This takes me back to the 1980s with my grandmother’s washer and my aunt’s washer. My grandmother would use the Normal Cycle 14 minutes with Warm Wash/Cold Rinse with Hi Water Level and Oxydol with Bleach powder detergent and Downy April Fresh liquid softener. My aunt would use the Cotton Sturdy Cycle 14 minutes with Warm Wash/Cold Rinse with Extra High Water Level and Fuller Brush 86 powder detergent and Snuggle Cuddle Up Fresh liquid softener. My grandmother’s washer drained into a laundry tub and the floor drain would back up every time she did laundry.

I think with these machines the only thing that could take a 14 minute pounding would be sturdy fabric like denim that is quite filthy, otherwise a 10 or 8 minute wash would probably suffice for most any load. Truly the pinnacle of Whirlpool washer design.

Not sure if this has been addressed already, but my guess as to why this machine has the center timer control panel was that at the time, Whirlpool was clearing out its inventory of the center mount panels during the transition to making all their washers direct drives. It’s also unusual seeing the Kenmore name on a straight vane agitator, as that usually is only the case for the dual action models.
@lizboz
@lizboz 3 жыл бұрын
The console idea is plausible. As for the Kenmore logo, that was an early edition to the, well, what was new at the time, straight vane agitator design. If I remember correctly, they did a similar thing on the very BOL machines that were Sears branded; instead of the word "Kenmore" on the top cap, it was "Sears".

Amazing how the neutral drain system is still holding strong on a machine that old. I've noticed on all the direct drives the neutral drain systems tend to stop working eventually. Anyone know why that may be?

That’s such an early direct drive! It’s neat to see that control panel which I’d think would be for a belt drive but it’s a direct drive, how interesting

Just got my Estate Saturday and it's the same as this. I believe it corresponds to this model which would be a 60 or 60 series. Didn't realize the early 24" washers didn't have a spray rinse. The 27" washers that came out in 1986 I think did. I know mine from 1988 did but it was one spray rinse I believe. Would like to get a plain Dual action for it. One that doesn't sit high in the tub.

Nice! I'm taking a look at the videos of it now. Mine has only one spray rinse in the final spin, as far as I know. Some others were probably different in that regard. Cool deal.

That flex vane agitator is really the best I’ve seen in terms of a flex vane agitator it can handle many different load sizes very well!. Also would you be able to get a hold of a Frigidaire gallery series top load washer or a early 2000’s GE top load washer thanks:)

@@lizboz hahah right !, my grandmothers washer from years ago was a mid 90’s Sears Kenmore top load washer that had the same agitator, but it had only one dial and that was the main control dial, it only featured 3 wash cycles and the wash temps were built into them based on soil level and time, it didn’t even have a manual water level selector knob. Also thank you I’ll be looking out for any future videos of Frigidaire’s and GE’s

@@lizboz that’s right it was, and to be fair I find that even the base models are really just the sweet spot, I mean it’s definitely nice to have the additional features and knobs of middle and higher end models if they are used or needed but even a base model Kenmore, Whirlpool, Roper, GE etc. would work!. She doesn’t have it anymore but she has it for 15+ years and through that time it never once died on here. Around 2010 or so it was replaced with a Kenmore model that had a the dual action agitator (with fabric softener dispenser), white wash basket, variable water level knob (reset), two options one rinse and extra rinse *only for heavy duty cycle, four wash temps and cold rinses, and yeah you get the idea😄. This model has the lid safety switch built into the wash cabinet.

@lizboz 3 жыл бұрын
Wow, a washer that lasts more than 15 years??? Who would'a thunk it! The one she replaced it with sounds like one of the last direct drive machines made before they broke the mold with those cruddy new HE machines. I don't expect there should be any problems with it for a long time!

Believe it or not this has the same exact cycles as my Kenmore portable belt drive washer since it has the same 4 minute prewash along with the 14 minute wash, 8 minute delicate cycle, and a 10 minute permanent press cycle as well.
@lizboz
@lizboz 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, besides no warm rinse, infinite WL or extra low speed, this was a pretty TOL model for what it was.
@seana806
@seana806 3 жыл бұрын
@@lizboz no extra low speed but still works fine on the low or normal speed and you can even use the delicate cycle for lightly soiled clothes and it will still do a good job nonetheless. It will spin on a slower spin speed but if it were paired up with a 29” dryer it would be fairly quick since those 29” dryers were designed for the slower spinning belt drive washers of the era.

@toddy6681

So was this first year of Whirlpool direct drive washer machine?
@lizboz
@lizboz 3 жыл бұрын
No, the first year ever in which an actual prototype direct drive model was built was 1980. A Kenmore 60 series 24" machine, which had an odd gold agitator with a manual clean lint filter. A few other variants of that model were made later in 1981 and possibly 82. Meanwhile, the first Whirlpool direct drive was built in 1981 and marketed in 1982 as the "all new Whirlpool DESIGN 2000" washer. When these first came out, they didn't have neutral drain transmissions, so the moment the machine went from agitate to go to drain the water, it would immediately start spinning. Neutral drain wasn't until about 1984-85 when people were complaining of the alleged premature wear on the coupler, trans, clutch and suspension caused by the premature spinning full tub of water and clothes. So that was corrected, and mine was made about a year after that, so even though it's a 1983 model year, mine's been "retrofitted" with an updated trans and timer.
