Keep in mind how long he had to wait for that. He was on some very bad Met teams. He was on the Mets when they were a joke of a dead horse. He was on the team when they were champs. How that team only won one world series is beyond me. Imagine if they had the wild card then. The Mets be would have been in the playoffs every year up to 92.

Never fails to bring tears to my eyes. Long before my time, but my family has always supported the Mets to some extent (my late aunt Tracy loved them, and Gary Carter was her hero [met him many times during his stint in the “Big Apple”]). My mother told me after they won it all, my late grandfather “bench-pressed her in celebration on the front porch”, and that is a beautiful mental image to have of how they enjoyed the sport. May all three individuals listed here rest easy; they have certainly earned their eternal rest!

I'm a Red Sox fan who was born during the second inning of Game 1. So I was immediately anointed a Sox fan after entering the world on the night of 10/18/86. But that being said, I must say this: After watching the WHOLE series, not just Games 6 and 7, the Mets were definitely the better team and better managed. The Sox were a good team but very poorly managed. I was brainwashed by my family into thinking Buckner was solely to blame for the loss. With age comes wisdom.

You're absolutely right, a lot of things went terribly wrong for the Red Sox in the bottom of the 10th inning, 1: Two outs and no one on base, and Schiraldi couldn't close it out. 2: Bob Stanley made two HUGE mistakes. First one the wild pitch, (he later blamed Rich Gedman saying that it should have been a passed ball) second one they had Ray Knight easily picked off at 2nd base. Stanley never looked at Marty Barrett. Even if Buckner fields that grounder Wilson would have beat both Buckner or Stanley to 1st.

Thanks for the intelligent comment. In game 6 Clemens was pitching great. McNamara pulled him for Shiraldi, and then Stanley, both were a joke. And who threw the wild pitch to tie the game? Stanley. And the reality is that even if Buckner catches the grounder, Wilson beats both the throw and Stanley to the bag. Buckner got a bad rap for sure.

The Kid is first to get to the mound and he is immediately train wrecked to the ground. Also, note the final hug we see here is a very emotional Dykstra finding Gary and giving him a huge hug. Now that’s true brotherhood right there. Love this team. I wish so hard for the Mets to do it again some time soon. For the fans, for the franchise, but most importantly for my Father. I was not born yet in ‘86 so I want to be there to celebrate with him for the next one.

The 1986 playoffs and then the World Series was the most entertaining and dramatic baseball I have ever seen it also helps that the Mets were my favorite team at the time and the Redsox were my favorite AL team as happy as I was for the Mets I really felt bad for the Red Sox and when it was over it was kind of bittersweet but man talk about drama! So glad the Sox pulled it off in 04 and they are my #1 team today. Those 86 Mets were as colourful as any team I've ever followed. Currently reading Lenny Dykstra's book it's bring back a lot of memories from that era...I don't care what anyone says baseball is the greatest game on earth!

Why did the groundscrew cover the pitcher's mound so quickly? It was last game of the season.

Too bad Marty Barrett had to make the last out. He was a phenomenal, reliable hitter and great all-around guy! I arranged for him to sign autographs at openings of stores in the Boston area with a national retail chain, and he handled the huge crowds and individuals with amazing patience and friendliness. In 1987, my wife--an avid Mets fan--had the opportunity to sit across from him at a lunch we shared and say, "Every time you got up, I used to curse the TV because you always got a hit!" He said he grew up practicing by hitting bottle caps with a broom stick.

It doesn't matter what those numbers mean. I enjoyed your comment just as much as I enjoyed the Mets beating the Red Sox.

Irony is Red Sox Wade Boggs 10 Years Later would be Celebrating his World Series Ring riding a Horse at Yankee Stadium across the River from here in this Ballpark. Don't you just love MLB.
