Jonathon,here`s a story for you : I have a friend who owns a repair/tow business. Almost 2 years ago, he acquired a `97 F150 from a tow job that had a blown engine( the previous owner, a lady, probably wanted a new truck). It was very rust-free, very clean ( it even smelled nice inside ), had been garaged and periodically maintained. I bought it for what he had in it for the tow job ( $50.00 ); I had an engine from a 1-year older car that would swap into it with relatively minor `adjustments`. When I got the truck road-worthy, I quickly discovered that the rear-end howled ( pinion gear was bad ). So, I purchased a low-mileage used rear-end from a salvage-parts business. Three weeks later,a head gasket blew resulting in oil leaking down on the exhaust ( oil only - a Ford problem , verified by the local Ford Dealer mechanics ) . So , I let my friend`s mechanic fix it ( a complicated procedure on these `newer` engines that is beyond my capabilities - I`m `old-school`. ) Problems solved ( or so I thought), I then put 18,000 miles on it. While driving home last week, a lady driving beside me got my attention , pointed to the left- rear wheel, and made a wobbling motion.After pulling over, I discovered that the axle bearing was going bad. Called my tow guy and got towed to his shop, where he confirmed the problem. I replaced the axle bearing and seal the next day.( good thing I was between jobs and had some time off ).However, as I was backing out of the stall , I noticed in the mirror that the tire was still wobbling ( not the lug nuts ). Pulled it back into the stall, jack up that side of the rear-end, removed the tire and checked it on the tire machine - the rim was not bent and the tire was not deformed. Which meant that the left axle was bent ( not by me - that`s how it came in the rear-end when I got it from the salvage business - they didn`t catch it ). I put the wheel back on and drove it home for the weekend ( I had put 18,000 miles on the old bearing and it never made any bad sounds & I never felt the wobble, so 40 miles to home and back wasn`t going to hurt the new bearing & seal ). On Monday, he found me a used axle from a local salvage business , so I installed it. This time when I backed out of the stall, the wheel did not wobble ! So, yeah, got it done right `cause I did it twice ! Ha ha !

Many years ago, I had (in sheer frustration) written with a Sharpie pen on my hard hat at work "We don't have time to do the job right, but we have time to do the job over again." Boss man saw it one day and gave me some unholy ration of crap about it. Boy, was he mad. 😂 I don't mind blocking under things, but it would be safer (if you've got enough blocks) to build a box crib under each wheel, so it's more stable. Only takes a few extra minutes to look out for yourself and your workers. Good video!

Great video, I liked that you showed even when you think you have all the replacement parts for a job there’s always missing parts that are needed. Always plan for a job to take longer than it should, it will keep the frustration down in the end.

Once in awhile, it's very satisfying to just "fix something" that needs fixing and you have either been putting it off or just haven't had the time !! Seems like this could be one of those. ;o)

Well I know your exact address now. I have a cousin that lives over near Whispering Pines. They have those long pine needles all over everything there too. I put a used manual transmission in my 95 F150. The old one wore out and reverse gear was stripped, and it would not even go into overdrive. Straight 6 and 4:11 rear end. It came with a 3:73. The JD dealership changed it out. It really needed overdrive. It was a john deere company truck and had hauled some heavy equipment. Anyway, I had a very hard time pulling the transmission, and I now have problems with hopping when starting from a dead stop. I changed all u joints and the center bearing. It worked fine before. I had to use a come along and pry bars to get the old transmission out. I guess I might have bent something in the clutch. It' s always something!

Nice job, it's amazing how much abuse they will take and still work. I always stack each row of cribbing 6x6's two sideways and rotate the next level 90 degrees so they won't kick out sideways or if one fails the other will still support the vehicle. When I was young a teenager in town died when his car slid off of the blocking that was holding it up, he wasn't crushed, but didn't have enough room to breath in and out so he eventually suffocated before his friend came back from the parts store to find him. I can't think of a worse way to go, be safe, don't rush. I know that you have a redundant safety of the wrecker, I'm glad you explained that in the video.
@ddocspeck6 жыл бұрын
Years ago, a friend was working under a car that he had placed on 4 jack stands , but he had the jack stands sitting on dirt - and the vehicle had been sitting there for quite some time, so the stands had `settled` a bit. As he was wrestling a part of the exhaust system off, the car fell on him.Similar to your story, the car did not crush him, but pinned him so he couldn`t breathe resulting in his death. As such, I am ALWAYS very careful to go to extra measures to make sure any vehicle I work under is secure from moving and extra-blocked up.

Ashamed? Ashamed of what? Honest, Christian man, honest business, put food on the table, provide for your Family, you're a kind person. No shame there, except some imaginary narcissistic BS of a work truck not being Show perfect? Wow, the South sure has changed since I grew up there; Charlotte, Carolina Beach, Wilmington, Raleigh. Folks were just more grateful for what they had I guess. The only "shame" was bein lazy- and you're not.

Clutches are kinda funny. The clutch disk, clutch cover, and flywheel are designed as a system. The clutch life is denoted by the manufacturer as being a certain amount of wear of the friction material, much less than wearing it down to nothing....but how would you know? They aren't out in the bright sunshine, like disk brake pads, where you could take a peek at them once in a while. I wouldn't see someone taking the trans off the back of the engine to take a look and measure the clutch disk thickness a couple times a year. So we drive them past the official "worn out" point. The thing is, somewhere past this point, the cover clamping pressure will start to drop off and even though there is still meat on the disk, it becomes more and more likely that the clutch will start to slip. Of course, when it starts to slip, it wears the disk and the flywheel and the pressure plate in the cover and then the clamping really drops off and the ability to transmit torque just falls off a cliff. If brakes performed this way, there would be a lot more wrecks!

Wow that's different never quite thought of doing a transmission like that I guess that would work with some of our single axle trucks I don't know if we could do that with a tandem axle or tri axle with the 13 speeds and the double disc clutch we don't have a wrecker or even a front end loader that would lift the front of one of the tandem's or Tri Axel's that would work on our F800 with a little 8.3 Cummins I don't know if we could do that with the Western Star and a 14 liter Cummins never too old to learn trust me I listen to every word anything I learned from you save me a heap of trouble

The sintered metal clutches tear up more flywheels unnecessarily, they started using them as standard equipment in IH and GMC trucks in the early 80's. All the replacement clutches were those as well, to get a full face clutch disc or assembly it had to be ordered or rebuilt locally. Junk.
