Yankee fan here.....This series was alot closer and hard fought than I remember. Late inning comebacks. Plays at the plate. Texas not going down easy. Cecil Feilder was a crucial bat all postseason....even just as a rent a player. All I remember was Gonzo and Bernie hitting a shitload of HRs. Also, it shows me how much luck is a part of winning

Yeah this was a really entertaining series. Juan Gonzalez was my favorite player as a kid, those 90s Rangers teams with Pudge/Juan were everything. Credit to NY, they showed their dynastic chops from game 2 on.

3:20 Juan Gonzalez was always my favorite yankee killer because despite owning us practically every at bat none of it ever mattered in the end.

It's easy to forget that the '90s Yankee dynasty almost never even got off the ground. Texas led in every game, and led by 3+ runs in three of the four games. They probably outplayed the Yankees for the majority of the series but their bullpen was just atrocious and lost every game in the late innings.

I believe had the Rangers won, they likely would have been the one facing the Braves in the WS.

"Well, George Steinbrenner better check the deeds, because these days, It's Juan Gonzalez who owns the New York Yankees." - Bob Costas What Ken Griffey and Edgar Martinez did to the Yankees the year before, Juan Gonzalez seemed determined to follow suit in the 1996 ALDS. In Game 1 at the Bronx, Gonzo took David Cone deep with two in the 4th to go ahead. The Rangers took Game 1, 6-2. The next night, Juan, who hit 7 home runs against the Yanks in 10 games in the regular season, went deep twice to put Texas ahead, 4-1. But thanks to Cecil FIelder, the Yankees scratched their way back to tie the game in the 8th, and then Jeter scored the game winner on a 12th inning error for a 5-4 Yankees' win, and a split of the first two games. In the first ever playoff game in the Dallas-Ft. Worth/Arlington area, the Rangers looked to win their 6th game against the Yanks at home against one loss, leading 2-1 in the 9th, Gonzo's 4th HR of the series a key hit. Until the Yanks rallied for two in the 9th to win, 3-2. Mariano Duncan's single scoring the game winner. The next afternoon, the Rangers jumped on former teammate Kenny Rogers for a 4-0 lead after three (Juan belting his 5th HR). No problem for the Yankees, though. Bernie Williams went deep twice and the Yanks rallied to win, 6-4 and take the series, 3 games to 1. What it came down to was that the Rangers' bullpen was their Achilles' heel. And the Yanks' pen was their strength. John Wetteland saved both games in Texas, and the Yanks would now meet the Orioles one more time...this time, in the ALCS.

And then the Rangers poached Wetteland for the rest of the 90s. Leading the Yanks to promote a guy by the name of Mariano Rivera to closer....

I know the Yanks owned the Rangers in '98 and '99 ALDS Series, BUT if they had a decent bullpen in '96 the Yankees dynasty would've been delayed at least a year.

It’s not like the Ranger starting rotation was THAT bad.

Not to mention they were a bigger threat to the Yankees than the Orioles were, even had the edge against them in head to head during that regular season.

@@iamhungey12345having the better record against a team you’re going to play in the regular season doesn’t mean anything. Example Yankees went undefeated against the Cleveland Indians of the regular season in 2007 only for them to lose in 4 games to them.

@@Mr.Jtea3 Plus it doesn't factor into what the team does at the trade deadline. Not to mention players does performs differently in the postseason. Not that the Orioles fans should get the wrong idea regarding 1996 however... That said you somewhat missed the point of what I was saying.
