1998 Volvo V70 Tensioner and belt replacement (without special tool)

Mobile service in cold, dark night in this video...the 1998 Volvo V70 inline 5 cylinder non turbo had the belt tensioner seize up. I replace the tensioner and serpentine belt without the special Volvo tool. I use a 1/2 inch breaker bar with a 1/2 to 3/4 adapter on it instead and break off a drill bit to hold it in place during installation.

Thank you for continuing to watch and the nice comment. You clearly understand you have to push through and get the job done, even if it's not the most pleasant circumstances. In this case, I know the owners were happy to not be without a car any longer and saved them $ on towing, etc. And they call on me in the future, so it's a win-win really. I've lived in the Midwest or Alaska for all but 11 of my 66yrs. Needless to say, I've wrenched on more 'hockey boxes' in the cold than I care to admit (more like remember). KUDOS for Hanging In There Man!! I'm currently wrenching on a '98 xc70 (fortunately in a heated garage), struts, tie rod ends, timing & accessory belts, lower control arms, rear brakes & line. If you run accross that damn tensioner & pin/drill bit system again...just use you breaker bar setup to take some pressure off the bit & it'll come out easily. Nope! I'm not a genius! I just stumbled accross that tidbit of info earlier today while figuring this thing out! Actually I was going to try to reinstall the new belt by just using a similar tension release tool & feed the bet around. Have seen several 'motorheads' using some sort of pin & it looks alot easier.

this is why you dont let non volvo people (people who don't know these cars not just the dealer) work on volvos….this takes less then 10 mins to do ...ive done a few.no special tools a nail and socket insert ..them rollers in the timing belt area were getting ready to let go as well. you can hear them... at 190K these are $300 -$500 cars (to buy from some body)as to fix them right the deal wants around 3-4 grand ...OR ..to do with parts FROM (FCP) maybe 8 or 9 hundred/// ..these cars are like HOTT chicks ...need a lot of attention and constant care/ upkeep ..if not they pop their tops and are DONE !!

03/01/2021 Brandon: Your 1/2" to 3/4" adapter saved me guess work but the no room for big hands remains. And the inventor of metric tools, i'd like to pee on his grave. Never owned any until i inherited this piece of trash V70. I laughed uncontrollably at the environment lighting & temperature, because you experienced the misery that i'm about to enjoy. Except it's warmer. 40° and raining sideways. No garage. Thanks for suffering. The video absolutely helped. In Oregon.
