Thanks for the video, going over the top of the fuel tank for the left rear shock replacement saved me a lot of time. Thanks for the tip.

You're a funny guy. I enjoy watching your videos. And yes, I have sneezed while brushing my teeth. Toothpaste went all over the mirror and sink. Pain in the rear to clean it all up.

i've found that ALOT less headaches will be had, by simply not going to autozone to begin with. they are the absolute bottom of the barrel for a large chain automotive parts store. But! thank you for your video! this is the first channel i go to if i have a question on my expedition.

Thanks! This is the only video out there covering the rear shocks on this model. An hour-long video for only four bolts is a bit much, maybe coulda done with just the edited highlights. :) But hey super entertaining and I learned some tricks. Thanks again.

I succeeded in changing my rear 2001 Expo shocks, thanks for your help. A suggestion: remove the spare tire, this provides a lot of useful room for changing the left rear shock. Also, I had to grind a couple of mm off of the mounting points because they were too wide to fit into the car's brackets. They would not fit at all until this was done.

My moms 1999 expedition only has coils but no shocks, do I replace the coils with shocks or what ?

2000 navigator is the same set up. It spent 16 years in New York, so it is rusted to hell. A cordless impact wrench makes this job a whole lot easier. The clip the bolt goes into at the top is called a U nut. I know this because I had to order two new ones.

Thanks so much for posting this. One question for you, when you tighten the bolts on the new shocks do you tighten to a specific torque value (i.e. 30 ft. lbs.) or do you just tighten as tight as possible? I have ordered new Monroe shocks for my 1999 Expy and plan on changing them this weekend. Thanks again!
@OnlineAutoRepairVideos7 жыл бұрын
Hi Joseph, that is a question you will get many different answers for depending on who you ask. A person such as myself who has been in this field for a while, knows when to stop tightening, a person who is kind of new must go by torque. Use a 3/8 ratchet and tighten the nuts and bolts until they are snug, then tighten them another 20 degrees. If you are not comfortable with that, tighten until it stops using one hand. I do not want to tell you to tighten as tight as possible because I don't know your strength. For all I know you just might tighten them up and break the bolts, lol. I hope this helps you out.

Good video. This is is on today's menu. I went to Harbor Freight awhile back and the small inexpensive torque wrench is very smaller jobs.. The other one is a lot more. What I did was get the huge pry bar with socket and bought a electronic one torque reader for about 30 dollars. all told about 50 or so dollars. The prybar has come in handy ..great for taking off lug bolts. I like snug and about 20 degrees...now is that farenheight or celcius..lol..As a newbie at this job. I'll probably take the easy one off first, do that one and then go to the other. I like the idea of not taking the tires off.. much safer.in my opinion. I'll make sure to turn off the air brake power assist. I have 3 different books.. I'll probably use Chilton's. When it comes to safety..I overkill.. I use four jack stands. I have an older set which is better quality than the ones they put out now. in addition I have 6 Jack's. I won'tt use them. all.

What monroe shocks did you use? The monroe OE spectrum, or the monroe Reflex. Because I noticed in another comment that the monro-matic plus, (the blue ones) are cheaply made.
@OnlineAutoRepairVideos5 жыл бұрын
The gas-matic, and YES, the blue ones are cheaply made, so STAY AWAY from them!!

Great job, if your in NY I have a friend with a 98 Ford Expedition EB model that needs the front and rear shocks changed also. Which shocks would you recommend Monroe or Belstein?

We're actually in NC. We have used Monroe, just make sure you don't get the blue ones, those are very cheaply made.

Why do the old shocks look larger in diameter than the new ones? Heavier duty? Thanks for the video, I will be doing this on my Expo.
@OnlineAutoRepairVideos7 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeffrey, not sure why. but then again, the old ones are factory, or maybe it's because they are stretched out from being on there since 1999.
