This video talks about the differences in the spark plug wires, coil, distributor cap between the 1994 Toyota 22RE pickup motor and the prior years 1989 to 1993 motors. It's a jungle out there...

Maybe this is better comment for on your other video, but do you know on the 94 what the wires do that go from the igniter back to the harness? Could you just run switched power to the igniter and get power to your plugs through the distributor? Could I run an MSD 6AL box or otherwise and have independent spark from ECU?
@ray5961
@ray5961 5 ай бұрын
The distributor (inside) is acting more like a magnetic trigger or crank fire ignition than anything like contact points. It sends a signal to the igniter to fire the coil. Which plug actually fires is handled by the cap / rotor contact point inside like a traditional distributor. I've never run the MSD 6AL box myself, but I believe you could use it by inputting the 22RE distributor trigger lead signal to the MSD box; you'd have to examine the wiring schematics for both, but if I had to do it that's how I would approach it. However, unless you are planning on getting 500+ HP from the 22RE, I think you can probably accomplish 8/10th the same thing by just installing the higher output MSD 8222 coil in place of the OEM coil and calling it a day (that's what I did out here for now). The Toyota ECU uses inputs to determine timing, etc.. so unless you run a full ECU (such as Haltech, Link, etc.) you are still going to be beholden to the Toyota mapping, even if you change to a different igniter box.

Hey Ray! I have a 1989 Toyota pick up naturally aspirated. I just did an air injection and egr delete. I also changed up some wires through out the harness. For some odd reason I’m missing 3 wires that come from the ECU and going to the igniter. I can’t locate those 3 wires going to the igniter to save my life. Wondering if I I can help me out. Maybe just a Pic of the wiring diagram to the igniter. Anything would help. Thanks

@@chefrobertcaldas I've never used the eastwood paint, so I couldn't tell you anything about it. I've tested the tractor paint against gas and solvents and it passed all my tests after curing. I basically painted a cup and left gas sitting in the cup for a few days.. didn't phase the paint whatsoever. But you may want to perform your own testing. BTW, just a heads up.. I'm packing my house and moving, so no longer able to do that U power steering stuff. All my tools are in storage now.

@ray5961 yah it came out great thats why i trust your opinion, and do i need a primer with it as well? And it lasts ! while once you open it right? As long as the hardener is separate? How much hardener do i need to.mix with it? And no worries ima keep the ps i just rebuilt it thx though
@ray5961
@ray5961 9 ай бұрын
@@chefrobertcaldas You mix the hardener using a 16:1 ratio (as outlined on the label for the hardener). Mix small batches (just enough to paint with); it will keep for a week or two if you seal it up in a glass jar without too much air (even if it's already mixed w/ the hardener). You don't need primer.. it's a paint designed for tractors basically. It is helpful to clean the surface and sand with 400 grit sandpaper and wipe it down with Acetone. Ideally, you want to cure the paint in the sun if you can. For individual parts, I cure the paint for 2 hours in the sun and/or fire it in the oven for 2 hours at around 200 to 250 degrees, depending on the part. Also, if you are painting aluminum, you want to out gas the part first using a torch or oven. Usually you need two coats (when using a brush to apply it) for full coverage. The first coat covers 90% and the second coat gives a nice finish over all. Cure each coat between painting if you can, but it's not totally required. The paint will tighten up as it dries and usually will remove any brush marks once dried. Finish should look top notch once it's all cured. It dries like a rock if you do it right and it totally resists gas and oil. Amazing paint. I bought the white paint for my buddy's truck via O'Reilly auto parts on line and it was delivered to the store the next day.

@@chaddickerson2369 if you have the square style one you'd have to solder in loop style connectors in order to bolt it down to the pins on the older style coil and the mounting bracket setup is different - so you have to figure out how to do all that. Either this video or the other recent one on the channel shows how we did it here.

What 2 wires go to the coil pos And neg? Dont orig coil have a plug?
@ray5961
@ray5961 5 ай бұрын
Toyota switched to a square coil in later model years... that square version still has two wires running to it (a positive and negative wire from the igniter). When doing this upgrade, you just transfer those same + and - wires over (black to negative and then tan cream color looking wire to +). Mostly the upgrade in this video is just so we could use the 8.5mm MSD wires, but the OEM square coil has a slightly different setup in the plug wire that runs from the coil to the distributor basically, so we swapped coils to the earlier style so we could also use the MSD 8222 coil there.

Runs a bit more smooth / crisp yes. I also run a slightly cut back ground strap on my spark plugs, which also helps when using this oil (i.e. larger spark).

If I want to use these wires do I need to use a different ignition coil?
@ray5961

As far as I know yes. I was wondering if MSD might have something which might plug into the stock 94/95 coil, but I haven't contacted them yet. We ended up just buying that 8222 coil instead.

@@davidross-oo2vh If I remember my research correctly, the MSD is about twice the voltage as the stock Toyota stuff. But I agree the OEM Toyota setup is plenty good. The main reason we decided to do this on his truck is because the old wires were in bad shape and wanted to go back to a setup closer to how the 89-93 trucks were done. The MSD wires are super nice also as far as how they snap on and off.

@@ray5961 MSD is mostly used on forced induction.. nitrous setups..One thing to keep in mind the MSD will have a longer duration spark and more intensity..On just a regular stock engine it will result in a hotter fire flame..or explosion..Also raising the combustion temperature in the cylinders..But hey..its a Toyota ..it can handle it

@@davidross-oo2vh Yeah.. I use the TA500 to measure spark duration, voltage, etc. Super handy. On my motor, I also was running the plugs with no ground strap; all the internals are ceramic coated, so I figured a bit more heat would cut down on piston slap in the morning :)
