Never get tired of watching a SD football team ten minute long drive! sucks #82 and #83 play in Denver! - Brian

This Charger team was built to play all 4 quarters and to outlast the opposing team near the end of having opposing players tired and beat up by 4th quarter. Bobby Ross conditioned this team in a militant manner as we fans saw these games now and then but we all knew the tempo was always to outlast the other. Every game opposing players were getting hurt and carted off the field due to the tough physical play thru out the games by Chargers. This game was truly one of the greatest if not thee greatest season opener game for Bolts due to WINNING CONVINCINGLY week in week out with no such luck drama of winning. Team had a couple of shutouts that year too ..

It was also a huge statement that we won IN DENVER, where we had not won in years. Mile High Stadium was one of the toughest places in the league to win, but the Chargers pulled it off that day and it set a tempo for the rest of the season.

@@jtstevenson81 Very accurate of the record at Mile High. We long time Charger fans REALLY MISS THE TEMPO of games as every game we always had a great day of watching, even the losses for it was luck for other team of winning vs Bolts. The last 10 years except Lynns 12 and 4 season( that year Lynn worked the players weekly but a few stars started to complain of the practices being not easy to be healthy as Lynn did get offended and just didnt care of his last season knowing a few players cry about practices) all the games the tempo is always Struggles and seeing players get tired by 3rd quarter. Until players buy in on working hard in practice, the team will be the same of tempo of games and JHerb the one keeping US to tune in due to his overall skills.

Perhaps it’s fitting The Chargers SB season was bookended by big plays: the pick 6 before halftime here vs Denver, the 43 yard game winning touchdown at Pittsburgh Heck don’t forget they got a 60 yard touchdown in the division clincher vs the Jets

That season was characterized by big plays. Interception returns for touchdowns of 73 and 99 yards by Stanley Richard, 99 yard touchdown pass by Stan Humphries, 90 yard kickoff return for touchdown by Andre Coleman, and punt return touchdowns of 75 and 90 yards by Darrien Gordon. Long plays were our calling card that year.

To put some perspective on how surprising it was that San Diego won: after the merger, the Chargers were 3-20-1 at Mile High Stadium from 1970-1993 going into this game

Yep. Denver was an absolute house of horrors for us. With Stan Humphries under center, we always felt like we had a chance to come back and win a game. He led the NFL in 4th quarter comebacks that year and had the third highest winning percentage among active quarterbacks during his five-year tenure with the Chargers.

It was early, and certainly nobody was predicting a Super Bowl, but this was where you first got the idea that this season would be different for the Chargers. Denver was an AFC favorite going into the season and this game was seen as little more than a national TV showcase for the Broncos against token opposition. It looked that way early but San Diego flipped the script and won the game, setting the tone for both teams in 1994.

I never felt like we were out of a game as long as we had Stan Humphries under center. He never put up great stats, but he just had a knack for winning. He was among the top 5 QB's in the league in winning percentage and 4th quarter comebacks for the time period that he played.

Really have to wonder how different history is if Denver wins this game. If they go 1-0 do they have the confidence to win in NY the following week. I mean they started 0-4 and that was too big a hole to dig out from. Basically if they have a good season does Wade Phillips get fired leading to Mike Shanahan getting the head coaching job.
