I’ve had quite a few 993s, 996s, a variety of other Italian and British sports cars besides. But if I had to name the most special car I’ve ever owned, it was a pristine, ultra low mileage 993 TT X50 that I ran for a year in 2005. Jesus… what a perfect car. That factory X50 kit gave the car 450bhp and to be honest, that felt a bit of an understatement. The car was savagely, brutally fast and yet utterly manageable, comfortable on long distances but fantastically tactile on the twisties. I lived in Germany at the time so really got to exercise the car and on one memorable late night trip back from Paris, I had the chance to wind it past 320kmh on the clock, at which point the aerodynamic forces on the car lifted the sunroof slightly up from its seals and the sudden, unexpected blast of wind noise made me think I was dead. Overtaking in that thing never, ever got old. What. A. Rush. I’d have another one tomorrow but don’t think I’d ever find one as nice as the one I had and if I did, it would now cost eleventy billion pounds.

So “a variety of mid engined” Porsches meant you had Carrera GTs, and 918s??? I’ve been fortunate enough to drive a 993 turbo on several occasions and it is a car that needs to be respected. The turbos spool in a pretty linear fashion and the gain in speed, which at first seems somewhat unassuming, builds monstrously fast and you can get yourself in trouble quickly if you’re not careful. Driving this car hard leaves you with a very nice adrenaline rush when you exit the car. Sort of like patting a lion on the head and realizing after the fact that it could have ripped your arm off if it wanted too. 😅
@humzai98852 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean. I had the pleasure of having a 997.1 Turbo for the weekend and it's tame until it isn't. Even with the AWD it's a car you have to respect and know when you can and can't give it throttle because the rear can step out quite easily and deliver a tank slapper

I still take it over today's driver assisted sports cars. Listen to that rev matching, that my friend its pure symphonic pleasure and the handling makes even the hardened scrooge smile without withdraw. Porsches are just so sublime, easy to drive and just the machine to turn back the middle life crises. I love those 90's Porsches, as you can see the thrill hasn't gone anywhere and the built quality its second to none. No Ferrari can't never match the Porsche quality, those Germans really have engineering down pat. No other exotic for me, as you said it can be a car for all occasions, for the track, to go to work as a daily driver, go out on the town for a nice dinner... The versatility its everlasting and so its the fun, along with that Porsche Quality. 🇩🇪👍

FYI, 993 AWD system wasn't derived from the 959 (Porsche-Steuer Kupplung (PSK) - mutli-plate clutch system) and it's simply a viscous coupling system. The 964 Carrera 4 (Turbo didn't get AWD at the time) was the one with a simplified 959 AWD system which worked horribly and that's why Porsche went with the viscous clutch on the 993 (the same with 996 AWD models and 997.1 non-turbo AWD models). The 959 AWD design re-emerges in the 997.1 Turbo and subsequently on every new AWD models (997.2 and onward).

993 is my favourite 911 model - the last air cooled 911, but the first with a more modern suspension design. A lot of the throttle stuff could probably be fixed with a remap, or perhaps there is an aftermarket part that could improve the response in a less disconnected way.

I got to drive one. Now I took high performance courses in my 2011 Mustang, so 5.0L Manual 400hp Brembos LSD Solid Axle. I recall trying to drive it like my Mustang and it did not like it. The front end got light and it started to understeer. Really felt like the car was all mechanical and i was fighting the car, and loosing. My Mustang I don't feel like I'm fighting it, feels more like I'm strong arming it into doing what I want and it does it, right up until it looses all grip and then its all over the place and a bear to catch. I also did not like the floor mounted pedals. I had the same issue you had with the throttle. But I found the clutch to be heavy and the bite point awkward. It may have been an aftermarket clutch because this also had aftermarket coil overs and intercooler. Power was good, and I liked how the turbos built boost, it didn't hit all at once. Gearing felt similar to my Mustang (which has rhe 3.73). First would go to 50-60km/h, 2nd to 100km/h, third to 150km/h. It was definitely a unique experience.
