@@loucostabile I was lucky enough to get to ride with my brother in one,. Dad and Chris ported the heads with a slight cam upgrade, but stock pistons, we weren't a rich family but we had the hottest rod in school she would pull the front end off the ground in second gear it couldn't get enough traction to do it in first gear. I had a great family of hot rodders, mostly Mopar. When Chris smoked my uncle Rick in his 440 challenger he was bummed. He actually said at Thanksgiving. " Kid you got to put some mufflers on that thing" Chris, said, if you were in front, it wouldn't be so loud. It also was changed to a Carter 650 that dad wired the secondarys to engage without vacuum. 396 Chevelle's were fun to beat only the four spread had a chance

That is the same body as my brothers race car. Like I said before I always loved AMC for its muscle cars and non muscle cars. They were a rugged little car in any head to head of daily driving and their 6 cylinder was one of the smoothest running little engines I had the pleasure of servicing.

I love these ramblers! When I was a kid I was riding my bike on the side of the road and a sc snuck up behind me, slowed down, and then floored it! I almost fell off my bike I got so scared. He ripped through the gears and burned rubber all the way through. Man, one of my favorite memories as a kid on a bmx bike. This was 1995 or 1996 and I didn’t know about muscle cars yet. I was like “ what the hell was that thing???” Because of the far out paint and the mailbox scoop on the hood. After that I was hooked.

Thanks to the owner and to Lou for this story. This is a perfect example of how "every" manufacturer had some great cars to offer to the public. Being mostly a GM guy and not close to any AMC dealerships growing up, it has been in only recent years that I realized how much AMC had to offer to a wide range of customers. I too at one time had the "RAMBLER" stigma. If I was a larger volume collector I would most likely have at least one AMC car in my collection ranging from a 65-66 Marlin to a 71-74 Javelin AMX (I even like the 3-tone 56 Nash Ambassador with the new AMC 327 motor). Also, nice to see a story in my state. For viewers who know little about AMC (or this car in particular) this had to be a very much appreciated and revealing story. Thanks again.

I like all the wild engine sounds when you take it out on the highway! The mailbox scoop was an "air bleed" design to pull in less turbulent air which was above the surface of the hood. When engineers started wind tunnel testing their cars they suggested changing the hood scoops for more efficiency.

Gorgeous cars, both "A" and "B" scheme. Correct me if I'm wrong. Off the showroom floor, the S/C Rambler could do 14.3 in the quarter mile all day long in stock form. It had the best braking performance of any American car, the Porsche 911 was the only car that braked better. It outhandled most American cars due to the new ball joint design and it's low weight. I subscribed to Classic Sixties magazine when I was seventeen and this was in the first issue if I recall correctly. The magazine name was changed a year later. I still have every issue of Classic Sixties magazine in a sealed plastic bin. 😁

@dancurtis34253 жыл бұрын
Yes, they would do 14.3 @ 98 MPH right off the showroom floor. And yes the brakes were amazing for a car at that time. The new upper and lower ball joint came out in 1970, the rear after the SC/Rambler was sold but a mew amd tight trunion front end handled amazingly well also. This car is easily into the 12s as it was shown in this video in a large part as a result of the adjustable factory "torgue link" tractions bars that eliminated rear wheel hop and helped the tires to bite down hard on the pavement

@@dancurtis3425 Seems like the trap speed is a bit slow for that much engine and being that light. My guess would be aerodynamics not so good? When they were turning in the 12's what kind of MPH were they getting?
@dancurtis34253 жыл бұрын
@@zulumax1my 68 AMX with this same engine except for a single 750 on a Torker intake ran very low 13s @ 110MPH with terrible 60 ft times due to running street tires on very tall 3.15 gear ratio with G60 tires and only being able to do `1/3 throttle out of the hole until the tires gained traction. The SC/Ramblers came from the factory with 3.54 axle ratios and weighed in at 300-350 lbs less than my AMX so pound for pound it would be considerably faster. This SC/Rambler did high 12s, again with street tires, but the MPH did not change a whole lot due not being able to really get full throttle until it also gained traction.

The first SC/Rambler I (knowingly) remember seeing in person was an A/scheme car the summer after I graduated from high school. I had gone to a local mom and pop clothing store to pick up some nice new clothes for when I started college, and as I was coming out, I chanced to hear this intimidating rumble. Peered up the block a way, and lo and behold, there was a red white and blue boxy beast, flying the flag for AMC and heading right in my direction! It had Center Line wheels, big rubber out back, a modest roll cage and tow bars on the front bumper. I could barely believe my eyes and ears on that idyllic sunny afternoon. Subsequently I spotted the car a few more times at local cruise nights, and then a few years later a photo of it at a drag strip turned up in a book about muscle cars that I had bought. I knew it was the same car, from the way it was set up, its appearance and the license plates. Never came across it again--I wonder where it resides now.

Oh wow, just gorgeous. We used to have a small restaurant next to my place of work (am retired now). The place was called Country Bob's. In years past Bob owned an SCRambler in the A scheme. I remember him saying how he wished he had kept it.

As a kid, seeing either an A or B Scheme at the Auto Show or World of Wheels would be the equivalent of finding the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow - that's how rarely I saw them. And now, I've heard what one sounds like: Oh. My. God. You've read my comment about how I'd play the lottery in order to buy one of the multitudes of cars you've featured on your channel, Lou - so you already know what I'm doing this weekend. I wonder if Dan would build an AMX Pacer? :) Thanks, Lou!

This AMC is the direct base of a car that is a true legend here in Argentina, the Torino (google "IKA Torino"). It had many styling improvements from Pininfarina that gave it a more european look, with a MUCH better interior, a better rear suspension, ZF gearbox and a very modern (for its time) 233 ci OHC six inline. It was produced for almost 15 years in two and four doors, and a used '77 coupe was my first car, that brings me very good memories. A wonderful car with great handling and performance, despite the "small" engine, that it's considered the best six cilinder car of his era. And about this pristine AMC, it's a small and light muscle car for USA standards, so I can imagine that with more than 300 hp, this thing can eat many "sacred cows" with way more power.

Hi, Lou! As I watched this episode, I had a thought. When Kenny Chesney said "I was going as fast as a Rambler goes, I could feel the speed from my head to my toes", could he have been talking about THIS one?! So I guess this is how forever feels! LOL! This may have been the Rambler's last year, but it sure went out with a bang! Thanks to you and Dan for taking us out scramblin'!

You mentioned Thrush mufflers. My dad bought a 340 Dart new in '69. At some point in the mid-'70's, he bought some Thrush mufflers to put on his car. Sounded great! They came with the bird head decals that he put on the little vent windows.

Great video Lou! Had a street racer version of one of these in college. Previous owner had painted over it in primer red unfortunately, as he also had a super stock model that folks confused the two and wouldn't race him. Anyway, was my daily driver for a couple of years and was so much fun, especially blowing the doors off SS/454 Chevelle's, Z28 Camaros and 427 Mustangs.

AMC made awesome unique muscle cars. By far some of the lightest and sporty and the small block and big block cars. The Rebel Sprint, AMX Javelin, and bad to the bone Hearst Scrambler.. Jeep and Eagle probably would of saved AMC eventually if they could of held on but who knows lol

Sweet Lou these little classics can be Beach course we put aluminum heads on them the right carburation open up the breathers pack of steel crank dome the Pistons and they'll launch like you wouldn't believe but the first thing I would do with that one is launch those hideous wheels right off that rig that is ridiculous unless you're going to the circus and I'm so glad I could make some great Viking comments as sweet Lou post another American classic 🤭😎✌️👊💓😁💪🤗
