On "My Car Story" we're in the Suburbs of Minneapolis MN on 6-2-22.
We're looking at a 1967 American Motors Rambler Rebel in Red, White & Blue Paint. The car comes with the Dealership build drag race 390 CI engine, and a manual transmission.
The car's Owner is Fred Aherns. Fred’s had this car since 2006. Fred shares he traded three cars to get this car. It then needed to be restored, which took 6 years to get this prototype car back to the condition it was in when the Topel Rambler Dealership people were assigned to work on the car. Workers used “Group 19” performance parts to build this Drag Car. This cars best time was recorded at 10.6 in the ¼ mile at Great Lakes Dragway in Union Grove WI.
ENJOY!

Cool car...I didn't know Edelbrock made a cross ram for the AMC's , very cool....the lines remind me of the 68 Roadrunner, which reminds me that the 65 Marlin also predated the 66 Charger...it seems that Mopar must have been peeking in the AMC factory's back window...

My thoughts exactly, especially the grille and taillights. Now that I think of it, one of the bonuses for Chrysler when they bought AMC was AMC's rapid design team. Maybe they swiped styling cues from Plymouth studios and got it to market first.🤔

Lou, although you cannot see the enormous grin on my face, this vid has already made my day at 7:30 a.m.. As a lifelong AMC enthusiast I was not aware of the existence of this beast. It does not take more than a casual glance to see where the styling of the '68 Plymouth Satellite/Roadrunners came from. Early on there was a lot of snickers from the Big-3 guys when the Rambler boys showed up untill...they started seeing their taillights.... Group-19 parts were pretty much a secret untill somebody started asking what the hell is under the hood. Those 390's were absolute beasts - especially with the cross-ram set-up. Love it... thx for your continued features of the little guy Lou. Long live AMC muscle!💪

My dad (Skip) and his best friend (Ken) we're the original builders of this car. My dad was contacted by group 19 at his shop (Skips automotive), to do the build due to my dad's reputation as an engine builder and very successful drag racer. Myself and Ken's son still have the original race team jackets as well as the replica model and world of wheels trophy. Fred did an incredible job on the build and even gave my dad a ride prior to his passing. Truly a piece of history.

This 1967 Rebel reminds me of my aunt and uncle's 1968 Ambassador SST. The only difference was that theirs wasn't equipped for racing. As for this example, I was shocked to see a 390 under the hood rather than the original 343 engine. It sounds awesome whenever he'd wind it out through the gears! He has one fine piece of machinery! I also noticed that the steering wheel was an Ambassador wheel in that Rebel. Wow! 💚

Lou;This ones interesting. AMC was a challenged company due to financial restraints so they had to make do with what they had. Too bad they're not around anymore as they were a decent car for the money. They were competing with the big three which wasn't easy but they sure gave them a run for their money and this "one off" drag car proves that. For AMC this was a troublemaker when it went up against the "pony cars" of the era. Their V8's were strong engines lots of torque that would set the drag strip on fire if the tires were barbequed long enough! I'm sure this car brings back great memories for Fred as he was around when this was made. I wouldn't mind having an AMX Javelin if I could afford and find one. In Canada they're all rusted out so I suppose a trip down south or out west to California would reveal one one day. God bless you both😄🙏👍💪

Too cool! I also did not know that car existed. My Father-in-law bought a Rebel Machine new in 1970 and told me how fast that car would go. He said there were two at the dealer in Bend ,Oregon and that the town sheriff bought the other one. He scared himself in it one too many times and figured he was going to die in it if he didn't get rid of it, so he sold it. He's passed away now, but this car reminded me of him and that story.

I like all the old AMC products, I've had quite a few different ones way back when, I even had a 4 dr Rebel with a 6 banger, still cool in my book, but a buddy of mine up in Ohio ended up with that Rebel, he ended up putting a 401 in it out of a Javelin, I never saw it with that setup but he did send me pictures of it running at Edgewater Dragstrip, near Cincinnati or Hamilton county actually, that was many many moons ago! Awesome car. I wish I could have been around for the factory drag battles of those days. Great to see this one off being cared for so well, yet being allowed to stretch her legs a little. Many discounted AMC but they had some healthy contenders back in the day. Thanks for sharing Lou. Take care.

@@loucostabile No probs Mate. As most of the people watching your vids are car people ( I have a modest stable of Australian muscle cars)... I think you should take the time to dig a little deeper into the mechanical specs as that's what we car nerds like to hear. I liked hearing the back story of the cars history but lets get the camera in there and start looking at all the mechanical details. Good job.

Really nice car and the exhaust at the end when he stretched her legs running through the gears, that was music to my ears. I always thought AMC made some nice looking cars. It’s a shame they are not still around. I would love to piss off my neighbors with this car.

Well Lou maybe the next time your in Calif you can check out some of my Ramblers. Fred purchased a 67 Marlin from me back in the 90s and restored it. It came out really nice of course. I have a 1966 Rebel for speed that has been featured in some magazine articles. They only produced 125 four speed Rebels in 1966 at this point there is only 7 left

You asked about the lack of shocks on top of the shock tower area, that's because up until 1970, AMC cars used a trunnion front suspension. A 1970 and up Rebel (and then Matador), would have had the shock stud showing through. I'm surprised the owner didn't mention that.
