Good Video ! ive got a 99 cummins 24 v. ive become an almost expert at Starter replacement on the Ground. 14 minutes out time and 17 minutes install. done it twice.

get you some heavy duty contacts for the starter solenoid and you won't have to replace your starter again.

The title should be corrected. The crank sensor was only present for 98-00, 01/02 did away with it and put a plug in the block. For 01/02 they used the sensor in the injector pump and only the cam sensor in the engine.

THEFERMANATOR, I bought a 1999 Dodge Ram 3500 24 valve cummins with a bad motor( a fixer upper) and I was told that from mid 98 to 2002 any 24 valve cummins would be a direct fit, so I found a 2002 cummins for a fair price and bought it, but once the motor was installed there was no crank tone ring and sensor to plug the wire harness to. Had to remove the engine and buy another one, now knowing the crank position sensor is only present on 98.5 until 2000 so I bought a 2000 24 valve and there is NO crank sensor either! I used a different mechanic to install the second engine and the jerk have the engine bolted and ready to fire up when he called me to say there is no tone ring on the block to plug the crank sensor wire harness to the actual crank sensor. In the place of the sensor there is a metal cap with a bolt covering the location of the crank sensor. I spent 2 grand on each engine and now i am stuck with this truck with an engine that doesn't match my computer. The second engine( year 2000) came complete with the wire harness also which was installed along with the engine but my ECU/PCM is still original from the 1999 cummins. I checked the metal plate on the timing cover and it says the engine is indeed a 2000, so how come there is no crank sensor on it?

Can my 1999 computer be reflashed / reprogrammed to work on an engine without the crank sensor? I also have another ECU from a 2002 Cummins but not sure if by swapping the computers my problems will be solved.

I drove through some high water and my engine light kicked on haven’t checked the codes yet, but my rpm gauges stopped working then my truck kinda stalled out wouldn’t brake turn on go, and i shut it off started back it up and it ran fine. I’m suspecting this is it what do you think?

Chris from Everson Transmission, Ive got a P1690 on a 99 Cummins 3500 and also a weird no communication with ECM and a 3-4 and lockup hunt. No crank sensor signal code and also no drop outs on the dash. Any insight? thx for the Video

Make sure you put a little blue lock tite on the starter bolts they will vibrate out if you don’t …

Access to the starter and sensor is limited and a bit challenging. Took off wheel and inner fender to gain a little better access. Old sensor is stuck tight so I soaked a rag in PB and left it against the sensor overnight. Wish me luck!

Bigman0r2016 The most common item is the rear ABS speed sensor on the rear diff. To be sure however I recommend having the codes checked.

That was the factory scanner DRB3. Is pricey and getting harder to come by....around $2000-$3000 for a used one.

It can but each time I had an issue with one.....it set a code. When it comes to a diesel......checking the fuel system is the place to start especially on the older trucks with the liftpumps

I need to do this, I have the crack positioning sensor code and my tac will drop off as well, but the engine will just shut off after about a minute of idling is this something that can be related to this sensor?

Its a possible cause. I have seen a few do about the same issue.

MotorCity Mechanic thanks for your reply I've looked into it more since my post and have determined that it's my cam position sensor, being that my truck is an 02 from my understanding 02 doesn't have the crank sensor just the cam sensor same thing just different location

MotorCity Mechanic finally got around to changing out that cam sensor last week and that fixed everything it's like a new truck, load off my mind it was running bad thought I had a bigger problem

Throttle Position Sensor that is the problem I already fix mine 👍. put it in the same way how it is installed and then you step on the pedal 3 times all the way very slowly. But you have to do this before ; Disconnect de battery, before removing the old sensor and then connect battery after put the New sensor.
