1991 Subaru Legacy EJ25 Swap: Regular Car Reviews

We were loaned a 1991 Subaru Legacy into wchich was swapped a DOHC EJ25 with a larger throttle body and a very "Subro" exhaust. But the suspension and stearing was great and perfect for New Zealand's South Island's roads. Thank you to Ruben from "Dirty Ol' BC" for loaning us this car!

Hrmm they really are very flawed cars that have a myriad of issues. Their awd system and ground clearance is useful here in NZ in the snow etc but blurring the line between they are good cars and they are a good car for you (accepting many issue's like weak transmissions, headgaskets, bearings, notoriously difficult to do basic maintenance etc) that's quite different. You're just an enthusiast, which is fine. But the cars are not good cars

Having listened to the podcasts, I think I speak for everyone in saying that we really appreciate you taking time out of your day to get footage when you’re just trying to relax a bit in the Earth’s bonus track. I love how you mixed up "Taurus" and "tourist" as I do the EXACT same thing. I live in Las Vegas so I'm constantly aggravated at tourists slow/distracted driving, but I also drive a Taurus so that tends to be the word I say during mumbling my displeasure.

Honestly that ej25D dohc in a first gen out back with a stick is kind of the most fun non-turbo legacy/ob you can buy. They're geared shorter than an ej253 legacy, and feels way more spunky. I just sold mine the other day, and out of that, an ej253 legacy, and a turbo ej255 legacy gt I've had, it was almost my favorite. Especially since it was free

You genuinely sound like you know what you are talking about. A 25D in a light chassis is a great beater/daily. The USDM 99 Legacy L with a direct 251 swap is even better.

My aunt had one of these back in the 90s (RS turbo manual) and it was great. Turbo boost and lag. Got stolen twice as Subaru is no.1 with thieves. Pre 04 Subaru is easy to steal with frameless doors and standard locks, and were the most stolen cars for years in beautiful NZ.

That’s an EJ25D, EJ25 could be any of a few different engines. The EJ25D is the DOHC non turbo, the newer version is the EJ251 also non turbo but SOHC. Then they have the EJ255 and EJ257 which are the turbo motors WRX and STi respectively. I prefer nonturbos as there are a lot less problems and a lot more reliability.
