I just finished restoring a 91 4x10. My PRRI is up for sale and I won’t miss it. It’s also dethroned a 63 VVRI, Fargen, and others. It’s everything I love about voxes, Marshall’s, and fenders all rolled into one amp. If I had to describe the tone, I’d say an appropriate name would be Brownface AC Superlead Reverb.

In my opinion the biggest lesson one can take from Johan is... If you have great taste. You understand gain staging and dynamics. You know what you are looking for. You can get great tones from ANY reasonably decent amplifier.

I've got the 4x10 version and the head. Both from the first production years in the mid 90's. Most reliable amps I've ever had and sounds that range from (almost) Fender cleans to Marshall dirt. The reverb was livable but the overall value and dependability were unmatched in the 90's. Great studio and touring amps.

Agreed, I have an early run 4x10 and you can dial in a huge range of tones that are easily on par with any number of classic and boutique amps. Definite sleepers and near bulletproof.

I had one of these, and later on, I had a 30-Watt, 1x15 Peavey Delta Blues (very similar amp). They never, ever let me down. Definitely the most consistently good sounding amps I've owned. I sold the Delta Blues to a friend who's a pro. It's been her main gigging amp for 15 years. I doubt she's done anything to it other than keep playing it.

I forgot that this was an amp demo for a while there. I was enjoying your playing ... I loved the old 70s Classic 50 back when it came out. Our lead guitarist almost bought one; but while the drive sounds were beautiful, the clean tone broke up too early for him to use. No mic'ing of amps back then, not for small gigs. He went with a 100W Master Volume Marshall instead (can't remember if he bought a Master Vol or had his old one modded). Brasher tone but still plenty of power /headroom for cleans.

Bought one around '92 or '93, not long after they came out, in 2x12. I still have it, still play it all the time. Fantastic value, made in Mississippi. I think I paid $350 brand new at Clark's in ATL. Same day I bought that I played a brownface Vibroverb reissue in the store for an hour or so - wish I'd bought one of those at the same time, it's still one of my favorite clean tones and they didn't sell many, almost impossible to find on the used market...Classic 50s, otoh, are all over the used market.

Such a GREAT amp. Dann Huff showed just how good this amp was, as well... I'm a bit surprised (and a little disappointed) that you didn't show the spectacular uber-crunch this amp has. That said, this was a spectacular video on the tweed side of this amp. For the money, I'm not sure there's a better, more versatile product.

Played a Peavy combo in a store about 20 years ago to test out a Roger M. Ocatver. The amp was great . Was a used tweed , well worth 499.00. Had to be a pricey build because it had (4) 6V6s for power . Couldn't afford 500.00 at the time , wish I could have bought it . Got the rare , rocket plane shaped pedal instead . At 100.00 , it was well worth the money .

Another outstanding video Johan! I think you must have demoed nearly all available tube amps by now. But would love to see you take a Fender Blues Deluxe (original 90’s version or reissue) through its paces, especially cranked up. It is a common “workhorse” type amp where I come from (Canada), used for country, blues and rock. Not sure if you have seen it in your part of the world! Take care! 👍🏼

Gotta love the Classic series amps. Great sounds for not that much money! Both the Classic 30 and the Delta Blues were on my radar for a while. At the time, they were just TOO much amp for my situation. (apartment dweller at the time) So they got used as reference amps to test out other gear. Still kicking myself for not getting that Delta Blues... Loved the tremolo! Nice Fender-ish cleans and low gain crunch- and plenty more gain on tap, if you wanted it! And they love P-90s.

I know the Seventy 80s don't tend to get a lot of love but I have a set of Red Labels that are well broken in and sound awesome. True they can tend to sound harsh initially, but broken in and the amp tweaked properly they offer great clarity and tight low end in my experience. I find they are best suited in a 1x12 or paired with a different model if using more than one. Otherwise they can become a bit too bright. Cheers and Happy New Year!

I think where the Peavey classic 50 falls short of a Bassman is in the phase inverter. Cathodyne inverters were used in the early 50s, but the late 50s is where the magic happened, with the long tail pair. The power tube distortion is much better IMO. Happy New Year!

The Peavey Classic series is such a weird beast. The Classic 30 has some of the most insanely bad build decisions in an amp with its tri-fold PCB and even the Classic 50 has some questionable directly PCB mounted tubes hooked together with ribbon cables, yet they somehow manage to sound good and mostly work just fine.

Do you mean the earlier Peavey Classic amp? These were typically a 6L6GC power section with a solid-state preamp.

@@toddneary yea classic 50s that are all tube driven I'd like to see or hear a side by side of the 2 not a shoot out or anything like that just the 2 classics side by side.

Owned (and worked on) Classic 50 & Classic 30. They sound good (classic 30 better) but internals are a real PITA to work on & many small issues that just weren’t worth keeping. When they work, they sound good but I wouldn’t gig one.

The Classic 30s are known for their issues, but what problems and 'many small issues' have you had/seen with the Classic 50 that would make them not worth keeping? Just asking out of curiosity. I've seen a Classic 50 fall from the back of a van, tumble down the street, be picked up, brought to the venue, plugged in and fired up, then gigged for the night without issue. Other than some scuffs, torn tolex and maybe a cracked knob, good to go.

Some one put some celestions 7080 in it which probably helped this one scream the way it did.

There's no expensive magic involved with amplifiers. They're relatively simple devices when compared to current technology.

Great amps. I wonder why they are referred to as budget amps. They're not cheaper than, say a Vox AC30 C2, but definitely have much better components and build quality.

Nice demo but for the record they're nothing like the tweed amps of the 50's ..except for possibly the small-ish transformers used.Otherwise it's fixed bias, greater B+ filtering, solid state rectified, all 9 pin tubes, master volume plywood, cermic speakers, etc.Even the "tweed" is not tweed it's vinyl :)

@johansegeborn Hey man you should do a video with a Peavey Classic 100 stack! There's like 0 content featuring those on youtube and they're just as badass as a 50 with more power!

After hearing you play a ton of other amps, this one is not one of my favorites. It just lacks depth and punch. Am listening to through my cell phones speaker, and may be losing something. I like your tone with the Marshall stacks.

Get some studio monitors. Your cell phone just sucks bitrate. This thing sounds killer on studio monitors. You can't judge an already compressed KZbin audio clip and then listen on a phone of all things.

@@JohanSegeborn hello Johan and Happy New Year to you. Just reading these comments on tone quality via studio speaker and headphones etc. Would it be an idea to make available the original audio files of your videos say under a link on a website? That way we could hear the original and not just the KZbin compressed version. Or are we hearing close to the original? Cheers Trevor
