How strange lmao. I recognized the room you were in and had to make sure. Used to watch you years ago mod consoles and learned a lot about soldering from you and here I am today learning how to coolant flush from you.
@Mfury0013 жыл бұрын
Use a rad flush additive, they are cheap and it breaks down the scaling in the radiator and engine block that builds up over time. Just running straight water does little except flush out loose scaling and not the stuff stuck to the metals inside. If using straight water don't leave it in for long since it will cause corrosion inside the radiator since there are no corrosion deterrent additives in straight water. Use distilled water and antifreeze concentrate when refilling. Also best to not drain antifreeze into the lawn or drain.

Every fall, I backflush the heater core on both of my trucks. I unhook the heater lines from the engine side, blow the coolant out (in the reverse direction) with an air line. Fill with radiator flush, let it sit for a couple hours, blow it out again, then I do the same thing with boiling hot water 3 or 4 times. I always get so much crap out of it, brown goo and coffee grinds, even though the coolant in the radiator looks brand new. Before I started doing this, I wouldn't get good heat until it was running at operating temp for at least 5 minutes, but now, it gets warm as soon as the temp needle comes off the stop, and gets hot soon after.

Flush with water only unless it is crusty. Everytime I flushed my system with Dupont Radiator Flush, my water pump started leaking. Before it was OK. After the flush it leaked. This happened three times over the years. I never flush with a chemical anymore. If you keep your system clean and full of fresh anti freeze you never have to flush in the first place. If your truck isn't getting hot just flush w/ water if you want to clean it. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I agree... i flushed my Blazer with the chemical Cleaner and about a week later the water pump was leaking at the little hole by the shaft, because the cleaner cleaned all the grawdo from the water pump bearing. Good that you clean the system but distilled water is the only water that should be used. The minerals in tap water contaminate the cooling system and can created scale on the inside of the water jacket. The last flush should be distilled water and flush chemicals then use a 50/50 or 70/30 mix 70 coolant 30 distilled water if you live in a really cold climate like me. Pure coolant will still freeze the distilled water helps with the heat containment and transfer of heat better and is why some truck heating systems work better than others, it the differance in mix percentages of coolant and distilled water. 60/40 works well for where i live in the north in a 1992 suburban with a 350 CID 5.7L witha 4 core radiator. Some of the newer GMC, Chev trucks have a problem with the Intake gaskets leaking coolant into the oil pan due to corrosion of the gaskets by the pink coolants that GMC started using and they need to be changed and the Green coolant needs to be used which doesn't corrode the gaskets some gasket for this reason have been upgraded to a steel and rubber type. If you have a newer GM car or truck and your rad coolant looks really brown or dirty do a oil change and see if the oil has any coolant in it. this will be a early warning sign that your engine will need a intake gasket. Your dirty water looks like a motor oil that is being pushed in the the water jacket by the compression of the piston pressures like blow bi.

Why bother gutting it? Just leave it out and reuse the old gasket. Who cares if it leaks a small amount. When I did mine and reused the old gasket, it did not look in good shape, but didn't leak anyway. Just before putting in coolant, I put in the thermostat and new gasket.

I have a question sir, So you mention the pump being replaced. Was this before or after this process I ask because i thought the engine sucked coolant into the engine from the thermostat part. This video makes me think the pump is actually sucking the coolant out of the radiator and into the engine from the lower radiator hose. I guess im confused, does the water pump only come on when the thermostat opens? Doesnt seem like they would talk to eachother... is it when it notices loss of preassure by the thermostat opening that jt kicks on and pushes it in to the block? Hope my questions make sense. Thanks in advance.
@brandon2633 жыл бұрын
Because the thermostat controls how much coolant goes thru and with it cold…. It will be closed so in order to flush the heater core at the same time u need the thermostat wide open just for the flush
@chuckd74232 жыл бұрын
This question is 10 months old, but since I didn't see an answer to your query, I though I'd give it a shot. The water pump on these trucks is mechanical and runs off the serpentine belt anytime the engine is running, regardless of whether the thermostat is open or closed. The pump is an integral part of the serpentine belt arrangement, and has to be in place in order to route the belt over other components that are also part of the serpentine belt arrangement, including such things as the alternator, power steering pump, and A/C compressor, as well as idler pulleys to allow tension and adjustment of the belt. The purpose of the thermostat is to stay closed and prevent coolant in the engine from circulating through the radiator until the coolant reaches a certain temperature, typically 180 degrees. This allows the heater to warm up faster than if the coolant was circulating through the radiator. There is also less wear and tear on an engine when it comes up to operating temperature, so it's in the interest of engine longevity to allow the coolant to warm up as fast as possible. When the thermostat opens, it allows heated coolant from the engine block to pass through the upper radiator hose, to the upper radiator inlet, and through the radiator for cooling, and is then sucked out through the lower radiator hose by the water pump, where the coolant is then circulated throughout the engine, and then constantly repeats the engine/radiator circulation cycle.

Thermostat opens to flow to radiator after it hits a certain temp, if you remove it it'll flow to the radiator without needing to get the temp up too much, just making flushing and swapping out fluids easier and quicker since you dont have to wait for it to hit molten temps to start flowing 👍 if its left out your engine takes longer to get up to operating temp which can lead to poor fuel efficiency

Your 350 Vortex is laid out different than my 97 Express van. I need to flush not only the engine and rad but the rear heater. Do you know it the heater hose behind the alternator is where I need to put a flush tee? I can't tell if this is the hose coming off the water pump. Everything is so buried and hard to see in this van. I was also going to force air (like 5 lbs) through this tee since I have no idea how to drain the rear heater. The Haynes manual says this van takes 20 quarts of coolant! Once I Purge the system I can add 10 quarts of antifreeze then 10 quarts of water through one of those Lyle funnels with the engine running.

The thermostat only opens at operating temperature. If you don't do this the system won't stay wide open during flushing below 160f (or whatever the particular therm is set at). They're $8 at any autoparts store -- you'll have a better time if you gut one, or if your seal isn't integral to the thermostat housing, just remove it
@theodorebridgman14013 жыл бұрын
@@fallenone6 ....so I'm glad you're asking this, but tbh I'm not sure if you're trolling me or not. Yeah removing will be OK as long as your gooseneck still seals properly to your block. Distilled water just reduces potential corrosion which is a moot point when it's just flushing out gunk-filled old water anyhow. On a new vehicle with a clean engine there's a case for distilled, but at the vehicle age where water looks as it does in the video it's a different case. Highly recommend you read the Haynes/Chilton manual for your specific car before you move on. It seems like you're lacking some basic concepts (not a bad place to start but it's where you are) and that can be dangerous
