In this series, I'm servicing my 1986 Kenmore 60 series by first of all making sure it still runs from having sat and neglected for a while. Then removal of the cabinet, inspecting all the habitation inside and assessing what needs done from there.
This part shows some of the preliminary problems that likely you, like myself, will run into in servicing a machine this old. First of all, upon removing the motor & transmission, the pump ended up being so rusted onto the motor shaft and would not come off the motor with any ease at all. Unfortunately, that turned out to be a disaster. I had to cut the pump off with a cutoff wheel tool to finally get it off which meant I'd now be needing a new pump.
Then, upon further investigation, the motor coupler was determined to be shot, and it's amazing that it even still ran up to this point. That will need replaced as well.
Next is the transmission. Needs a new clutch gear oil seal. No big deal, that's not much $ at all. But I've got to pull all that out so that all the oil slung can be cleaned off of that. And then put new oil in it for the sake of it.
Stay tubed for Part Two of this series!
