We begin refurbishing parts to go back on our Range Rover chassis once it's ready. Having stripped the Rot-Rover bare, the exciting part of the process is about to begin. The first job is to strip down and examine the axles and differentials for excess wear and tear. Will there be anything worth salvaging?

10:13 Quote verbatim "Shims! Come on Edd, you can't just assume everyone knows what a shim is. Apart from being a lovely, pert sounding word; shims are actually very useful things - essentially super thin metal washers in a range of precise thickness so they can be stacked together to take up a exact amount of slack. The can be a lot of pfaff though as fitting & checking the preload involves a lot of taking apart and reassembly without seals and things before finally reassembling with everything in place once you are sure you have the correct overall thickness of shims in place. Shim, what a lovely sounding, useful, pfaffy thing!"

Top tip: whenever draining any oil, take out the fill plug/remove the fill cap first. This way you a- know you can refill it and b- stops the oil ‘glugging’ as it’s draining, giving a smooth stream which is easier to inspect for debris, and a lot less likely to cause a mess

best way to fill a rover diff if you dont have a long neck on the oil or a pump. just take the halfshaft out and pour the oil in that way, had to do it a few times. with steel rims you dont have to remove the tire even. front is abit harder, but if you are changing cvs its a great way of doing it since you are already in there

This series has inspired me to finally start work again on my oldest project car a 1999 Corsa sport that hasn't moved in over 5 years. It's sat like that for a number of reasons, one of which was assuming it was beyond me and to get it going again would mean spending endless amounts of cash at a garage. Seeing how you worked on this range rover and that it's not actually that hard if you just take your time about it I'm much more confident going back into this project. Now I just need to learn to weld, preferably without burning the car, the house and myself to the ground! Great to see the range rover making some progress too.

Yay! More mechanical fiddling! The construction of those Range Rovers impress me, now I see why John couldn't actually kill it off even if he wanted to. Rear axle might "just" be a live axle (solid from one side to the other), but that's a full float axle which means hub and halfshaft ride on their own separate bearings, which is allegedly the stuff of legends when it goes for offroading, and very highly sought after in motorsport as well (Escort MK1/2's such as Mckinley's & Frank Kelly's all use full float Atlas axles).
@billbeyer657
@billbeyer657 2 жыл бұрын
The reason full floaters are desirable is because the only load on the axle is rotational. All of the weight bearing is done by the stub axle. But even if you get a little throttle happy and break an axle the vehicle will still roll and all you lose is drive to that wheel instead of the wheel falling off and disabling the vehicle.
@ToreDL87
@ToreDL87 2 жыл бұрын

Love the Workshop most when it focuses on nuts and bolts (however rusty) and not chit-chat. But what about a rough idea of what that axle rebuild is going to cost with new or used parts. I agree and disagree in equal measures. Don't spend $40k rebuilding a $30k vehicle. It is relative though. An old Torana here in Aus will sell for significantly more than the investment. Now I'm beginning to see serious stuff here with proper handling, new parts and so on. Really looking forward to see the next following video on those axles! Good job as always!👍👍👍

All those parts look so solid and meaty, totally OTT for the school run, which is what a lot of Range Rovers get used for!

If you do much more than the school run those solid and meaty parts break!! The axles are the weak link on these old land rover’s

@@GasketGaz axles are semi good. stock halfsahfts are cheese. broken some out my driveway. 7 of them in a few months, ashcroft heavyduty and ive done a wheelie, drifted it in rwd. 4th gear burnouts. blown trnansmissions, tboxes and a diff center. 10 times less wear than those 10 spline shafts in the rear of this rover axle. hahaha

My top tip with stubborn drain or fill plugs is to threaten them with dire consequences if they don't come out quietly. Some detailed cursing too I find surprisingly effective at softening them up, just in case they do put up a fight. I learnt this from my Dad, who had been a WWII REME mechanic. I also learnt to take out whichever plug you fancied first, because the others were going to have to come out one way or another. You can't just give up and be beaten by a simple drain or fill plug. Not if you are a real mechanic.

My question is for Britpart. Did Edd clean up after himself after leaving so much rust on your floor. 🙂

I would shim up the pinion bearing then fit wheels and spin up and listen to the sound under load then on wheel overrun without adding oil... Then decide what to do... Also remember original bearings even worn have a much deeper hard surface than Chinese replacements...

Glad to see you are using Timken bearings rather than the britpart special chinesium ones that are guaranteed to fail within 100 miles.

Rule No.1 of landrover work. never use Britpart, unless its the only option or you know its a good part. they sometimes have stuff that dont fall apart instantly. bearings is big nono to go britpart. timken or dont change them, same for seals. corteco or genuine landrover branded. nothing else imo. would also change them splined conections out. going to be loads of clunking every time you let off the gas or set off after reversing or opposite, from experience. have changed the entire drive line of my d1 to get the slop out, i let of agressivly the car engine brakes and thats it, no clunk no nothing. even had to change the clutch to get that bit of slop in the splines of the friction plate out :P

Oh, that doesn't sound too encouraging. I thought they offered quality parts for Land Rovers. Looks like they're choosing shit suppliers for some of the parts just to keep the prices low. Bad!

@@norbiesison9257 they use the cheapest metals. lowest grade plastic/rubber for seals. only thing i have found to work well was their clutch. handled hard abuse with a 200tdi running 35psi of boost, burnouts in 3rd gear, fourth it finally spun the last life of the clutch out. was a stock clutch aswell. 2 years of offroad and on road abuse. proud of that little fellar

I can’t believe how many people have had to jump in with the “undo filler plug first comment”. It is completely valid when doing a service- you don’t want to risk gettng stuck with no way to fill oil. But here, not really, it has to come out one way or another, you can’t say “oh I won’t rebuild the axle then as I can’t undo the filler plug” can you?
