Some mistakes need to be be made in order to learn from them. The lesson here: *Nightmare! is for replay value only.* Cheats aside, not only does it give an inaccurate first impression of a wad when used on an initial run, but if you do manage to beat it, then there's nothing left you can do to further spice up a repeat playthrough.

What I like about this mod is its simplicity. You either find the portal or die. The mazes and darkness are all that's left for your fears to run rampant. Not even music to accompany you, just the beating drum that gets faster or slower depending how close you are to Evil.

Whilst this mod plays upon my fears of the dark pretty well (and I just don’t handle scares all that great, despite my love for horror), it’s not even close to being traumatizing. Leaving me wide eyed and peering over my bedsheets for a bit? Sure, but it’s just a png chasing you with some spooky lighting, not much else. I feel a little silly being so spooked about it but even then I think the title is hyperbolic. It’s scary and it does that job well, but it’s nothing special and it’s certainly not some terrifying magnum opus of horror.

@@8bitminer The Chess Board was a huge metaphor used to describe the situation the main protagonist Noah was in. A member of The Administrator(Slenderman)'s Collective(proxies) named the Observer laid it out like a game. With black pieces being Slendy and his goons, and white pieces being humans trying to fight back. The concept pretty much got scrapped a third into the show and never elaborated on in specific detail, but it's enough to get the general idea.

I used to have an irrational fear of spiders but got over that after learning all about tarantulas. Got over my fear of heights by skydiving. there's one key detail you missed: the second monster is not the DOOM Guy trap or something, it's actually a second "EVIL." the second one is hidden in an inaccessible part of the map and from my understanding it is vital to most of the functionality of the map such as the timer that eventually causes the floor to move up, where to randomly place the orb objective object, and a few other things that i cant completely remember. iirc although its been a while since ive seen / played this map so take this with a grain of salt, but it also places a second thing that's invisible that it can see you through, and if this invisible thing sees you it will come right to you

Once woke up at night to go pee, afterwards on my way back to bed, I step over a box, no seeing my dog's chew toy behind it, which I step on, and then I slip and fall forward, almost down flat to the floor level, except that luckily my face breaks my fall on the doorframe. Most cheats are disabled on Nightmare. The only ones allowed I think are the level/music changing ones and IDDT, everything else will give you the prompt you saw. Other than that, it was interesting to see such an old mapset with some creepy stuff. Buen trabajo!

my greatest fear is the fear of deep underwater spaces. like, not just water, but deep under it's layer. i encountered this fear while playing a game "aground". at some point you will land on a planet that is 99% ocean. yes, you need to go really deep to find answers. this was insanely scary and disturbing, swimming in very dark spaces, where only 2 mobs were in there and knowing that if my submersible gets destroyed - i will die by insane pressure of the ocean. dark caves? nahh, that's easy. dark flooded caves? i'm out of here.

It's a cheap and disposable kind of horror. Spooky face chases you in the dark and kills you, but there's really nothing else to it, so the mileage is extremely short and you forget about it easily.

My greatest fear was Thalassophobia. I always was panicaly scared of deep oceans to the point of passing out seeing it in a video game, funnily enough video games helped me get over it, Valheim and Sea of Thieves made me progressively more curious about the depths and i just stopped fearing it that much. Of course if im stranded in the ocean and all i see is darkness below im sure to shit my pants.

Hey midnight i signed in just to tell you this. So when i was a kid i was also terrified of the dark. My parents would have me take the trash out at night and i would run to do it. I was always afraid of what i couldn't see in the dark alley. I thought there would be a man waiting to hurt me or even some monster in the bin waiting to pop out. Anyway i was able to get over it. First i would make myself sit in my room in all dark. Once i got comfortable with that i would go somewhere i felt safe. My grandparents cabin and i would go out in the dark and just sit there. After awhile i realized i wasn't really afraid of the dark i was afraid of the unknown. It took years of doing this till i had my realization and even linger till i concurred the fear completely. Now i can walk anywhere in the dark and not be afraid. It also helps to realize most people cant see in the dark and just as afraid. If its something you wanna change i hope this helps and more power to you.

My fear of the dark has changed throughout the years. When I was younger, anything that was dark enough that I couldnt see was a big no, over the years, I learned to dominate that fear, and just like you, I used to turn off all the lights and just sit there while I felt the creeps running through my back. Thanks to that, I learned that the darkness doesnt scare me, what does is feeling vulnerable while in the dark (showering, and sleeping). At my 26 years of age I still cant sleep without having a light on. Thank you for your comment!

Oh right, I never got around to playing that one because it's super demanding with GzDoom, it's the one where the monsters are all silent and are near invisible like spectres. Check out Lainos's other maps if you haven't, they don't have changed monsters like that, but a bunch of them are similar in how they're big and spooky rundown towns which you slowly explore.
