After using the fabric softener dispenser for years now, I think I'm going to finally ditch it because of this noise. Also think the DAA looks better without it.
@lizboz8 күн бұрын
I've sort of come up with a "trick" to circumvent that issue for the time being. Just take a rubber band that will fit comfortably around the top rim of the auger. Where the dispenser slips over that, it will put pressure on the four tabs of the dispenser and push it "out" so as to buffer the noise. Ultimately it's up to you.

Also how does the top part of the agitator look like it’s just spinning?
@lizboz22 күн бұрын
The agitator in this machine is two-piece. The bottom piece is of course what moves back and forth while the top spins forward by a ratcheting mechanism inside of there. Four little agitator dogs ride and clutch into a wall of teeth in the top part of the agitator and cause it to only move one way, sort of like a corkscrew. The spirals on the top part work to "corkscrew" the clothes down to the bottom where they get agitated by the bottom.
@StuffStudier22 күн бұрын
@@lizboz Yeah I know that, but it usually stops then moves again when the bottom piece is moving counter clockwise, bow come in this video the top is just spinning without stopping lkke that?
@lizboz22 күн бұрын
@StuffStudier Some did that, some didn't. According to KZbinr Sharkie626, the Whirlpools did it more often than the Kenmore ones. I think it has to do with the condition of the thrust washer that sits in between the top and bottom sections, as well as how clean the thing is through all the crevices. But also, this video, I just had it running with water. If there were clothes in there, it would have had more resistance on it to stop it between each index.
@StuffStudier22 күн бұрын
How does the agitator move back and forth? Does the motor reverse which way it turns really fast or does the transmission do something that makes it move clockwise then counter clockwise?
@lizboz22 күн бұрын
The motor runs in one direction for agitation and then the other direction for spin. During agitation, the transmission is what does the oscillating for the agitator by the use of a connecting rack gear which rotates in an eccentric motion to drive the gear currently attached to the agitator shaft. When neutral drain arrives, a cam follower/actuator shifts the gear on the agitator shaft to disengage the agitator, so that the agitator will not turn during neutral drain or spin.

How much was the fix, and how much did you get out of selling it?
@lizbozАй бұрын
Motor couplers were about $14 for a five pack of them, drain pump about $10 IIRC, transmission seal was $10, lid switch was $20-something, I bought it 7 years ago for my 92 Kenmore, but ended up using it here. Then the tub seals I had to replace later were about $80 altogether because the shaft seals came only as a kit with new bearings. So altogether, about $130-something. I think I then sold it for $100. Not a great profit that one, but needed to sell in any case to make room for other machines that will come and go.

The only conclusion I’ve made about why the older direct drive transmissions not slipping into spin was they probably were built with better tolerances. The later direct drives were noisy and were prone to certain issues from the worn out tooling in Whirlpool’s factory, someone on AW mentioned that’s probably why they ended up switching to the VMW design which frankly isn’t all that good. Many of the drive trains and mechanisms they are putting into HE machines really was only meant for portable and compact machines, not full size machines. May explain why HE machines don’t last. Btw, I want to apologize for any negative comments about the direct drives I’ve made in various groups and forums. Just wish they did multiple spray rinses on the first spin to help with rinsing. Maybe it’s to do with I have more experience with the belt drives despite being in the same age demographic along with working on them, crazy as this sounds I don’t have any experience with the direct drives, though I’ve seen lots and lots of videos of them in operation here on KZbin. Good news is I *might* be able to successfully repair the timer on my Whirlpool and hopefully put it back into service sometime this summer. It’s going to be a tedious process, but I’ve figured out a way to repair the cam assembly.
@MakesdonsdonsoneyАй бұрын
The ones from 81 to 83 does spin drain they were in competition with Maytag
@lizbozАй бұрын
Could be. The machinery used to build that stuff was still new back then. They switched designs because of greed/money, and the EPA, primarily. That may have been part and parcel to why they did it, but otherwise they did it because the government told. them to do it. The thing with the spray rinses is something I can agree with you on, I wish they would have made them all have spray rinses in both spins--no reason to not. But in any case, that can be easily done by modifying the cam in the timer responsible for said function. My 92 Kenmore has notches for that in a certain cam, and I know that because I've taken it apart and looked into it. Would just need to cut out another notch in that cam for when it goes into the first spin, and there's your spray rinse on both spins. What exactly is the problem with the timer on your Whirlpool? In any case, hope you have good luck fixing it!

@@lizboz basically the cam assembly separated in half, tried putting it back together but wasn’t working on the gentle or wash n wear cycle. Basically had to gently hacksaw in the area it broke, now I am going to gently sand the areas down so there’s a flat surface. Going to use some old flat Lego pieces I found in a junk drawer since they are the same width and slid in between the good cams on the assembly. Going to JB-Weld the Lego pieces on the area that’s been sanded down, then JB-Weld the other part of the cam assembly back on. Also used some whiteout for reference points. May sound like a hack job repair, but will make sense when I post about it on AW sometime this summer or make a video of the repair process (more than likely will just be a post on AW).

Hello! Very good video, I've got the same machine. Just today it died on me. It will no longer spin and drain. Any help would be appreciated, I hate to get rid of it.

If there's no coupler, you have a belt drive machine. They were both commonly made with the same consoles around this time before they discontinued them after 1986 and switched over completely to direct drives. I sold this machine a month ago and subsequently bought a belt drive just like it. Could be a number of things wrong with it. Does the motor still run but it just won't function properly? Nice repair. Did you clean up the center tube that the wash basket was stuck to before you put it back together? I've only ever made one repair to a direct drive washer. My aunts Kenmore took a dump and my cousin and I took it apart and found a broken motor coupler. I think it took us less than an hour total to fix that machine including the trip to a Sears Service Center to get the new coupler. Other than that I've never had to take one apart but I only have access to one at our summer home and that just works and hasn't needed any repair as of yet.
@MatthewJames-st5wv3 ай бұрын
I replaced that entirely. It's called tub support.
@lizboz3 ай бұрын
I believe I would have cleaned it, yes. These things can seem a little daunting to take apart, but once you do one, the next one just gets easier because you learned on the first one what's all involved in normal circumstances (sometimes). Then, maybe 3, 4 more down the road, it only gets easier. Of course you might get one that's lived in somebody's waterlogged basement for 10+ years and it still runs, but it's hanging on by a thread. Then when you go to take it completely apart, you find that just about everything underneath is completely rusted or "olded" to itself. Then it gets fun. Luckily we haven't had to get one that crazy yet!
