I remembered watching this as a kid and thinking the score was much closer, memory is a funny thing. It took another 23 years after this until Australia beat the USA but the ground work laid by the Aussie guys in this in this game is the reason more and more Aussies play in the NBA and the reason the Boomers finally won in 2019.

Not true, Penny Hardaway isn't in the HOF yet. He may get there, but as of this post he only was only recently nominated for the first time this year (2024). It's too bad injuries shortened his career or else he would have been a no doubter.

John played about 35 minutes a game at this point in his career because of all his injuries. You can’t tell he was hurt but Malone used to wince some days just watching John go out there knowing he was in pain but he NEVER complained.

You had to give the Aussies due credit. They were outclassed in every meaningful aspect of the game, but they didn't surrender to the superior squad. Trying to get physical with Sir Charles or the Mailman were huge mistakes.

I think it was the other way round. Commentators were a bit late on the action. US with Malone especially were trying to intimidate Aus and throwing arms and elbows the whole time. When it actually connected then the Aussies started to fight back

Australia was let down by basic skill errors too often, such as bounce passes to feet and wide open jumpers that missed. Fisher in particular looked like he was sleep walking on the court. Incredible shooting by Heal though, and that lob pass by Gaze to McKinnon was sweet, as was McKinnon's finish.
