 351 half ton or 460 3/4 or 1 ton will outclass a 300 truck any day of the week. People seem to forget that ford had other gas v8 options other than the 302 for the older trucks...

This engine came out for the 1984 model year, Dad bought one in 1983. We used it to pull a 350 bushel grain trailer, stone picking, going to our hockey games. Super Cab with full length box. 95 mph top speed at 2300 rpm. A Beast of a truck.

Proud owner of an 86 f250 with a 460. Shit gas mileage, but with a service body she carries everything I need, squirrelly on the freeway unloaded but with weight honestly not that bad plus it was my dad's work rig. Used to play in it as a kid. It was my dad who instilled what a man is supposed to be in me and I see the truck as an extension of him. Strange how a simple truck can have so much sentimental value. Same story bro, my grandad has a two tone dark blue and gray 1989 Ford F-150 XLT Lariat regular cab long bed. He bought it somewhere around 1998 and it's only needed a transmission in 2009, passenger tailgate cord in Summer 2017 or 2018, and a tailgate handle in 2011. It has dirty fuel injectors, so it runs terrible when you put ethanol gas in it. I'm going to be using for my scrap metal business in literally less than a week, and I would never sell it.

89 f350 cclb 4x4. Was a 460 getting 9 mpg at best. I swapped in an LS 6.0. Milage doubled and so did power lol. Love my truck; had it since I was a boy. Shes about 6 different colors; every time a panel rusts I swap it for a rust free one; color doesn't matter. 12k warn winch in a big steel bumper up front; custom steel flat deck on the back (I built years ago). We started having kids and the wife was pressuring me to buy something more fuel efficient. So I made mine more fuel efficient. Lol. They'll probably bury me in this thing

I have a ‘94 F250 with the turbocharged 7.3 IDI and 5 speed manual. Best truck I’ve ever owned. Gets good mileage, goes like hell, has no electronics, and fires right up in subzero temperatures. I will NEVER sell it. If the engine croaks, I’ll rebuild. If I can’t afford it, I’ll store it until I can.

Ford should've offered factory turbo in 89 instead of 94 and advertised legitimate power output. The 7.3psd is a legend and rightfully so...but the IDIT is even more so in my opinion.

The hitch has pulled travel trailers, car trailers, & produce stands. I've even yanked out fence posts with my truck. I LOVE having a truck...

1985 was the last year you could buy a Nissan 720 with the diesel four, in that case the SD25 2.5L, though neither that nor the SD22 2.2L that was available until the mid-year 1983 changeover from Datsun was cataloged for the four-wheel-drive models.

Speaking of small trucks...my 78 GMC K-35 is helping me do a "resto-mod" on a 94 Ranger that was bartered to me for some work I did on a friends truck while he was out of work and broke. The lil guy is getting a 302 and a BUNCH of body work. My dually has adopted him as her lil brother and is always happy to run to NAPA or even better Summit Racing to pick up parts.

rubber floors are the best in a truck. sure carpet is nice but it's a pain in the ass to clean esp if you spill stuff on it. where if you spill stuff on a rubber floor you just spray it with some water, wipe it down and youre good to go.

I am always so happy to get back in my ‘95 F150 without a TV on the dash. And yes, it has two USB ports (cigarette lighter adapter) and even up to date navigation (google maps on iPhone) when that is needed....Love my truck 😃

My 78 GMC K-35 watched this video with me in the shop. She wants to meet that Ford! They're kindred souls of a sort. They may not have the same parents but they're both working trucks with the battle scars to prove it! When my dually rolls through town (with her dual glassies rapping) on her way to the parts store or pulling "her" race car people do double takes and many times give us a wave or thumbs up. Kids always want pics taken with her and she always obliges. Even if they don't want to admit it people LOVE old trucks!

I ordered my '01 F350 Lariat from the factory in September, '00, still have it, and have zero intentions of ever selling it. No DEF or even a catalytic coverter to deal with. It has never let me down. The Tri-Power performance chip, along with 4" exhaust and Airraid intake really woke up the engine, giving it plenty of power for towing my boat and traval trailer, with up to 18 MPG on the road solo. The V10 gasser at the time got single digit MPG. At 150k miles, it runs smooth as silk. The only weak spot is the 4R100 auto tranny. I've talked to 6.0 Powerstroke owners who've kicked themselves for giving up their 7.3s with reliability down the tubes. I do my own maintenance: oil changes (full synthetic), fuel filter changes, coolant flush (ELC) and transmission flush (synthetic also). This truck will likely outlast me...lol.

I rather have that old "beater" Ford pickup over any of the new ones on the market, and that is saying a lot considering I am not a Ford guy. THIS is a truck, today's pickups are Cowboy Cadillacs, feel like I would break the damned things just looking at them funny. "But today's trucks are more comfortable and have more technology" you might say.... Technology and gadgets do not make a great truck, being easy to maintain and able to take abuse makes a great truck.

Carstuff111 amen, had an 06 f150 drove it for a few months, but a pothole and completely killed the radiator, then I had my tranny shift solenoid go, my master cylinder and then my power steering pump, went back to my 97, and I've just got a bad tranny, old trucks imo are better than getting anything new, spend a couple grand and a few weeks worth of work, and you'll have a truck to last a lifetime, go out and spend $40-$80k on a new one and you'll need a new one a few years later

It is pretty sad that my 1992 Honda Civic DX has 271,000 miles on it now, it had 236,000 miles on it when I bought it 3 years ago, the only things that were wrong with it? Needed a radiator and the AC didn't work. I replaced the radiator, brakes, did a tune up and oil change on it and it has served me well. Till recently, the head gasket let go (likely because someone had over heated it a bit when the radiator failed), I have the head pulled off right now, you look down the cylinder walls and you can still see the hone pattern! Pretty sad that an old Japanese car seems to have endured more abuse than most modern trucks can take. A good friend of mine worked for an AutoZone, he had a guy ask him if they sold rear ends for the then 2 year old Ford F-150 Raptor because he had destroyed his off-roading, and other guys asking for various parts for their Raptors because they had damaged things that were not covered under warranty and they were being too cheap to get their trucks fixed at Ford.

I had a '86 F250 Diesel, just like the one in the video, but brown and white. I once used it to pull a 57,000 lb crane out of a sand driveway on a construction site (thumps chest). But, I spent ALL my time working on it, glow plugs, tranny, clutch, glow-plugs again. It was loud, uncomfortable and it smelled awful in the cab, but it was a beast. In 2000, i traded it in for an F150 with 26,000 miles on it that I have NEVER had to work on since then. Not a single mechanical problem in 170,000 miles, just maintenance. I do miss the old brown beast though sometimes, but I don't miss the uncertainty. Keep your 2008, unless you're a competent hobby mechanic. .

My grandfather had a 1979 F-250 he bought new from Bondy's Ford in Dothan Alabama...almost the same truck... That old F-250 was a total WORK-HORSE!!! I watched my grandpa pull one of his John Deere 450 doziers stuck in a big spillway ditch when I was 14 yrs old...after he pulled that Dozier out he had a big smile on his face. Yeah, there was a period in the late 70s / early 80s where everyone believed diesel was the answer to our MPG problems. But then cheap gas and better fuel injection systems kinda killed that. Of course, diesel is still a favorite among big trucks, but that's more for power than economy. Thanks for watching!

GM tried to convert gas V-8's to diesel back then, but ended up with nothing but headaches for the try. Unlike today back then diesel was a lot cheaper then gas. For a real antique dog, look at a 50+ MPG slower then molasses in winter car - an 80's diesel VW (dasher or rabbit I think).

The infamous Olds 350 Diesel wasn't "converted from a gas engine," they shared the same CUI number with another Gas engine and people who didn't know the story thought "that makes sense" but it's not true. The real issues were they had no water separator (integral for Diesels,) they had weak head bolts and early engines had "green" engine blocks. Add in the stupidly low power for a Diesel engine and people who didn't know how to service them at dealerships and you had that mess. Some people who had the 5.7 cars stuck 6.2 Diesels in them which worked a lot better, I don't know why G.M. didn't just shelve the 5.7 altogether and put the 6.2 in its place.

I had one for a short time. They really were as horrible as people claim. Despite the advantages of small diesel engines in compacts, the Olds 350 turned Americans away from them for years. Eventually VW, and some others, convinced Yanks to try them again with the "clean diesel" concept. Unfortunately, history has shown them not to be so clean.

Got an 83 F250 6.9IDI. Same color scheme. Best truck ever! Not as powerful or as fancy as the new generations but it's reliable. Does exactly what I need it to do every-single-time without fail. Slow and steady. It's a grown folks truck.

That back seat in those was actually awesome in the down configuration. My dad had an 88 dually extended cab and we left that back seat folded down and put one of those thick cushions that was a chair but when folded out became a bed. It was about 4 inches thick and made an awesome bed back there. We took a huge trip in 91 all over the US and I slept for hrs and hrs back there.

Thanks for the review, I have the same truck. It made me a living and let me go back to college after a few years. They are amazingly simple, reliable and easy to maintain. I gradually modernized mine over the years with taller gears, overdrive transmission, and turbocharger. It still can't catch the new 400Hp diesels but I don't need it to. Low cost of ownership more than makes up for it. I never found the truck intimidating but it helps that I grew up driving old, long ford pickups for work. Even when I got a job after college and drove brand new fleet trucks, I never enjoyed them the way I do the old, reliable beast. Its undergoing a frame-off resto right now and I hope to be finished sometime next year. No plans to sell.

I dated a girl in the early 90's who's father had a '87 IDI F250 4wd (locking hubs) and a plow on the front. He had a snow clearing contract with Roosevelt Mall here in philly. I was more in love with her fathers toys than I was her. Lathes, English wheel, hydraulic presses, quads, dirt bikes etc etc. He was a man's man and I wanted all his toys! Sadly, we broke up and I'm still jealous of her fathers toys (35 years later).

I miss the utilitarian aspect of the pickup truck of this generation. They may look attractive, and they provide a few creature comforts, but to me, a pickup truck is a utility vehicle, first and foremost. If you have a lawn mowing business and you need a vehicle to haul a lawn mower to a job site, then that's what a truck is for. I've never understood how that kind of purpose got lost in today's world of the SUV and the crossover vehicle, where everything about the vehicle has to be car-like.

I would say 5% of drivers actually need a pickup. Most are just A-B vehicles. I laugh at people who can't afford to save money but drive full size pickups that get 18mpg and take 8 quarts of oil. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Oh, and a truck does not equal more manly. A little man in a lifted truck with nuts hanging off the back is still a little man..

Absolutely love this video so glad I found it again. This video was the deciding factor on me buying a 1985 F250 super cab 6.9 diesel. Essentially the same exact truck in this video but with a massive custom front bumper and custom beautiful flat bed. I absolutely love my truck. I love having a vehicle from an area where it was about work and getting things done and nothing else, no looking pretty or shiny just rough and tough. Truly an amazing vehicle.

Just got the temporary registration (still need to do the weight certificate to complete) on my my grandparents 1986 F250 6.9 diesel and after market turbo which hasn't been on the road in about a decade when i moved out from New Mexici and for 8 years before that. 1978garfield Exactly man. I have a 96 Ford F150 with 5.0L (302) Windsor V8 with 205,474 miles on it and it's still going strong. The only thing I replaced on my truck was the starter but other than that mostly was just simple maintenance and cleaned out the transmission fluid just to get rid of the shuttering it was making and it hasn't had a problem ever since. I hate touch screens as well.

My daily driver is a 01 E350 van with 400,000+ on the 5.4L. It has spit one spark plug but I got that fixed and it is hanging in there. I would like to meet the guy at Ford who decided to go with aluminum heads on the modular engines and punch him in the mouth. I can't type what I want to do to whoever killed the 300 straight 6.

I had an 08 f250. Bought it brand new. Used the piss out of it. Took good care of it too. Received 24000 for it on a trade in for my 2016 f350. Use this truck too. Pulling a trailer for more than half the mileage that gets put on. Modern trucks are designed to be comfortable like an everyday family vehicle. But tough enough for work.

Growing up, my family had a 1980 Olds 98 with a 5.7 diesel, two 1982 Suburbans with 6.2 diesels, a 1982 K5 Blazer with a 6.2 diesel, a 1986 K10 Suburban with a 6.2 diesel, and a 1991 K10 Suburban with a 6.2 diesel. Added all together, they produced 225 horsepower and ran 65% of the time... ;-)

I daily drove a 1975 F100 for a few years, sold it and bought a 1987 F250 6.9 4spd which is my current daily. All my trucks over the years have been in cow pastures, mud, towed campers, trailers, boats, tractors, race cars, used as moving vehicles, hauled dirt and rocks and thousands of pounds of firewood, toted plenty of dead deer, and just plain worked. I am a mechanic at a Ford dealership, truck specialist. It's amazing how fancy the new trucks are and how many of our customers buy a $75k powerstroke crew cab 4x4 to drive back and forth to work, never working the truck a day in its life. I love old trucks.

Way back when people bought pickups especially Ford pickups because they needed them for work now people buy pickups to look pretty in them and compliant about terrible mpg. Plus now they don't even have smoker windows to help get rid of the habit not a smoker but those windows actually gave a good amount of air in.

Except in 1986 every gas engine you could get in an F-250 had a carburetor, and none of them ever had TBI. The 300 got multiport EFI in 1987, the 351 and 460 in 1988.

Nicely done video. My daily driver is a 1986 Ford Ranger 2.3 Turbo Diesel(4D55) 5speed. No options(not even a radio) other than having A/C and a rear sliding window. 25mpg city and an angry 86 horsepower.

I bought a 1989 XLT F250 IDI diesel my senior year in high school. I agree with what you alluded to, regarding trucks today being luxury vehicles. Diesel pickup trucks today are a fad; I was driving diesel vehicles before it became the "popular" thing to do. Those old engines were ten times what they're building now. We have a 6.4 powerstroke in our F550 service truck, and the engine puked at about 65K miles. Had to replace the engine. The engine has been trouble from the day we bought it. Didn't have to worry about that with the old ones. Like I've always said, they don't build them like they used to. Love your videos. Thanks for making this one. I've got an old 67 F250 with no power steering, no power brakes, no a/c, with a 352 ( yes an old FE), 4 on the floor, and a 4.10 in the rear. I usually dont drove it faster than 55, but you dont need to, cause just cruising in it is a truly fulfilling experience that I enjoy. Plus working on it is very easy and cheap. Compared to todays trucks it is definitely modest.

Really wish they'd make classic styled modern trucks. I want the safety and comfort of a modern truck but with the simplicity of an old truck's interior. No power windows, no touchscreens, no electric seats, in fact, bring back the bench seats. All I want is button/knob climate control options and a radio.

you and me both. personally I love the idea of taking an early to late 90's model and giving it a 1.0EB and a t56. sure the engine is only pushing 125hp with the factory tune, but that's still more than 2.3 4 bangers that they came with and probably more efficient too.

I'm the proud owner of a 1985 f150 4x4. It has a 300 inline 6 with a T-170FT transmission 3.55 gears with 31" tires. The thing is a blast to drive and shifts good. And gas mileage isn't too bad with overdrive.

My daily driver is a 1984 F150, two tone blue like this truck but opposite paint scheme, 4x4, 4spd, single cab. I love it, most favorite personal vehicle I've ever had, and it is straight and clean, new tires, I get people commenting or waving in traffic at it. And with a 351, summit intake and carb, and new exhaust, it is a blast to drive. And this after 30 years of new trucks. And I've only got $4100 in it! lol!

I'm in love with that truck. Used to have a '90 F250 super cab 4x4 but the 460 was terrible on gas and I didn't need that much truck anymore so I sold it and bought a '93 Sonoma that has been a champ for almost 4 years now. I just did a 1,000 road trip last weekend in it.

Worked on these at a Ford dealer back in 1987. Many 6.9 never any problems the problem started with the 7.3. The same block but bored out. The lack of coolant system maintenance and ignorance would have your 7.3 with coolant in the oil many garages as while as we thought it was a oil cooler failure. We were all wrong it was cavitation of the cylinder walls causing pin holes to let coolant into the cylinders. The 6.9 with thicker cylinder wall thickness this problem was rare. The chemistry of coolant types and drain intervals have come a long way since the 80s. The modern Diesel engines we have today cavitation is a rarity the rattle associated with the diesel combustion cycle is gone. That rattle would cause the cylinder on the coolant side to expand and contract creating a void a small air bubble this would be like a miniature jack hammer removing a micro scopic piece of cast from the coolant side of the cylinder. Over many cycles this would bore a hole right through.The new engines with 10 times the injection pressures fuel management that 50 times faster than the early 2011 engines and pilot and post injection run as smooth as a gasoline engine.NOW the problem is the emissions. 98% of breakdowns are now emission related thank you California.

Now I will agree with the fact that trucks are a bit of a status symbol now, I've own three trucks in the 5 years I've been driving, and I haven't really needed a truck, but I do still work with them. I moved up from my old 1995 F-250 to a 2005 dodge cummins. It is a 4 door, mainly because I like big 4 door trucks. But it's still just a base model, crank windows, manual doors, and stick shift, because I don't need or want all that fancy stuff. I want a truck that will work day in and day out, and one I'm not afraid to get dirty when I do need to go work on the farm or out in the woods. But finding trucks like that, which are relatively new, is a harder and harder thing to accomplish nowadays.

I’ve been driving a 2012 F250 with a 6.7 Powerstroke in it for work. It is a fleet truck in every way. Rubber floors, vinyl seats, AM/FM radio. No cruise control, no power options of any kind. I absolutely love it. To me, it’s everything a work truck is supposed to be. I’m not afraid to bounce down a muddy road or get into and out of it with oily, dirty clothes. It’s just perfect and I wish it were mine.

i got a 1982 chevy c30 crew cab dually it originally came with the 6.2 Detroit diesel but got converted to a 454 and matched with a muncie 4speed, and i absolutely love it drive it almost everyday its one of my work trucks with the full ladder rack and inclosed box we built along with the tools it weighs 5tons but moves pretty freaking quick with the 454, i just love older vechicles much easier to work on then the new crap
