1994 Ducati Supersport Starter/Engine Case Removal and Replacement

How to remove and replace the engine case and starter on a Ducati supersport. You can drape foil over your headers to stop the oil from hitting the pipe . Then just remove foil and discard

It uses a one way bearing . The spur is always engaged . The starters brushes are 100 percent serviceable your are probably 7 mm remaining .

Considering the Ducati, and pretty much every single other motorcycle, don’t have a bendix starter I’m extremely surprised that swapping starters actually worked. If the starter motor is spinning but your engine is not you most likely have a sprag clutch failure. And if it miraculously self healed, it will fail again.

also how did you rotate the gear to expose the other starter bolt? mine seems stuck

Did replacing the starter motor work? Sounds like you had a sprag clutch issue, i.e. starter spinning and engine not cranking. The starter pinion gear is always engaged with the sprag clutch jockey gear, it is not a Bendex type starter like you inferred, i.e. the starter gear does not move laterally, "extend out" it just spins. Also, you can replace the starter brush plate as opposed to the whole starter, but that's when the starter itself does not spin as opposed to the starter spinning bit engine not cranking as in your situation.

So replacing the starter motor worked for me. I personally decided to just replace the entire starter since no matter what I had to remove the starter and I didn't want to have to do this job a second time any time soon. Plus it all cost ~100 bucks.

Is there a gasket that sits between the starter and the inside of the engine? If so, did you replace that as well?

There actually isn't a gasket there, there's only the gasket for the engine case that needs to be replaced

Where you get the gasket from? For the oil casing?
