I bought a used steering column w/o keys. I purchased a $15 lock pick from China. It worked great. I just waited 2.5 weeks. The only advice i will give is if you do not have the OEM lock cylinder, order an OEM or get one from the junkyard with keys. I purchased one from RockAuto, a standard motor products, and another from Autozone, a smartlock they just did not fit right. I broke one and got so frustrated with the other one that they both went into the trash. I found an OEM one from eBay Ford-Strattec that worked perfectly. I'm ready to install it. Thanks for the advice on the bushing. I just ordered it. Great video.

I have a Ford 1991 350 E Jamboree that my son’s friends drilled out the ignition. I spent three hours at the pick apart in my hometown of Bakersfield and found a steering column removed it and brought it home to change it out. One thing to take it out of a junked picked apart vehicle than to replace inside this very crowded ford jamboree . Especially if the only experience I have is watching you tube on how to do it. My question is , I dont know what I have to disconnect fluid wise before I take off the steering column.
@BradleysGarage5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comments Cathy, you will not need to remove anything related to fluid for the steering column. All of the power steering lines are connected directly to the rack so you won't be messing with that. The biggest challenge will be the dash trim parts and other plastic bits as they are now brittle and 30+ years old. Please feel free to reach out if you run into any trouble. Cheers!

DID YOU EVER GO BACK AND FINISH TIGHTENING THE TWO BOLTS THAT HOLD THE IGNITION SWITCH TO THE COLUMN?
@BradleysGarage Жыл бұрын
Sorry Bob, we forgot to film that part but yes we tightened them up after confirming the truck started properly. Just a little more standing on your head to cinch those down but not too bad. Thanks for hanging out, Cheers!

Thank you bro my only problem now is finding a new steering column
@BradleysGarage5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comments Alex, sorry to hear you are having trouble finding a good used steering column. Broncos are a little tougher to locate these days but the F150's seem to pop up quite frequently. Also remember that F250 & F350 use the same column as well. Just keep checking your local wrecking yards for inventory and we are sure one will show up. Good luck on your project, Cheers!

My buddy and I also want to change the steering gear next month, on my 1983 F150 if it works that way I'm very satisfied. Top video, very well explained and filmed. Is there anything to consider with my 83' or does it work the same way? Best regards from Germany
@BradleysGarage9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comments, appreciate the feedback. The 1983 uses the same basic steering column. They were all pretty much the same from 1980-1991, with differences being the tilt function. Thanks again for hanging out, glad you enjoyed the video. Let us know how your swap goes. Cheers!

I put an 86 in an 88. It worked but the steering wheel was upside down, then when I replace the steering gear box, I flipped the steering will over then hooked up the gear box.

Well, I am pretty sure, having Mark V, 1979, had a same problem, but....I think nothing was broken, the rod was just off, loosen from under the steering wheel, it was just off the "eye", typical Ford/ Lincoln problem, I really think, you could Fix this, without replacing the whole column!! Other than that, good video !=)
@BradleysGarage3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comments, you may be right about fixing the old broken one. It was easy enough for us to grab the junkyard item so we went that route. Appreciate the feedback though, thanks for taking the time. Cheers!

How do you lign the two gears up in the column for the key cylinder and lock pin gear
@BradleysGarage13 күн бұрын
Thanks for the question Paul, apologies we didn't show down the key cylinder hole before inserting the key assembly. You will just need to line up the grooves in the column before attempting to slide it in. Be sure the small detent pin is facing towards the hazard switch and it should slide right in. Feel free to shoot us over some pictures over on our Instagram page if you are still having issues. Good luck on your Ford project, Cheers!

Hey, I am going to the junkyard to pull out a steering column, but I do not have a steering wheel puller or keys for either column, will I need to pull he steering wheel or can I leave it on?
@BradleysGarage6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question Aden. You don't need to have a steering wheel puller with you to remove the column. Just keep in mind they will probably charge you for it if you can't get it off. In regards to the key, you will have to drill out the tumbler in order to remove it if you don't have the key. Good luck on your Ford project, Cheers!

Was the Engine not staying started after turning engine over? That is the problem I am having on my 89 Bronco, so looking for my fix.
@BradleysGarage Жыл бұрын
Hey Dennis, thanks for the question. When the ignition rod becomes out of position, either by being worn out or just broken, it will no longer make contact with the switch in the middle of the column. When you turn the key, nothing will happen, it will not crank since the contract is not being made. The temp method is to turn on the key so the ignition electronics are on and then use a L shaped tool to apply pressure to where that rod makes contact with the electric switch. Instead of trying to repair the rod assembly, we chose to swap out the entire column with a good used one. Hope this helps answer your question, let us know how your repair goes. Cheers!

I repaired the rod assembly on my 88 F150..it wasn’t hard to do at all.
@BradleysGarage10 ай бұрын
@@ronaldnorris2179 Thanks for the comments Ronald. We just figured since you have to remove the steering column anyways to repair the rod assembly, we would just swap it out and then take the time to completely restore the original column. $50 was money well spent to get the Bronco back on the road with very little downtime. Thanks again for hanging out, Cheers!

Where can I buy a column for 50 bucks for 1989 bronco..??
@BradleysGarage15 күн бұрын
Thanks for the question Paul, we picked it up from LKQ. It looks like the price went up a little bit since the video, now it's $56.99. www.lkqpickyourpart.com/prices/anaheim-1265/ Happy hunting, Cheers!

As far as removing the steering wheel, just crank her all the way to the left and mark it at the wheel location! No help needed (for those of us who rarely have helpers,).

Changing the steering column is one of the easiest jobs to do. Mind you I have been fixing my own vehicles for the last 40 years. As a Mechanic you should know to stay away from any Dorman part. Dorman is a garbage brand that does not last.

The only way to get anywhere with a Ford is to get rid of it. I got rid of all my Ford's and I have never been happier. I will never own another POS Ford ever again.

Thanks for the comments, sorry to hear you have had a bad experience with your Ford. We have loved our 2004 F150 4.6L since we bought it in 2008. It has 356k miles on it and it has been the best truck we have ever owned. As much as we would like to upgrade, this truck just keeps running and never misses a beat. That and we don't want to spend $80k on a new diesel truck. Thanks again for hanging out, Cheers!
