See, this is why Al is one of the best. If he doesn't know something, he is honest about it amd will tell you. He's not like 90% of the guys that just make up some shit to sound smart and cause you to have problems with your build for listening. I literally took his advice to call and talk to Haltech about my particular build and based off everything I need, I am getting the basic 550 with universal harness. They do not make a plug n play for my setup but he said that they will even help me with a remote start up base tune and even is helping find me a tuner in my area. I habe a megasquirt on my Camaro and only wish I had this kind of help when I was doing that mess.

Thats looking nice and clean, no reason to hide quality work. I used a MegaSquirt controller for my 95 Dodge Dakota with 5.9 magnum series engine (was 3.9). Actually soldered the entire ECU myself and was able to configure for all my (not LS) sensors. I was also able to configure sequential injection and spark, using LS1 coils salvaged from a paying job. You always can find a few goodies when eating engines from a salvage yard. Able to work out overdrive and lock up on trans as well as AC. The ECU fit my budget and is basically universal for any application, good support from DIYAUTO (dealer) and the forums. Used my brain and read a lot before purchasing. Now working on the new engine and dash harnesses when I can. Great content, I’m sure having to film everything is a pain sometimes but we appreciate it.

A tough part is making sure you’re using the right combinations of wires, terminals and seals. They tend to only really want a specific range of core and insulation size when you read their specs closely. You often need sort of specialist wire like 18ga txl with thin insulation that you just can’t get a your local auto parts suppliers. It really does all come down to careful planning though.

until recently i had not done any full wire in looms before, im a qualified Diesel mechanic and have done some wiring of accessories and a such for electronic brake controllers at work, recently a friend paid for a pommy guy to make a loom for his super charged ncp13 echo with a maxxecu sport, he got the loom and it was more then average, feeling like ive got enough knowledge i put my hand up to fix it, i fully re-wired his flying loom whilst doing a proper concentric twist and heat shrinking it with proper heat shrink breakout boots, i even changed the wiring for sequential injection because the previous people wired it as batch style and then terminated it pulled it in and adjusted the ecu setup to reflect my wiring loaded a base map and turned the key and boom she fucking fired first go never felt so bloody proud in my fucking life and its from watching you guys do the work and actually listening instead of arguing in the comments that gave me the gonads to get it done, total time spent on loom, 8 hours, 15 minutes initialising the ecu and loading turn after firmware update, once again thank you so much for the information and giving me the drive to do it myself now i have friends lining up for my work because they where so impressed of my quality of work

Theres probably 3 days in both engine and ECU. Reduce the ecu spec and cylinder count and it gets faster. Maybe 5 hours uninterrupted for a simple 4 cylinder. But you still have to make connections to the vehicle which is also time consuming.

Awesome. I never really liked wiring, but its the stuff that i have to work out relays and fuses, not so much cutting and connecting wires. Have gotten better at it over the years and reasonably confident at wiring an ecu as long as i can work out whats needed for where. Having an au that needs an aftermarket ecu I'd really prefer something mostly plug in but thats not looking likely.
@GarageItYourself4 жыл бұрын
Great video guys 😊 Wiring isn't scary so long as you are logical in your approach to it. One thing to add with connectors is that you also need to check the current rating of the connector itself. Fine for most of the engine stuff but especially for fans and fuel pumps the 15-20amps will need a larger rated connector or you'll melt the connector. Seen that a good few times 😉

For anyone interested in wiring, I'd recommend starting with small projects. I added a subwoofer to my car, and then removed an aftermarket alarm system and repaired the existing wiring. It ain't much, but it's gotten me much more comfortable with wiring. It's handy to know when bastard pack rats decide to chew through the loom on your car. I wouldn't recommend someone with no experience putting together an entire custom loom unless they have some experienced help or a lot of time and patience.

Probably worth noting for the home gamers that, if you aren't so confident in your mental road map, you can use masking tape instead of leccy tape and cable ties and write on each point what you're doing with that branch or where it lies.

One complaint I have about Haltech universal harnesses is the fuse box, it makes the job of removing and installing the harness through the firewall a lot more difficult than it needs to be. I always cut the fuse box off and crimp in some connectors so I can pass the short end of the harness through the firewall.

I don't have an issue with wiring new things, I have an issue with diagnosing wiring issues in complicated modern cars that act like they are haunted, when there are a million wires, often in unhelpful colours which are difficult to trace, and sometimes terminating and daisy chaining through impossible places like right up behind the dashboard! The wiring issues in my LS400 still give me nightmares. I think that thing had about 6 computers for different things as well! I gave up on the HVAC circuit and re-wired it from scratch with new fuses and relays etc, but then the AC refused to engage because the HVAC computer failed some sort of pre-flight check... Just madness.

Irrational fear? No mate, having seen the average wiring job in aftermarket automotive work, its perfectly rational. People seem to have zero fear, and will run a twist and tape positive insulated only by masking tape in a chassis return vehicle. I worked on a bus once where the tail lights harness was literally zip tied to an exhaust hanger... I'd have thought it'd burn to the ground first time you started it, but apparently it'd done several hundred thousand kilometers and that roll of the dice somehow hadn't occured. On the other hand the alligator clip instead of a fuse for starter solenoid trigger HAD melted into a pretzel (hence why we where fixing it), and the two 12v fans being mounted in series didn't actually turn slower, the left one had just seized solid. So if your going to do the wiring yourself, take the extra time and care to do it properly, it'll save you in the long run.
