1989 Bentley Turbo R. When W.O. Bentley reluctantly sold his company to Rolls Royce in 1931, he never dreamed that his marque would become akin to the company's redheaded stepchild. Chief Engineer Mike Dunn joined the company in 1983, and one of his first tasks was to re-imagine the Mulsanne Turbo, which was pretty much a superfast Silver Spirit.

BTW, why Jay wastes his time on the road when he is rich enough to have a great French cooking chef working for him in his palace? Jay has more than enough money to have servants, including highly paid ones.

A man I admired once advised me to buy a pair of 600 dollar shoes just like his because they would last a lifetime. I hate buying shoes so I went out and got what I thought would be the last pair I would ever have to buy. Turns out the guy had a whole closet full of 600 dollar shoes and each pair only got worn occasionally. He was not lying or being malicious but his advice to young man just getting started in life was terrible. Kids , dont trade your Civic for a Bentley.

I had one of these as my everyday car for four years - loved it! Jay describes it perfectly. The silence and comfort of the ride has to be experienced and he is right about the power - it is always there. The Turbo R is a beast of a car.

Where I used to live in north Bedfordshire in the 80s and 90s a bunch of the local wealthy old men had pre-war Bentleys tucked away in their garages. At the weekend they'd blast around the back roads where I used to cycle and ride horses. They weren't going terribly fast, but it was a marvelous sight to see one being actually driven. At least one was a blower Bentley.

As Jay said, Rolls never did list the horsepower of their cars. If you went to their stats, horsepower would be listed as "Adequate" When the Turbo Bentley came out, power was listed as "More than adequate". You just gotta love it! Thank you, Jay! I love and appreciate what you do. Thank you so much for sharing! I am also another Foreign Motors alumni.:-)

As usual, reading comments on anything on the internet can make you crazy. I was really surprised that Jay had one of these, but shouldn't have been. I've always loved this era Bentley for all the reasons Jay gives. If you have never spent time in one of these, you really don't know what build quality is. Nothing made today really is like these older Rolls/Bentleys. Everything you touch is made of heavy-something. Metal. Leather. Wool. Whatever is in there is not only real, but its a lot of it and beautifully crafted down to the smallest pieces. ZThe use of heavy real materials provides a certain quiet inside that cannot be achieved otherwise. Its very different.

Hi Jay! Even though they stiffened the roll bars and upgraded the suspension, that old steel frame is what gets me. Over engineering from the start to create a product that just lasts. They charge you for it, but the overheads for quality car makers wasn't spending millions to retro grade parts, so they are in the garage more often, right? You built something that you were proud to make and people could be proud to own, and the engine and the interior and I can just keep going. Thanks again Jay!

Jay Leno, I enjoy your car videos. You're well versed in the history of each of your cars, its a total joy to hear the story of each vehicle and see your excitement while telling them. Your show is unlike other car shows that run down the spec sheet and basically give a letter grade. Thanks. 1989 Bentley with no check engine light, yet I cant repair the dreary cause of the check engine light on my 2000 audi a4 :\

Coming from England, your last statement of "There'll always be an England, there'll always be a Bentley" I entirely concur with. Over the years, we have sold off many of our great British Car Manufacturers, and the few we have left (i.e. Land Rover, Aston Martin etc) we need to preserve and cherish. I'm very glad to see you have a true appreciation of great British Craftsmanship. All the best from Cambridge UK!

I've driven a 2004 Arnage for a client for years, racking up huge miles around SoCal. Over time you grow to really appreciate the charm and unique over the road dynamics of the thing. It's like nothing else, the top models from mercedes, bmw, jaguar, lexus etc are hard to tell apart. Bentleys are like nothing else you've ever experienced. Thanx for this video.

Jay, we've met many times and you always liked my Rollses and Bentleys because they were absolutely original. My dear chap: 1. The 1952 car was not the Continental R. That appeared in 1991. You are referring to the R Type Continental. 2. The Turbo R is not a "classic example of Body on chassis design". It is a monocoque design, therefore chassisless. Cheers John

English cars were doomed by unions and demotivated management. That's why there is no British car industry today. But there were some good ones. I wish Jay would review a Triumph. I had a TR5PI and it was faultless (yes even the Lucas electrics). I photographed the odometer going from 99999 to 00000. The fuel injection did wear over time but it was mechanical - no electronics and dead easy to adjust. I could get 40mpg from it - not bad for a 2.5 liter 6. Oh and could do 140mph - before the day when they would lock you up and throw away the key!

Me, too. What was that all about? I was 15 years old. I was obsessed. I had Bentley symbols drawn all over the place, before anyone in the US knew what a Bentley was.

I think those seatbelts are US spec, you don't get those on UK Bentleys, you get the normal version.

7:15 excellent! I've been trying to explain the strangling seatbelt phenomena where you forget to unhook the belt when you got out, then next time you get into and then quickly back out of the car because you forgot something - you'll end up with backwards trying to climb away from the car while the belt is tight around your neck and slowly, almost politely dragging you into the driver footwell by the head try it, I bet that Bentley will try to calmly choke you into the floor just like an old Civic

This style of Bentley reminds me of the older Volvos. Appearing to be hewn from a single block of granite, over-engineered but with surprising performance. 275/55/15 is still a super massive tyre!

The whole point to those belts was that you'd keep them latched in. The idea was that it would let you out when you opened the door and strap you in when you closed it. The latch was only there in case the mechanism failed, so you could release it manually. Of course, all of that is a moot point when you still needed to fasten the lap belt manually! Never mind the fact that they could chafe your neck when used in such a manner; or that they'd take your head clean off if you actually were involved in an accident 'cause of how they ran across your neck... I have a strong distaste for this seat belt design. I'll never own a car with one of these.

Those seat belts were never meant to be unbuckled at the top. GM had a similar system. It was designed so people who were disinclined to buckle up were forced to.

Love this car and always wanted to get one , just like this . But it scares me , if something goes wrong , that it would cost a fortune . Some say they really don´t break down , others say , they have constant problems . Which is it . I´m even looking at one right now. Thank you

I work on Porsches so I can't answer your question. But I have also lusted after a Turbo R for quite some time. I also see vastly conflicting information on how reliable the cars are. I think if you are expecting Japanese reliability you will very sorely disappointed. I'm thinking German luxury car maintenance with slightly higher prices.
