It's so nice to see 1A discussion these more complex issues. Most backyard mechanics are one broken bolt away from being over their heads. Well done, Sue!

You're a LIFESAVER, Sue! I FREAKED out yesterday when I broke the SAME rusty bolt on my 09 Prius trying to replace the control arms 😳 and your video SAVED me! I ordered an induction heater and bought twisty extractors from Home Depot, but I didn't need the heater because all it took was torching the bolt for 5min and my twisty extractor socket twisted it right out! And boy did it make a cringy squeal! Then I found salvaged bolts for free without any rust at all (I live in Colorado). That steering column ended up being the biggest pain, but I was back on the road in 24 hours! 😅

Awesome steps shown. How about a PART 2 video showing how to deal with bolt that breaks off flush so you can use a TWISTY SOCKET on it. And/Or Perhaps a Tap and Die tutorial if needed after that.

I just had the same problem last week except it was the front subframe bolt that broke off beneath the surface of the hole. I knew I was in big trouble. So, I took out my bolt extractor and drilled the hole in the bolt for the extractor. Of course, the extractor broke off inside the bolt. I knew I was now in deeper trouble. So, I took out my map gas torch and heated it up for about 5 minutes. I then took a small chisel and started trying to spin the broken bolt out by tapping the chisel. No dice. So, I applied even more heat and repeated the process. Lo and behold the broken bolt moved a bit. With repeated application of a lot of heat and tapping the broken bolt, I was able to get it out. I knew right then and there that the Lord does indeed work in mysterious ways. My advice to other novices like myself is to pay to get the subframe removed. It is a difficult job fraught with complications. The subframe is very heavy, especially if you leave the control arms attached. It is not nearly as easy as shown on KZbin videos. Let a pro do it.

Not too bad at all. You’re lucky there was still some of the bolt showing. When it breaks flush or under the surface… that’s when it gets really fun

A diy'er would do it lying on the ground! A map-oxy torch is an easy option for diy'ers too, and it delivers much more heat than an ordinary propane torch.

If you hadn't used an air gun on that bolt you probably wouldn't have had an issue. People rely to much on air tools in my opinion. If it doesn't break loose with a breaker bar. A liquid penetrant and a flame, or induction heater are you best friend.

When installing a bolt, is there anything you can do to prevent this from happening in the future? Coat with oil? Anti-seize?

Great and informative vedio.also on rusted up bolts one can saturate them with pb blaster and let them soak overnight.if one is really lucky sometimes you can find a opening in frame to spray oil onto back of bolt to soak the threads real good then if bolt does loosen slightly re apply oil periodically as you turn it back and forth to loosen rust as you turn it out.alsu a 6 point socket or boxend wrench is better than a 12 point type for this type of stuff..keep them hoopties running lol

That's not a regular bottle of butane in that torch, that's map gas, which is very important because it burns much hotter.
@stickwallfarm7 ай бұрын
Is it safe to say it’s necessary to replace any bolt/nut heated to this extreme for removal? I’m assuming its integrity is toasted (no pun intended) once it’s been heated so much. Also, for critical bolts like suspension parts is it ok to use grade 8 replacements from the hardware store or do you always suggest getting OEM bolts? Thanks for such clear and to the point info - very helpful.

I like the 1A videos & I like her as a presenter. My question is why, oh dear why did you go straight to airgun? Penetrating lubricant, heat and torque wrench slowly to get it out. Why airgun jerk & brake it?

If you can't get out an aluminium drain plug to a gearbox, can you use an induction heater without too much risk of setting the gearbox oil on fire?

One question to 1A. Why would someone remove these subframe bolts in the first place? My 2009 Fusion has a rattle that’s getting really bad in the right rear. Subframe bolts would not be the culprit right? I’ve replaced numerous suspension parts already. Thanks so much
@DobleWhiteAndStabley Жыл бұрын
Nice! I actually used the info here. The only criticism is the yellow can on the torch should be acetylene, not butane or propane. Propane has a blue can. Butane I believe is also blue. Anyone want to correct me on the butane?
