I remember the first time I blind played this, years back, and being terrified when they finally appeared. It's so incredibly unnerving. Something fun to note is that any map where they spawn always starts with 1 monster, which is an invisible spawner that's directly below Doomguy under the floor at all times, and it will continue to spawn the heads exponentially over time until you clear the level, ensuring even with guns cheated in you can never kill them all. Also fun to note that in Icon of Sin, there are like 4 spawners, and they pump out heads at an alarming rate, effectively crashing the game (or your computer if you're unlucky like I was back then) after a short amount of time. Russian download sites are truly misunderstood. The thing about them is that if I'm looking for files that are either hard to find or are simply copyright protected, 90% of the time russian sites will still have them. Meanwhile any english or other language sites almost NEVER have the balls nor relevancy to host them. It's always russian sites usually for some reason. As for the whole "virus risk", not only have I had little to no such experiences with any russian sites such as yandex or old russian forums and mod sites containing download links, but often times those sites are built as if they crawled out if the early 2000s. This is good because if the sites are that old, that means any scumbag advertisers and scammers worth their weight in gold wouldn't be caught dead hanging out there. My guess is that because the sites are so old, it may prove to be difficult to code those more advanced and pesky modern ads and popups you see nowadays. Namely unskippable videos that appear from the corner of the screen, fake text messages (on a PC? Seriously?), fake virus/raffle winners that hijack the URL and require spamming the back button to get out of, etc. All of these almost never appear on any rusdian sites I've ever been to. Viruses are usually easy to figure out. If it's a basic mod, rom, or iso, or any basic data file, it's almost guaranteed to not be a virus. If it's an installer, scan it with a virus or malware scanner of your choosing and make sure to uncheck any extras the installer offers. If it's an apk, make sure the installer shows an icon for the app. Because if it doesn't, that's a dead giveaway. Same for if the apk is only a few kilobytes. Dead giveaway. Chances are, if it's the file you're looking for, it'll range from 50-500 megabytes. So that's why when I'm looking for a file and I start seeing russian text or a .ru in the URL, I grin and get the feeling I'm on the right track. Russian sites are a pirate's... or archiver's best friend.

@@Starving_indev I only ever run into that problem if the game I want is so obscure that nobody would think to make a torrent of it. I remember once trying to pirate Super Meat Boy back when it forst came out. The first torrent I found was a porn of the same name. The next was some bizzare knockoff fan game called "meat boy and tofu boy" or something like that. All the rest were either not what I was looking for or just had no seeders. Also, nowadays it certainly makes sense to want to try the game via torrent before buying it since the AAA industry is so broken these days. Microsoft got the "brilliant" idea to give me game pass for free for a few months around the SAME TIME Halo Infinite came out. And let me tell ya, I was skeptical as hell about it from the start. But never have I gotten to play a game for free and still somehow feel scammed. Open world + the grapple absolutely *DESTROYED* the difficulty of Legendary and made it feel like a joke. Glad I didn't waste a dime on that garbage.

The mod seems really shallow. But I really like the enemy behavior - they teleport, go through walls and can one shot you. But they also die in one hit, attack slowly can be ran through and you can dodge their attack easily.

⁠​⁠@@Flesh_Wizard It’s just a speculation, but this mod could be an allegory of the infamous serial killer Andrei Chikatilo (aka the Rostov Ripper) who abused and erased over 50 women and children in a span of almost 12 years. The map’s colours are washed out since supposedly a Purgatory is a rather gloomy place, all Doomguy has is a knife: a primary and cliche weapon of choice for serial killers, and the floating baby heads (who are called HATE as OP stated) are his vengeful victims.

It's probably a troll wad just to spook the player, yeah, but if one tries one can find some connecting pieces. From what you've shown, the most text-relevant thing are the difficulties - which also seemed to be highlighted in a strange fashion. Have you played the game in the different difficulties to see if there are any differences in gameplay? If you did and it stays the same, then probably the best we can suppose is probably the stages of someone undergoing some sort of mental issue (as is the style with these wads) that just gets worse and worse. "Apathy" and "Alienation" are coloured white, and could mean external factors - people first not caring about the person's condition and eventually alienating them from their community as the condition worsens. "Insanity" and "Parergasia" are coloured red, which could be internal factors - the character's condition deteriorating. And the black "Delusional insanity" is the breaking point, essentially. So Apathy of the surroundings leads to insanity of the character, which leads to alienation of the community in response. Being left by their own devices, their condition deteriorates and the ghastly echo chamber in their heads snaps their sanity, ergo "delusional insanity", and that leads them to commiting actions they may not want to. Which leads to baby carnage I guess. Or it's just a shitty spoopy wad to make mexicans poop them pantalones

Honestly this makes me think of an old horror mod for sonic robo blast 2 i played years ago. Ghoulgfz or something. It just turns the first level into a dark night version of its itself with no enemies. Instead a bloodied up version of john romero's head would just randomly pop up on top of you, disappear soon after, then pop up again killing you instantly with a loud scream. No rings were in the level but if you spawned a ring it would damage you over and over until you died. If you hit an invincibility box it would die when trying to attack and spawn again about a minute later. If you beat the level the rest of the game had no enemies or rings but the monster would never spawn correctly. Youd see it where normal enemies would be and they would act normal

IIRC the look of the stages color palette, sounds, enemies, weapons etc. all change based on the difficulty level you chose, for instance if you played on easiest difficulty the game would look and play totally different than it would on the hardest difficulty. Midnight. Ive seen a few different run throughs of this mod, I think your right. its exactly that, a liminal space. As you said its 1993, and Doom II didnt release until 1994. Basically think of backrooms, but in doom. there are many possibilities as to why the baby heads are there and act the way they do. and Ive come down to 2 possibilities. 1)It possibly could be a metaphor towards mental illness, like as the difficulty name suggests. schizophrenia with prosopagnosia. so not only do you feel attacked by your own mind, you constantly feel surrounded by unrecognizable people, thus feeling attacked. 2) it could just be that its there because there jump scare like, and the author may have went a little nuts with the jump scares and didnt program them right. making the game borderline unplayable as well as pure shock value and creepy. or it could be made intentially vague to make you think with no intention of ever revealing what it actually represents. love the content dude. keep up the good work.

Anyone remember this wad where you are in a forest and have a bow and very limited amount of arrows and you have to fight three (or four?) increasingly difficult jumpscare enemies? Ghoul Forest or something? It's probably not as scary as I remember but I don't think I ever beat it. I always chicken out at the Yurei fight in the end

the first two levels which were empty reminded me of naissancee, which is also set in brutalist maze megastructure where you are alone, only sounds are wind, whirring of gigantic mechanisms and your own footsteps. no bakstory, no dialogue, no cutscene, you just thrown into a cramped up, almost claustrophobic place, which is eventually replaced by huge hall. and everything is black and white, there are no colors, just metallic grey walls, pitch-black darkness and blindingly bright white
