1999 Ford F350 New Headlights, SPYDER LED Headlight Install
If there is anything to dislike about an old Ford pickup, it's the faded old headlights. I'm not usually one to spiff up a truck to make it look like a toy, but if I'm going to make a repair I may as well upgrade if possible. I had the option to replace my lights with new OEM replacements, but why would I?
I picked these up through JC Whitney. They look pretty sharp. The install was mostly painless except for the usual frustrations of trying to pull out something that's been in place for nearly 20 years. Removing the batteries is a big help to have space to work in behind the headlights.
In general the install was very easy. Not quite a full plug and play. For the main headlights, the factory plug worked. The marker/directional fits in as well and uses factory bulb. For the LED and halo rings you have to splice into marker power feed, but that's easy enough.
My biggest frustration was the lack of directions from SPYDER. They have plenty of videos online, which is their only saving grace. The included directions with the lights flat out suck. Also I saw no mention on any of the videos that I may have to cut my factory headlight bracket to allow these to fit. I tried like crazy to set them in place, and it just wasn't happening without the cuts I made. But once I figured out what to trim out, then the lights set in very nice.
Driving to work in the dark was a world of difference and the truck looks amazing!

Great video, man, thank you for putting this out! The install doesn't seem too bad from what I've seen, just requires patience like anything automotive related. It bothers me to no end that companies can't make an aftermarket headlight assembly that simply fits into the existing housing.

Yes it seems they over complicated the design. Likely trying to get more of a universal shape that fits more models.

Good to hear the bulbs can be upgraded. I actually have one burned out right now, and I've been putting off the repair because I have to take the fixture out to pull the bulb to see what kind I need. Can't just walk in the store and say "it's a 99 f350" anymore. But yeah, while I'm at it, might just update both bulbs. Do you recall what you upgraded too, and if so would you mind sharing? How's the performance now?

Dieselmxtt did you have to hard wire them or did they actually plug in? Also I was thinking, my truck had daytime running lights, as just the markers. Then once I turn the headlights on I get low beam and high beam. My halos come on with my low beams. I think it would look better if my halos were on as the running lights. I don't recall from original wiring but I think I can do it. What do you think?
@dieselmxtt
@dieselmxtt 7 жыл бұрын
Tom Brueggen i did hard wire them. on mine the 3 mini lights on the side, lower orange light and halos come on as parking lights. i always drive with parking lights on. low beam and high beam on mine do not come on at the same time. i have to choose to run either high beams or low beams. not sure if thats the new bulbs or just the way those lights are setup. when you hardwire them you can change the wires around to what you want to run during the day. i noticed the halos are really weak. barely see them on during the day. i havnt had a chance to figure oit how the make them brighter bacuse i couldnt find a bulb to pull out.
@TomBrueggen
@TomBrueggen 7 жыл бұрын
Let me clarify, low and high beam don't come on at the same time. I'm saying my daytime running lights (DRL) are only my parking lights, not the halos and small LED. I think it would look better if the accent lights (halo and little LED) were on as the DRL. Then when I manually turn on park lights, I'd get the RH main bulb as the park light, and all my cab lights and tail lights would come on. Then turning the dial to full headlight would get me the low beam/high beam option. I was re-watching my own video last night trying to see if this was an option on how I wired it up. I just think it would be a better look. As is, my halos and LED's come on with the park lights, and then they get kind of hidden by the park light bulb.

Interesting. I'd have to look closer. It doesn't bother me, and it seems to light up just fine. But if I pull up to a wall I can see they are a bit out. I don't think it's so bad as to cause issues with blinding oncoming traffic. It's as if the the projection is rotated slightly, so what should be a level square is just at a bit of a tilt, not like the whole thing is angled up.

Tom Brueggen Run a wire from your power accesory source(12 volts comes on only when ignition is on) either under the hood fuse box or somewhere else...I would fuse it off that power source and even wire it into a switch on the dash so if you're in a parking lot idling and don't want to stick out with the Halos running. The diode should act as like a check valve for electricity only allows current to flow one direction...so 2 pieces of wire, diode and 2 quick connectors and 5 minutes should be all you need to make it so when you flip high beams on both headlights come on...I'll see if I can't find a link to a diode

I’m not sure what you’re talking about? The long adjustment bolts? I’m thinking those just have a tiny hex head, like 6 mm or something

Might have to. Just noticed this morning one of the bulbs is going out again. It's the same one I recently made a video about changing when it burned out last time. Seems almost like it's loose now, like it flickers on and off.

Man, I don't recall for sure on those. They were 35's I think? I want to say like 325/75 R18, can't recall exactly. But the 325 was the problem, so wide they were rubbing the leaf springs in the front. So I stepped down to a smaller width, but unfortunately that also meant a bit smaller height since it's a ratio of width. I think now I'm running something like 285/75 or something. I gained 1-2 mpg though!

I don't know. You'd have to check with vendor. I bought them through JC Whitney, so maybe it would say. Or maybe you can contact Spyder directly.

How have the halo rings held up
@TomBrueggen
@TomBrueggen 6 жыл бұрын
samuel Allen no issues so far in over a year and a half. Only had to replace one bulb so far, but it was one of the primary bulbs for low beams, not a halo. All LED’s are fine.

@TomBrueggen

samuel Allen H1. I actually have a video of replacing the bulb that went out but I haven’t got it uploaded yet. I upgraded the original bulbs with Silvania silver stars or something like that. Brightest ones I could get.

Does anyone know how to convert the H1 bulbs in the Spyder lights to LED? There has to be a way, and I don't want to do it first :)

Either on this video, or my video about replacing the H1 bulbs, I think a fella commented with tips on how he did his truck. It can be done for sure.

Michael Chovan I cant find it either. It may have been a personal message he sent me or something, I really don’t recall. I know what you want to do is easy enough, and not uncommon. I just don’t know exactly how. Just had a mechanic working on my truck the other day. He upfitted his headlights also, and had a plug and play LED upgrade that fit the factory bulb socket. Just had to match a few wiring harnesses

@@TomBrueggen -- Thanks for the reply. I couldn't find anything online related to converting this headlamp to a LED-based "bulb". I ended up buying some LED H1 equivalent bulbs on Amazon and I have them wired in on the low beams. I did have to cut away metal to allow the LED's to fit (and delete material from the rubber grommets that cover the "stock" bulbs to allow the LEDs to protrude), but the low beams are now phenomenal. I have a second set ordered for the high beams.

Installing these is a huge pain in the butt . Not to mention, when you have to replace a bulb , pull it all out and readjust everything again . Not worth the 12 hours we spent installing them .
@TomBrueggen
@TomBrueggen 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah they’re not what I really wanted either. I wanted brighter headlights, but the old H1’s just don’t compete with newer LED’s. I like the look, but not the performance.

you know, I like the look a lot, and the install wasn't bad. But actually just recently I had a bulb go out. Barely a year old. And now the problem is I'll have to take the lights out, just to access the bulb, to then figure out what style it is in order to replace it. OEM you can remove the bulb without removing the whole headlight assembly. Something to think about.

Charles Langston you don't need the old assembly, the new lights wrap around to replace it. So I tossed them in the trash. One thing I didn't mention (learned later) is you also have to replace the marker bulbs with amber bulbs, as the new SPYDER lights have clear lenses, as opposed to the factory amber lenses with clear bulbs.
