But to be fair, a 5.6 0-60 and 14.xx quarter mile was considered very quick and topping out at 150mph+ was fast, and supercars did 0-60 in 4.x seconds and the quarter in low 13s/high 12a was extremely quick and topping out at 170+ was very fast. You're judging the car through the lens of today's performance, which makes the peak musclecar era cars like even the GTO and L-88 Corvette look downright slow by comparison. Today, family sedans can be optioned to make '90s supercar owners cry, without even deleting the defroster and radio. In its era, looking at it from the lens of the era, the Eclipse/Laser/Talon trio was quite respectable.

About suspension mods: Lowering is often a mistake. On some cars, it can mess up the suspension geometry and made some aspects of handling WORSE. Say, understeer, for instance. If you want to make your car more agile and predictable at the limit, stiffer bushings (if you can get them) is the way to go, along with stiffer dampers, but you'll pay with ride comfort, if you care. Stiffer anti-roll bars may raise your cornering limits, and by moving the centre of roll resistance can reduce (or increase if that's what you want) understeer, with the consequence that those limits will be reached more abruptly. Julian Edgar has a good channel about this and related subjects.

@VulpesHilarianus4 ай бұрын
It's a shame the conversation got cut off at the end, but that feeling of the car generating it's own downforce is... I haven't felt that in any modern "normal" car. If anything the front end gets lighter the faster you go. There's such a push for city speed fuel efficiency aerodynamics (45-60MPH) in modern cars that the focus on high speed stability is completely forgotten. Which is ironic considering with the power of modern cars that highway speeds are faster than ever before, with people staying at 85MPH on the interstate like it's nothing.
@engineerisengihere444 ай бұрын
The guy in the video has no idea what he is talking about lol. I am a mechanical engineer (if you couldn't tell by the name), having a lower drag coefficient (the way he is describing it at least) would make the car feel as though it is lifting off the ground, not planting into the ground. That is why when you put a huge spoiler on the back of a car the drag coefficient increases, but so does downforce. Now the car MIGHT actually feel like that at higher speeds, but that has literally nothing to do with the drag coefficient and more to do with the shape of the car.
@VulpesHilarianus4 ай бұрын
@@engineerisengihere44 That... I'm admittedly not an engineer, but did study to be one. And from what I understand normally the car only generates lift if the air is forced *around* the front, because with an underhang from the bumper being extended it creates low pressure spots on the leading edge of the bumper., meaning the air's forced up and over those low pressure spots instead of along the top surface (meaning you're missing what little non-induced downforce you were getting), where the rest goes for the volume of low pressure with the least amount of resistance, that being under the car. This problem gets worse the faster the car goes as the pressure pushes the car backwards, lifting it up because the front suspension decompresses while the rear suspension compresses, albeit very slightly. That's why the S30 Nissan/Datsun Z cars or the pre-facelift Fox body Mustangs are so unstable at high speeds. Normal non-exotic cars that followed the "aero organic" styling trend from the late 1980s onward tended to create shelves at the very bottom of the bumper mimicking the lip trays on IMSA/WEC cars or at least had little extruded edges on the far ends of the bumper that forced the air into a low pressure channel along an arc to prevent this (as seen on the Ford Probe, SN-95 Mustang, Dodge Daytona facelift, Pontiac Grand Prix, third generation Chevrolet Cavalier -- especially the Z24), as the stability concern wasn't a problem until the 1974 Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act was repealed and cars were allowed to go faster than 55MPH. When modern cars started integrating the bumper to be an extension of the hood instead of being an underhang (like the eighth generation Honda Civic, the facelifted Ford Fusion and second generation, or the eighth generation Chevrolet Malibu) this front extrusion wasn't as needed, as the topside leading edge that created the low pressure area was gone. But as the front ends of the vehicles have gotten taller and surface area bigger, the high pressure area has gotten larger, meaning that the air wants to go to the fastest path -- underneath the car. Thus making modern cars feel a lot more squirrelly at high speed and somewhat recreating the problems of cars from the 1960s and 1970s.

We had a few of those growing up, an eagle talon and a Plymouth laser. They were such cool cars. The body lines on this car are just fantastic. Such a smooth and aerodynamic look. Love it.

I loved my 1.8L non-turbo Laser. Such a fun car to hit the road. It was definitely a three seater at best. It really hugged the road.

I think the DSM cars peaked with the AWD Talon TSI. In the day it was a legitimate, fast, good handling car that was highly regarded and very desirable.

I enjoyed the factor sponsorship thing you did. It was like hangin with you after car day. Cool and candid.

14:00 On lowering: Another thing. Unless your tires are sticky, that suspension won't actually make you much faster. Especially if you have a FWD or front heavy car like that. When you stiffen the springs you take force away from the sway bars, that means if you've fit a big rear sway bar to make the car playful, it will now work less because the wheel travel will be less. Now, yes you can also do that with spring rate (stiffer rear) but then you get odd ride qualities out of that so typically they go for more normal spring rates. Especially if you enjoy driving on gravel or in snow, your stiffer suspension will make the car more understeery.

I remember when Motor Trend crowned the Laser/Talon twins as the 'best bang for the buck', beating out the Fox body Mustang, for the first time.

I test drove a then new, one of these. I was shopping for a new car and while I really liked the styling and the interior's fit and finish I opted for a 1990 GTi. I spent less on my GTi but got a more engaging car to drive and it was immensely practical (I could legit get my friends in the back and out again) for most things I needed to do (skiing, general construction, hooning, etc..) Couple years later two different friends of mine had this car and they loved he cars. Great review as always!

15:22 Sure I love cars. But the real reason I watch RCR is because of your spectacular use of language. The phrasing that occurs at the time that I have marked is just beautiful use of language. Sometimes your language is vulgar but it is still spectacular and beautiful. That's why I watch this channel. Well done. You brought me into a nostalgia for a car I forgot I had nostalgia for.

Cool! My little brother got one of these when he joined the Air Force. It was the first year it was introduced and it was a lot nicer looking than a lot of what else was out there. His was light blue and looked really sharp. It was offered with a T-top so he asked his friends who had them how they liked them. "Oh, it's really great! Well, yeah, It leaks…" was the usual response so he went for the moonroof.

I owned a 91 eagle talon Tsi when I was 18, had it for 2 years. Had to fix it all the damn time. At 35 now I’ve owned many cars and that’s the one I still love the most. Ya I have a fiesta st now and it is fun to drive and Autocross, but the way that thing came on boost and how you could rotate it was amazing!

25+ year DSM'er checking in here. Great video, and very interesting car with the N/A 4G64 swap. These cars did not have a drag coefficient of .25. It was more like .32-.35. The early 2g cars were even more slippery than that. Secondly, the DSM partnership did not bring us the Galant, that car existed way before the partnership began, and the Galant was not built at the DSM factory until after the partnership ended and it was just Mitsubishi Motors of North America (MMNA) at that point. Same goes for most of the Colt/Summit/Mirage cars as well.

Yes, thank you!!! I get really annoyed when people spout off absurd numbers based on nothing. I appreciate the owners enthusiasm but lets keep things honest here. 😆

All I want is a 1990 Talon or Laser. My family had to sell our 1990 Talon to keep the lights on during a very difficult year, a year before I was going to obtain my license. It was the family car that got away. My grandfather would put the baby-seat in the hatchback so I could wave at the cars behind him- the early 90's was a fun time. These cars have their problems, but by god, they're magical.

You know it's going to be a good RCR video when it's a sporty FWD car from the 90s.

I don't think enough people know that stiffer springs, stiffer shocks, lowered ride height, stiffer bushings, larger anti roll bars and larger wheels with low profile tires doesn't always make your car handle better on normal roads. In fact depending on how far you go with all that stuff it can make the car handle worse, sometimes much worse. Way back in 2001 I bought a 1994 Honda Prelude that someone had modified, a lot and the suspension got most of the attention. It looked great. It was low, had gunmetal gray magnesium wheels and most of the stuff I mentioned above. Of course t ride quality was shit but on smooth roads it excelled. However while driving it on a not so perfect interstate one day at a speed I shouldn't have been at I wound up doing a 720 after a dip in the road. When you make everything stiff and low the car can't keep it's composure on roads that have fast changes of elevation, potholes, cracks and tar snakes. The car becomes dangerous and unpredictable. Rally cars don't just have increased ride height to clear all those bumps, they also have softer suspension setups to deal with the irregularities. Look you can mod your car however you like but we who spend far too much time studying cars can call you stupid for spending tons of money to make your car worse than before you began while thinking you done good. You didn't. You done stupid boy. Stop it.
