My grandpa's car was a JDM 86 GT with a 4AGE engine. I inherited it and it's such and odd experience to me. I just remember all the memories i had and i can't help to cry and feel so much joy by being behind the wheel of it. Every time i see one that it's not mine just brings me a smile on my face. I have an st165 and an st162 used by toyota to showcase the car in fairs. This is one of my favourite toyotas (and cars) ever. Curiously enough, the thing I like the least are the pop-ups; the car looks absolutely sleek and stunning with them down, ugly and wonky with them up. Everybody is always "omg the pop-ups are so cool, you must love them" and I'm "actually, I kind of dislike them" A question of opinion I guess.

Oh yeah, I grow to like this car more and more. I actually just bought an MR2 the other day (it’s been all over my Instagram, KZbin vid coming soon lol) and I have to admit it felt weird it wasn’t the Celica. I only got to drive it for 2 hours on the way home before tearing the thing apart though haha. It’s in ok shape but needs some cleaning up and tuning. As I work on it, it feels more and more mine at though. Anyways the Celica is still a favorite and my way more practical daily.

I've had one of these before, I sold it and I missed it so much I've bought another one and I'm restoring it right now. To fix the issue with the passenger door, remove the inner door panel and check if the window touches these metal wires that operate the handle from the outside. It's a pretty common issue with these and it takes only about half an hour to fix.

I’m also an owner of an 86 Celica, but I have the gts. It is an amazing car to drive, and I get a lot of looks from younger and older guys, and I don’t blame them. I love how my car looks, and how quick it is while being so reliable makes me happy with my purchase. The back roads is what the car is destined to live in, and it surprises me how much speed I can carry in a corner, even when it feels like it’s slipping, it still gives me confidence since I can feel when I’m at my limits. But in conclusion. The 86 Celica is the perfect runabout car with a lot of practicality, while being a peppy car. And i give Toyota respect for being such an amazing company at that time.

Saw your MR2 project in a search, but I absolutely had to start here! My first car was an '86 Celica GT-S. Similar, but with a more powerful twin-cam 3S-GE engine that packed 135HP in US trim and in the coupe body style versus liftback. Loved that thing. The 4th-gen Celica was well-reviewed for its handling, considered to be one of the best-handling FWD platforms of its era. It also has a significant motorsports history due to the ST165(called the Alltrac here and the GT-Four overseas); the first Japanese turbo AWD car to enter WRC and the car that dethroned Lancia's winning streak in 1990 at the hands of Carlos Sainz. I'm on my third 4th-gen Celica, an ST165 that I've owned for the past five years. She's been used as a daily at several points and despite some knocks has never let me down. Parts are incredibly difficult to find due to rarity(only 10K ST165s were made and most stayed in Japan) but to me it's worth it. Best of luck with your projects! I'm looking forward to more progress on your AW11.

Obviously I need more funds for something on that level though, so it'll be a while. I wanna do a modern day initial d inspired series someday. It’d be about fixing up an old beater and tuning it to compete with more powerful stuff and newer cars. Thinking I’d focus it on a first gen MR2 cuz they’re cool but also snap oversteer could be an interesting threat to work with. I’d try to include plenty of car culture of today like car meets, repair shops, mods, and stuff. And of course there’d be plenty of racing. Anyways, big project but someday when I have the funds I want to do it. I’d have to include way more people for it but I know I could do it. Literally shot this with minimal planning and in a few nights as a test video to experiment with some techniques.

Love your video style & aesthetic :) Also nice to see the Celica get some love in such a nicely produced video, I agree that if it had been RWD it'd have been way more popular. Probably as popular as the AE86 (same engines, after all. It came with a 4A, 4A-GE or 3S-GE). But the Celica, even if it's FWD, is still a very fun car to drive indeed :) Seeing some of the hacky solutions & faded paint makes me want to come over and fix up your Celica though :P If you want to make the paint look 10x better, just polish it up! It's single-stage paint, so it doesn't take much to make it look nice again. Power steering having an oil leak is common damage to be truthful. (Most of the time it's the reservior) Can't wait to see what other car videos you have planned, and I hope you get to enjoy your Celica for much more to come.

My 2018 Escape is better in almost every way than my 94 Explorer. The only thing the Explorer has on the Escape is it’s off road capabilities. I have to admit though, the Explorer still has this charm to it that is very unique to it. The Escape does too, but I haven’t had it long enough for it to be as nostalgic.

It rapidly became my favorite car, because of how fun it is to drive. A year ago I sanded away and resprayed the paint with the stock red color and added a red pearl effect coat and gave it a gnarly shine. Fixed most of its issues over time until the bearings blew. You aren't too far from me. I'm in Tacoma area. I am a huge Celica enthusiast. I can fix your door, I know exactly what is wrong with it. A little yellow L shaped clip that holds the outside door handle to the rod. Somewhat common to break and thankfully easy to fix. It would also fix your window issue. I'd also be able to take a look at why your AC isn't working but no promises on a fix. If it's electronic, I should be able to fix it. There is probably other things I can fix as well. I think I have some of the clips on hand but I'll have to check to make sure I have the correct side since they are Left or Right. Nice, I hope you enjoy it! They’re fun cars and good looking if in better shape than mine haha. As for the swap though, a manual swap is a big undertaking from my understanding. You’ll pretty much need a whole 2nd manual parts car to do it since you need a new ECU, interior trim, new pedals, installing a clutch fluid line, some other random small parts, and the transmission itself. The parts alone will probably cost more to do than the car itself. Not trying to discourage you, but I’d really look into it before you do anything.

I just grabbed up my proper first long term car which is a '85 MR2 which I plan to maintain and keep in great condition while maybe doing some AutoX later down the line after I get the car 100%. I ran upon this video from your AW11 series and it's a trip because before I bought my MR2, I was heavily considering an '86 Celica GTS which was in great shape, before realizing I've always loved the AW11 and should just pony up the extra cash to grab one. I spent almost twice as much buying the AW11 then what the GTS was listed for but I can't say I regret it, I do wish I had some funds to perhaps snag the GTS as a daily driver!

Nice! Yeah the MR2 is def a much cooler and more fun car but the Celica is just simply a better daily driver. And way more reliable for the cost hahaha. I don’t regret getting the Celica at all and it’s done more for me than the MR2, but the MR2 will be the one I always prefer

@@RetraCast Absolutely, the Celica has grown on me a lot over the past few months, but the AW11 will always be top dog for me! Please keep up the great content, I'll be watching your videos! (If you start working full time, post some quick and easy dash cam curvy road bits!)

A tip for you is that you could make someone hold the camera on shots from another car, that removes the shakyness and could make the camera follow the car better

Totally agree. I actually even have a gimbal for it but this vid was started as honestly more an experiment to test the new gear and a bunch of techniques for future car videos coming. That’s also kinda why the lighting honestly varies a lot in different shots in the intro. Anyways, yeah a third person to shoot is def ideal but for this I simply just didn’t have anyone I wanted to call on yet haha. I will for the next few projects though. Anyways thanks for watching and stay tuned for those coming.

For some reason, I wish some of it was in 5:4 format ... 😲

I considered making the intro in 4:3 and also maybe doing some more VHS grain hahaha. Decided against it for this one though but I wanna do more stylized cinematic stuff like that in the future

I Have a Jeep TJ and a Subi Legacy Wagon And been trying to add a Celica to finish my collection for now. Debating on the 84-85 liftback. Or one of these models. Flippys for sure. Alltrac would be nice. But man is it hard to find non convertible, manual in my area in good condition.

FWD is not as bad as “car guys” make it out to be. It has some genuine advantages. I would argue that if your priorities aren’t drifting and pure acceleration, then FWD is actually better for you. If you want to do a few more.. trucks, the RWD is the way to go.

This made me fully commit, currently looking for an 85 gts lift back! Live the video

@@RetraCast I know, the 85 is the last RWD platform on a celica that’s why I want that year but by fully commit I mean on getting a celica from the 80s, it will be a first for me!

Nice car! I own a ‘87 Celica facelift with a 4a-ge engine. The red paint is fu... as yours, but I love to drive it. For more Initial D experience, I bought an original ae86 chime and install it to hear it when you get overspeed (100km/h like Takumi’s 86). Is a pain in the ass when you are at highway but you can always put eurobeat 🤣 In my city everyone knows the famous “Tofu Celica”. I have to admit that I need to fix it properly (previous owner didn’t look after it properly) but I just love how engine sounds while “touging” and its 80’s shape😍

They are great cars. I didn’t know you could install the chime lol. Good luck on yours, hope it gets the work it deserves someday

the 1986 GT has the 4A-GE so it's easily the best car in the world right behind the 86 :)

I was re-watching your previous Celica video just today, looking for inspiration on how to capture my Celica 5, just to be surprised to see a new one is up. Perfect timing :) Also If you could share it: What's your camera/lens setup?
@RetraCast4 жыл бұрын
Hey, yeah I’m actually gonna be doing a behind the scenes where I walkthrough how the whole video was shot. It’ll be on my second channel (link in description). I plan on getting it up next week if I’m not busy with my next main vid. Anyways, it’s a fujifilm x-t4 with a 12mm f2, 35mm f1.4, and a 56mm f1.2. But the camera stuff is really only a fraction of what went into the vid and arguably not the most important. There’s also suction car mounts, an led light panel, an rgb led light panel, a gimbal, and lots of techniques and tricks in setting up each shot and editing them.

I recently got a toyota celica for my 16th birthday but its a st185 (STX) front wheel drive automatic coupe needs some work but luckly it has no rust or anything and came with some nice mods! from what i know i need to replace the fuel pump and it should start still debating if i should make videos on it and post it

Honestly if you have the time and gear for it, might as well film the work and see where it goes. Worst case you can just stop later but you can’t reshoot what already happened haha

@@RetraCast After all this time It's been sent to the best mechanic in the area last Friday so now I'm waiting for it's wonderful return to see it finally run lol, When I commented I didn't know as much about it as I do today.
