I learned to drive in a V8 110. There's just something about them. The sound, the gearbox, the feeling of solidity, they are just 'an event' to drive and I think this is a lot of the appeal. You really are engaged when driving a Defender. Love them to bits.

I have one of these - an original 3.5 V8 110 from 1989 :-D She was a LR special vehicle operations conversion and a mountain rescue ambulance for about 27 years here in the UK and only covered 79k miles Nice video!

I love my 1989 V8 110, use it for school run and shopping and of course off roading where they really come to life and most at home. The 4bbl Webber and Edelbrock dual plan inlet manifold is an improvement with high comp heads.

This is all so familiar; I've been driving my Defender 90 v8 (same age as this vehicle) almost every day for 30 years now. I fitted an uprated 3.5 engine with fast road cam and four barrel carburettor with vacuum secondaries, so yes, mine does unleash a whole load more power once the tachometer reaches the magic 3000rpm mark! For me the appeal has always been that it's a complete antidote to modern cars; it's a properly involved driving experience that's just a lot more fun.

Owned a 2011 110 for the last 6 years, was a 2.4 diesel but after 2 years, i had it customised and had an LS3 fitted, has 450ish bhp and in the Scottish highlands, its alot of fun to drive, great off road.

Ok, so... that V8 , the 'Rover V8', is the famous V8 that Rover 'acquired' from Buick in the '60s and has been used on maaaaaany British cars, including (but not just) Rover P5, Rover P6, Rover SD1, MG B GT V8, Land Rovers, Range Rovers, Morgan +8, Triumph TR8, etc etc etc....

Mine is a 90” it’s 1988 in vintage & absolutely love ❤️ it … daily drive , 12 years now in for a reprint , 300 Tdi engine boost pin in it reach axel of a discovery all new disc breaks & vented up front , all new doors, new bulkhead, Bf muds 2” lift , map 🗺 of the world as a head liner wooden top dash , pool ball as my shifter .. sooo much extras except off road

Let me give you some comments. Before the Range Rover this WAS the Land Rover. The only product. If you look after them, they are reliable, and they are up for such a beating. The older ones can be fixed by the village blacksmith and they need to be driven off road to appreciate them and to make them last better surprisingly. Over in the UK parts are cheap and you can do tons of upgrades. The resale value makes them cheap to run. In the UK the diesel makes sense. If I went back to live in the US I’d think about transplanting a local V8 into it, but the Rover V8 came from Buick originally.

Oh man, when he said how high up the rear seats are, that brought me right back to my childhood lol. Anyone who lives in the countryside of Europe grew up with a ton of these everywhere... Mainly diesels though. Still see a lot of very well maintained ones regularly. I kind of really want to have one someday. I even considered to look for one now but LR is definitely not known for their reliability and financially it wouldn’t be smart to get a second vehicle AND especially insurance at my age... The all blacked out ones or granite grey with black badging are so sick!

About the small tach; it's a common aftermarket mod. Originally from the factory there would have been a clock there instead, hence the small size.

The Rover V8 is my favourite V8. Sounds so good and whilst doesn’t deliver great power when stock or tuned it instead gives great torque. Don’t like Land Rovers or Range Rovers though. Rover SD1, LDV Sherpa, any V8 TVR and anything else with the Rover V8 is where it’s at.

Love/hate for me. One of my earliest car memories was going to Wales to buy an old '69 Series IIA Land Rover with my dad. It was fantastic with the canvas top and rear bench seats in summer, and battling through the snow and trying to find any kind of heat from the "heaters" in winter. Since then, in the world of work, I've learnt to hate the Defender 90. We would always battle over driving the Hilux, because nobody wanted a motorway trip in the defender - it was loud, it was extremely uncomfortable, and if you were driving it was just completely gutless.

It might be a bit picky, but the Defender name was not used until 1990. This truck would just be called a Land Rover 110. Besides this truck and the Land Rover 90, there were longer wheelbase versions known as the Land Rover 127 and the Land Rover 130. The long wheelbase versions did duties as fire trucks and ambulance overland campers.

The 2007-2015 is quite a lot more refined. When you can import that one you will really enjoy it. It normally comes with a Ford TDCi engine, has ABS, traction control, electric front windows and a few other basic improvements. Still pretty raw though. Please stop calling the handbrake and emergency brake. I understand that's the term Americans use but it's actually dangerous as in an emergency people might think that they should pull the "emergency brake" but all they will get is a funny smell.

Fun fact being A pre 91 model, Means that actually this is not a defender. It wold have been sold simply as the Landover 110. They were not sold as the Defender until 91 due to the Discovery being produced at the same time.

The Rover V8 is an Buick engine from the 50th that Rover build in Licence for there Limousine and LR cars. The best engine for the Defender is the Diesel engine , not so fast but much better torque then the petrol

Those Diesel Defender's engine are hard to kill! Especially the 200tdi and the 300tdi! They're very common reaching over 550k miles on them. U.K have plenty of high mileage 200tdi and 300tdi.

It’s funny how you guys associate LR with this luxury car maker brand aha! UK LandRover enthusiasts see this shift in LR as a great betrayal, they have a luxury brand - Range Rover and untill recently we all associated LR with tough rugged utility farm vehicles. Still love my old defender on 320,000 miles going strong. As for engine swaps here, people put the 3 litre m57 diesel from Bmw in OR 5.9 litre Cummins.

@@TedwardDrives oh yeah absolutely and even that school mom tradition goes back to the RR inception in UK. Don’t know if you guys had them in the states but, The original Range Rover classic was just as capable off-road vehicle as it’s cheaper cousin the series LR. Infact quite often see the classics at off road competitions with winches, diff locks and massive tyres on. Same construction style ladder chassis on beams axles. Land Rover for farmer, Range Rover for landed gentry was literally how they were marketed and used here till the introduction of the discovery In late 80’s I’d say. I wouldn’t dare take a modern RR off-road, probably get stuck 😂.

My family owns a 200TDI. It is not a nice SUV. It's quite literally used for driving around on a farm, and short trips to the town. Plus it has like 0 safety, the roof structure isn't even strong enough to support its own weight in the event of a roll over. This is why the NAS models had an external roll cage. Mind your heads. Ours hasn't had a *ton* of repairs, but it isn't Toyota reliable either. Everyone loves it to bits ( I honestly don't know why), and my dad is very reluctant to get rid of it. We replaced the head gasket in 2019, that was the last major repair it had. Ours isn't as nice as the one you drove, it is quite rough, I daren't take it over 80km/h.
