As a BYU fan, and having followed the team (as a student and alumni) year after year; I’m always bemused by TV commentators who marvel at “how BYU fans travel.” The first time I heard this was after attending the 1978 Tangerine Bowl in Orlando. What the TV commentators were not aware of at the time was that about 70% of the crowd were BYU fans and 20% were Oklahoma State fans with 10% neutral locals. The announcers were shocked that there was such a BYU fan turnout from a long distance in Utah. What they didn’t know was 3/4 of the BYU crowd were Floridians. Like Notre Dame, BYU doesn’t fill the stadiums with people from Provo, Utah; most are local to the game location. BYU’s fan base is a result from alumni being from all over the nation AND people being fans because they are LDS (or “Mormons”). This holds true for the preeminent Catholic university, Notre Dame. To a smaller extent, the armed service’s universities have this same unique feature.

I was a BYU alumni, but going to Law School in Oklahoma, so I drove to the game in Tucson. LOVED IT! Saw so many people I knew from both sides. John Walsh QB legend beat OU and Notre Dame this season. I wished he would have stayed one more year, but Mel Kaiper gassed him up and he declared. Walsh will always be one of my favorites.

Jamaal Willis #29 What a legend! This BYU team had so many stars Chad Lewis, Hema Heimuli, Evan Pilgrim, Kaipo McGuire, I can't even remember them all, but this team was loaded.

My family moved about 1.5 blocks from Owen Stadium the following fall after this game was played. I remember selling parking spots on my father's lawn to fans going to see Howard Schnellenberger's Sooner Team in ,1995, attending the very same school on a National Merit Scholarship 9 years later.

I don't think OU likes playing BYU!

Martin Hughes I'm pretty sure if we had played more than twice it would be a different story. Both wins against OU came during down seasons for them where they lost to a handful of teams they usually don't lose to. I would rather play BYU than most of the losers we schedule because at least you know BYU will be competitive.

Hate watching these old games and only intermittently seeing the score on the screen.

The NFL broadcasts had the score on the screen in 1994, but that involved wiring into the scoreboards which was a bit tricky at the time; they obviously hadn't done that at the University of Arizona stadium yet.

BYU poisoned OU's starting QB before this game. What a coincidence that only the starting QB got food poisoning and couldn't play.

Howard Schnellenberger turned out to be a big mistake for OU. Lasted one year at 5-5-1.

@@phav1832 I think he means why would this person who's an OU fan post this game because certainly OU fans would not want to watch this one. I think he posted it because it's an interesting game being Gibbs' last game. They fired him because of the depressing state they were in at this point playing in this depressing bowl but it would get worse before it would get better.
