I learned to drive in a yellow manual 1973 Volvo wagon in Pennsylvania,in 1983! The clutch biting point was VERY high! Handbrake off to the left,between the seat & door & it had 4 three point inertia reel retractable seat belts,rare in 1973...I think Volvos & Saabs may have been the first cars to have them! It also had a little rear facing seat you pulled out,in the cargo area! 😍😍

You failed to mention that there’s an airbag in the steering wheel and it’s one of those pillowy 90s airbag steering wheels like you normally mention on cars from this era. Though Volvo actually began having that style steering wheel with an airbag in the late 80s or so.

Good review! I like the 80's and 90's Volvos more now than I did when they were new. You're absolutely right in that they don't try to pretend to be something their not. They're just comfortable load luggers, and amazingly safe with it! As I've grown older (I'm 52!) those features are more important to me now. My wife now drives a V60 and we previously had an XC90, but the proper boxy old Volvos are retro-cool in my eyes. You have a new subscriber :)

The brick. These cars are so functional they've become stylish. Old Volvos are slow and expensive to maintain but if you have the money they'll run forever. I've never seen a seatbelt light in the back seat. Is there some rule that if you're Puerto Rican that you must hang a Puerto Rico flag from the mirror? I see those flags in cars everywhere.

You shoul try to get your hands on a naturally aspirated 16 valve B230. They make the same power as the turbo models with just a different head. Imagine how powerful those rare 16 Valve 740 Turbos are. Im turboing my 83 244 with oem equipment and accessories. im grabbing virgo wheels that came on the turbo models and oem gauges this weekend
@zloychechen51507 ай бұрын
The b234f is a total pain in the ass these days. It's ok in terms of driveability, quite enjoyable in the 50-120 kph range, but first i had a quest to get a timing belt tensioner, then the radiator went, it overheated somewhat, so the head gasket let go, and we decided not to put it back together, because the cylinder walls were totally smooth (and oval). Swapping a vq30det now. The turbo 16v is nice, but it's better just to have an aftermarket ecu on an 8v turbo along with a bigger snail, a bigger charge cooler, and a vx3 cam.

It's always fun to compare US model 740 to the EU model (or at least Northern EU model) as the US model had A/C, 4x electric windows, electric mirrors, sunroof and leather seats pretty much as standard, meanwhile in the Northern EU your standard options were power locks and heated seats (even with cloth seats) lol and especially in my home country majority of these car sold here had the NA 2 liter carbureted engine. Oh and to no surprise, manuals were much more common in here and automatics were option. I have a 740 turbo myself as well that was sold here when new, the only options it had (apart from power locks and heated seats as those came in pretty much every 740 here) are cruise control and outside temperature gauge :P
@markhealey9409 Жыл бұрын
Surely buy the 90s Volvos sold in your country had an a/c option?? By the mid 90s even most small cars in England had a/c as an option...it was mainly only an option here before the 90s on high end trim levels of medium & large cars....there were a few exceptions though,the main ones I can think of were most Hondas sold here in the 80s,they had an option of a/c....I think it was an approx £600 option here in England though,if I remember correctly. In 1986 I had a friend who had a 1981 or 1982 Triumph Acclaim(basically a British built Honda Civic/Ballade saloon/sedan) & it had a/c! ❄️❄️
@Fang4G63T Жыл бұрын
@@markhealey9409Some did but the majority didn't, A/C was becoming more and more common in the very late 90s and in the 2000s A/C was in many cars sold here, tho in the 80s and early 90s having a car with a lot of options was rare as they were very expensive because the options affected the taxation of the car

I´m so confused of the Volvo line-up in US for MY 1992. 940 and 740 seems so similar. In Europe we only had 740 with base engine only year, the 740 was like the entry level car. 940 you could get either with base motor or Turbo. 940 did also have a different front end than 740. In North America I guess you had the same front end for 740 and 940 in 1991 and 1992?

Loved Volvo's up to 2016. After that don't like their designs and their quality went south, probably due to Chinese ownership. It has lost its Volvo heritage and Swedishness. I've owned a 1994 740 sedan, 2005 XC90 V8 and wife drove a 2007 S80 V8 and a 2014 XC90 3.2 and finally an XC70 wagon T6. Great vid BTW, keep them coming.

I have NEVER seen a car here in Europe w/ the front & rear fog lights on the same switch,that presumably HAVE to be turned on together!! Rear fog lights have been mandatory in Europe since 1980....and almost all cars in The US that have factory fitted rear fog lights are European made cars....I think there was an Olds made in the US that actually had them factory fitted and integral,I never noticed any other American built cars with them! Obviously some people buy after market rear fog lights in North America & retrofit them under the bumper. I never understood why they were never mandated in the USA,most of the USA has periods of heavy fog at times,especially at night,even in drier less humid areas,such as the Central Valley in California,where they get tule fog! Conversely,I always thought it stupid that Europe never mandated side marker/position lights on vehicles! It would be interesting to know if this model of Volvo was sold in Europe w/ one fog light switch for front & rear fogs!?
@devinprasad34499 ай бұрын
That fog light switch will independently turn on either front or back. Not sure if the fronts need to be on in order for the back to turn on also, can’t remember. But I don’t see fogs on the front of the car. With that front clip they were usually on the bottom of the bumper

Great video of an awesome car. I can’t believe the condition it is in. I have a 93 940 turbo wagon that is nearly identical to this. (Video of it below) kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKCueIOVqdqcmposi=gXf_gMPAQxBwl6qg I think the 740 was even boxier than the 940 with a slightly taller hood and headlights, making it even more unashamedly a brick…which I love! 😉
