Your “panel bond” buddy was “spot on”, lol, seriously, panel bond is used on all new vehicles, so it makes perfect sense to use it on an older vehicle. Plus, you don’t have to worry about warping if you were to weld it together. A couple of weeks ago I was at my daughter’s house and noticed that her bumper cover had come loose on one side. I mentioned it to my son-in-law, and he said he was going to put some Gorilla Tape on it until he could take it into the dealer. I told him that all he needed to fix it was panel bond and he’d never heard of it, well needless to say he got a lesson in bonding panels with automotive adhesives that day. It took us about ten minutes to fix something that the dealer would have taken a day or two to fix.

Spot welds won't be as susceptible to breaking from vibration like rivets would, but panel bonding is the modern answer. All current manufacturers use a combination of spot welds and panel bond to create not only a joint, but a seal. Less rust issues in the future. So glad to see such great progress!

I'd glue it and put a few rivets just to hold it in place while it dries. Not only will the panel bond prevent moisture seepage for future rusting, if it's flexible enough, it will allow for minute movement while flexing, and prevent clanking of the panels together. 3M makes amazing adhesives. My RX300 Lexus was missing the badges on the back because it was in a wreck or something before I owned it. I ordered new ones off ebay for $12 and bought some emblem adhesive made by 3M. Those suckers aren't going anywhere. It looked and smelled like model car glue, but tacky like tree sap, and stringy. As others have said... If it's 3M, it will work better than you expect. Maybe you can do an experiment with any leftovers and glue two plates together to see how much weight it takes to break the bond. That'd be an entertaining video on it's own. Or have Matt see how bulletproof it is... or both?

That was the most fun ever this morning. My father was a fighter pilot at the end of WW2 and flew that very plane. He moved into the jets in Korea. So now, I'm wondering how much glue holds together the new airplanes. Makes me queasy. Anyway, watching you makes me appreciate the men on our world. Some of us understand every word or Texan combination of several words that us Texans have grown up with. It’s never ceased to amaze me how a person can take every bolt, nut, wire, pieces of unidentified metal parts, off what seems to be an unsalvagable vehicle and within a few months and lots of stern words, remarkably turn it back into a running, stunning vehicle again. My ex used to say “anything left over, were just spare parts the previous owner had donated with the sale of the vehicle.” I honestly cannot wait to hear that motor turn over. Nothing is appreciated more than bringing something back from the dead ☠️. I’m still waiting on my call or email to come hold a flashlight, or can you clean up the mess I’ve spent months making. I think they are called Executive Garage Assistants! Either way, I look forward to seeing and hearing how you’re coming along every month. A man of many talents, and probably master of a few. Btw, do you have any cd’s or albums of your band? I would pay handsomely to get my hands on one or a few! My next and hopefully last hip surgery is scheduled in a few weeks, not a big deal, but a prayer for a quick recovery and some long lasting moisture from the sky would be appreciated. Stay cool, and tell Matt, I cannot wait to come spend some time at the new Desperado Resort, I have a few pew pews I need to sight in. I’ll keep praying for all the Carriker family.

Maybe you can come help me in the shop as part of your Physical therapy!

Panel bonding that will be just as strong as those spot welds. Maybe even stronger seeing that every inch of it will be bonded and not just a spot weld every 1-1/2 or so apart. Certain areas on most newer vehicles are held together with panel bond, and it's so strong that you can't get those sections apart without completely destroying them.

As to you question at the end I have to say for authenticity you should weld it all but as you say no one will see it unless they cut it open again. I'm not a body guy so looking forward to your next video to see what you decided. Here is a thought what if you did both put your bonding in but also put in a few rivets to help strengthen and properly hold all your panels in place ? Just a thought

Dr Lee, I worked at a manufacturer that built doors for a large equipment manufacturer that starts with a C and ends with a T and we made doors that used the panel bonding method. In fact, we called them "glue doors". We built them in two steps. The frame would be fully welded. Then we would tack weld the door skins just to hold them in place while the bonding agent set. It was that 2 part system. Very strong and I wouldn't be afraid to use it. You will just want good clean surfaces where you plan to use the adhesive bonding agent. Another place I worked did the same with aluminum diamond plate. If I remember correctly, the aluminum had to be etched with an acid to get the adhesive to bond properly. I could be wrong. I was just a welder there and didn't do the gluing. 😉

There are a large number of exotic Marques that use various combinations of panel bonding and rivets or self tapping screws and the result is a solid connection. It is particularly good for dissimilar materials. And, as others have mentioned, this technique is filtering down to more mass market brands.

Dr. Lee, My background is with aircraft, mostly helicopters. Much of the construction of them uses bonding. Structural bonding for honeycomb panels, rotor blades, and much more. It's been used for decades. (Since the '50's). it's worth a try. If it separates, just clamp it up and drill the holes and drive the rivets. Looking forward to the end results!! Love what you share with us!

With the increased use of Aluminum, Kevlar and Carbon fiber in cars and trucks today the only way to get a structural bond with steel is by using something like 3M panel bond. To add to that, I've heard engineers say it's stronger than spot welding. I've also heard paint and body guys say they use it all the time but they pray they never have to remove it because grinding is the only solution and it takes a god awful amount of time. I say go for it! But be extra meticulous because you don't want to have to grind it out.

I was a little concerned when you said you were going to work on a cow panel but then I remembered you're a veterinarian and realized that cow panel was in good hands.

I also vote panel bond, it will not only glue em together permanently but also seal the seam. Not to mention that's how alot of modern cars are held together, usually tears the metal before it pops the seam

I overengineer. Panel bond with rivets to hold it together, ensuring a strong bond, and maybe spot welds on some corners. :)

I used to work in a auto body shop (in the office so not a body man). However, the vast majority of panels on modern cars use 3M panel bond to join panels together. There are still some spot welds in certain areas but the panel bond forms a water tight seal that is permanent. There are a few different types of panel bond so check with an experienced body tech on which formula would be the best option for your specific use. Love your channel, Dr. Lee. 👍🏻🙏

My Dad an old school panel beater used rivets and lead fill. Try the new glue stuff so much easier 😊😊

Good morning Dr. Lee, first let me say thank you for the laugh! I think I need to start reading the comments a little more often. I missed all the cowl/cow confusion lol. I hope you and the family had a wonderful labor day weekend. Ours was quiet, just the way I like it. lol. Glad you got some friends to come over and help you with the blazer. And even happier that you have the ac to keep ya cool whilst ya work on it!!

I just got a house in central Texas. And the house was abandoned for a while. When I was clearing out the 7-8 foot tall weeds in the back yard I found a abandoned 1959 Oldsmobile 88. I still don't know what I am going to do with it. But amazingly that old steel body is in remarkably good shape.

I loved the cowl/cow panel talk! Welding, bonding aren’t in my wheelhouse. I’d think if they glue surgical incisions there must be something to it but I know you’ll make the right decision.
