I served this very army in 1988/89 and I digested lots of this packages. I think there were three of them, A, B and C with varrious content which was produced in food companies all over former Yugoslavia. In this, I miss mixture of coffe and honey and also "dvopek" (very dry compresed crumbles or something like that). Nevertheless, they were quite eatable. SDO means Suvi Dnevni Obrok or in english Dry Daily Meal but we call it Smrt Dolazi Odmah or in english Death Comes Instantly. BTW, I know for sure that some fish factories (like the one which produced sardines in this video) produced the same cans with sardines for US Army (cans were without any labels, only sign: US Army and date of production).

Dvopek was actually used for self defense when you find yourself trapped without ammo on enemy territory, since he's so hard and tough that you can kill a man if you hit him properly in the head. And cardboard box that SDO was packed in was far more tastier than dvopek itself, and this is the first time ever that I hear that someone misses that. I was a cook in the army and there was very difficult to make hot meal for breakfast made out of dvopek mixed with cheese, cooked and then baked in the oven. Soldiers gave it a nickname Brick, because it was hard as a brick and as tasty as brick. :-D But on the other hand canned beans with bacon or with sausage was phenomenal and right now I would trade one kidney for one can of that goodness!

Very good review, as always. That was smart thing not to eat anything from those cans, I remember it from the army and it was grose even fresh with strong taste of metal. Yugoslav army MRE was called SDO which stands for 'suvi dnevni obrok' i.e 'dry daily meal' and it was meant to last whole day. That can of ground meat is called 'Mesni narezak' and tasted like ham, fish can was ok, but the third one was in fact the ugliest and the most hated horror meal which soldiers called Rizi Bizi (Reezee Beezee) and the consistence was rice, green beans or peas, chunks of peppers and meat- we ate only meat from it. As you said that tea was the best thing, everybody liked it but it was not for sale in supermarkets. Only army had the 'privilege' to drink it.

Wow that's amazing. It's interesting that soldiers called it Rizi Bizi. In Hungary, we sometimes make something called Rizi Bizi, usually it just means white rice with vegetables which was in 99% of cases green peas and sometimes carrots. We would then serve it with Breaded Chicken breast, Wiener Schnitzels, or Porkolt (beef stew). So it's definitely the same dish. I'm sure someone that's far older than me would be able to detail the lore of where Rizi Bizi actually came from. I doubt its a Hungarian word, though Rizi is close to "Rizsa" which means Rice in Hungarian. The rhyme like nature of it, makes me think that it's probably playful slang from back in the day. The way the same dish has the same name in both Hungary and in past Yugoslavia makes me think it could be an Eastern Block related meal. Maybe someone else knows more about Rizi Bizi. It could also be a play on Risotto which is a very similar dish.

The fruit bar, tea and candy were delicious and the sardines from Rovinj are top quality. I never liked doručak (breakfast) meat a lot (I hate the smell), but my mum and dad would eat that for breakfast. I think our army rations were much better than most countries.

It's just one of a Yugoslav Army ration packs. And, I still remember taste of it.Main meal like this one was so-so but, chopped pork (spam) is excellent. For Muslims there was same thing but made from lamb/sheep meat and, as I can remember, it was surprisingly good (no, I'm not a Muslim and I don’t like lamb meat), better than pork.Sardines are OK but much better was another fish - mackerel filet in rounded can, something spectacular, something I am still looking to find today.Instant tea was very good but energy bar made from compressed dry fruits (figs, raisins, plums, and apple) were something special.And, those bonbons are pure apple or orange flavored dextrose.

I served 1982/83 and what I can tell you that fruit bar (at least in my time) was compressed figs and that was my favorite. I could eat one and it'll give me energy for half a day. The best trick with these MRE's was to always have raw onion in your pocket to enhance your eating experience. For example, I had a can of lamb meet that was 15 years older than me and with a little onion and bread was the best meal ever (after a whole day of handling and shooting 155mm howitzer at the range).

@@hankhill6916 I believe it varies from decade to decade. In this video, first thing Steve pulls out is a bag of tea extract. Honestly, I don't remember. I always made sure I have fine-ground coffee to make Turkish coffee. In the field there will be fire. In the barracks, we would use water heater made of power cable (like for table lamp), two razor blades, separated with two plastic buttons. Plug it in, place razor blades in the water and in two minutes there will be boiling water.

That's what we used to do with the old Compo rations in the UK in the 80s. I'd always take an onion, a small wrap of curry powder and a small bottle of vegetable oil with me, this meant you could turn the Stew-Beef into a respectable Beef Curry. 😊

That dried fruit candy 'Budimka' has been made in Budimka food factory, Požega town, Socialistic Republic of Serbia, Yugoslavia. Factory was well known for its apple juice and beef goulash among other stuff. After war, transition and privatisation it was finally closed in 2o16. I know its a pretty useless information. But, here you go :-) Edit: Budimka factory is reopened in 2020. It's a far cry from its golden days but I'm surprised they (authorities) didn't teared it down and build apartments there.

In european armies, MRE-s are not used as frequently as in the US military. European armies mostly rely on field kitchens. MRE-s are used only in conditions where you can not use a field kitchen - like on a longer patrol or so. Otherwise, the emphasis is to feed soldiers with freshly cooked food when ever possible. I newer saw the a Yugoslav MRE, I just heared about them from people who served in the JNA as conscripts (Yugoslav People's Army). Thanx for the video. :-)

A B C or D on box represents how 'strong' meal is...how much calories it has...in that time, A rations were distributed to troops on field like border guard troops... b c or d rations were distributed in barracks, or proving grounds .... also there were special forces' (or pilot's) rations in aluminum box that contained powdered milk tablets, salt tablets, water purification tablets, potassium permanganate, dextrose, isotonic instant drink powder, instant tea, painkillers, miniature stove with smokeless fuel...food content: can of beans with smoked bacon, jerky pack, cabbage with meat and lagre can of beef meat (900grams) that was not ment to be eaten alone, it was planned for whole squad ( 2 or 3 guys open theirs and squad makes feast to boost morale)...fruit bar, sardine, liver pate and canned meat, and crackers that were inedible, hard as concrete... That's content of two types of those we found in our barrack (airborne unit) ....made in 1990, we ate it in 2013 tasted good and we are still alive...

It was a mandatory 15 months army service in 1985 before starting the study at the university. After three months of cook school and training in the military, I became a cook. Combined with my previous completed grammar school (by knowledge level like finishing the second university in the USA.) I have also got a certificate as a "pro" cook. I remember the various rations, some also included one time use burner to warm the ration. We were trained to cook "on the fly" so the army mostly got the warm meal three times a day when being on the field, sometimes even a few weeks marches. My service was in a semi-arid area of Krivolak, nowadays North Macedonia, and the main care was the hygiene to keep the cooking gear clean - days with rations were a hard-earned holiday for a cook ;)

@davek128 жыл бұрын
Just start drinking before the video and don't stop. He's going to eat something that is older than your dad if he hasn't already. Some of the stuff that he's given rave reviews have looked terrifying. If the MRE packers and the government haven't paid you for your testing of these meals, they should. Call it a consulting fee with an interview and money in exchange for use of your thorough evaluation of some downright ancient food that they made.

Oh gosh dude I've been watching your videos for quite awhile now ( I really really enjoy them especially the "dinner" likely main meals) but you should do an edited video of you saying "Nice" :) it's waaaay to satisfying to hear that I personally wind back on the video just to hear that "Nice" P.S keep up the great work buddy you definitely got my support :)

Is the hiss in the can good or bad?
@duncangilbert6228 жыл бұрын
bad
@coltenmeyer27758 жыл бұрын
Depends. If its vacummed sealed a hiss means it kept its seal, if its a can usally means it spoiled and gave off "gases" which is usally quite foul.
@acrutix8 жыл бұрын
It suggest that snake meat was used.
@metalslimehunt8 жыл бұрын
With a can, you typically want only a small hiss, like opening a bottle of soda. None suggests the can is compromised, a lot suggests it wasn't compromised but rotted and produced methane.
