the fault lies with the NBA, they sacrificed defense and some rules of this sport for a show more focused on attack and performance. And yet I find that the matches now are much more boring to watch than the matches of the 80s/90s, there are not only bad sides, for example Lebron surely would not have had such a long career if he had played at that time. The game is evolving but not necessarily in the right direction, hence the misery of current all-star games

I don't even think anyone says that. The NBA just likes to perpetuate that kind of play to bring in fans that don't watch basketball at all. Brand new fans. They've started to allow defense now and not just blowing the whistle at the slightest contact. I think they realized that there's no point in getting fickle new fans when they're losing their old fans. The All-star game, on the other hand, is a shit-show because players aren't willing to injure themselves or even exert effort for a game that doesn't matter at all. They see the all-star game as a vacation. The NBA can fix it by putting actual stakes on it. Like giving the winning side homecourt advantage in the finals. Similar to what the MLB does.

@@Seattlefan77You'd be surprised at the number of FANs saying that. A fan of the new era of the NBA once argued against my point and said isn't that the point of the game? To score more? The team that scores more wins? And claimed I was dumb to want defense as that would defeat the purpose of the game. 🤦 Then I argued it is more satisfying to see a player make a contested shot over tough defense. Not all fans but some new fans no longer appreciate the competition between offense and defense. For them the competition is about who shoots more (basically uncontested shootout). Again not all but you'd be surprised at how many wants a shootout.

I've watched two minutes and seen more effort and serious ball than the last 5 all-star games combined. I absolutely love watching 80's and 90's games and actually seeing such little space between the ball and defenders. Wherever the ball goes, there's a defender right there. What happened to this league!?

Well i watched 2 minutes and saw 4 missed layups, an airball by MJ, an airball and a pass into the stands by Bird. But yes, I do see that they actually kinda give a fuck. Theres 2 things very noticeable though. The first is that the refs are officiating this like a real game. They are just as relaxed and lenient in todays ASG. Another is the 3's. Obvious I know. But it perfectly explains your last point. Theres a fuckload of space in todays game. Its almost impossible to guard the 3 at times. In this game, its all midrange and paint play. I saw 2 missed 3's in 6 minutes and thats it. Im sure if they were all shooters as they are now, it would look nearly identical.

I watched a good portion of the 1993 All Star game a couple months back, and had forgotten just how competitive the NBA was back then. We didn't realize how good we had it back then. Thanks for posting.

You can say what you want about players today, but the all star game of the NBA is going the same way as the NFL pro bowl went. Ergo: Players not playing hard, and the experience of watching the game suffers because of it. You could look at the scores and say that the all star games have always been higher scoring than the average of the time they are in. And while the NBA has a lot of talented shooters, it’s tough to say that defensive effort was there when one team scored 200+ points in a regulation game.

Just my immediate reflections when comparing to the game nowadays: * The amount of mutual respect the players show each other. * The complete lack of irrelevant statistics. *The number of dribbles the players do. *The creativity the players has to get the shots off. *How fluent the game is. Much fewer stops. *The intensity of the defense (despite being an all-star game). *Most fouls are obvious. * The idea of singing the national anthem as weird as possible apparently goes further back than I thought.

Lambeer was one of the top rebounders and open-midrange shooters in the NBA during most of his career. He ws putting up better numbers in his last 2 yrs of his career than many "prime" aged centers (mind-90's). On one hand, that's how good Lambeer really was. On the other hand, that's how soft/weak the NBA had become by the mid-90's. @@natetran Your response saddens me because it shows how uninformed public is about what catastrophic thing is happening. Due to plastic and other chemical pollution each generation has less and less testosterone and repruductive ability. Your son if things continue as they are will have much lower baseline genetic level of testosterone and he will struggle because of it as do many many young men today and will have to go on TRT just to be normal. This isnt about upbringing its about pollution and its everywhere suppressing our genes. I will end here because the rest is up to you if you want to find out about this.

Seeing this is really an eye opener, I'd rather see the best players actually play real basketball than see them shoot open threes and leave the paint open so that there's opportunity for flashy dunks. In every aspect this is a soft league. I don't care if people say stuff about him, in my opinion, whatever had remained from the NBA died when Kobe retired.
