The Super and heavy duty are also rated for more weight and abuse on harsh roads/offroad. The super and heavy are also much more compact. You trade for ease of tray change with the quick rack, and easier pull handle change.

I ended up getting the Equip'd based on some of the new features such as ease of adding additional trays and ease of tilting especially in a 4-bike configuration. Unfortunately I CANNOT recommend the Equip'd as a 4 bike rack based on lack of durability of the pull rod assembly. I've been enjoying this rack for months as a 2 bike setup and finally installed the 3rd and 4th add-ons for a family road trip. Carrying 2 adult and 2 kid bikes (all non-e-bikes, all under 30lbs ea) and under normal on-road driving the weight of these bikes caused a bend and subsequent crack (remember, it's aluminum so it will only bend so much before cracking) in the piece that keeps the rack in place following a tilting operation. At the very most this may have happened when going over a speed bump at a reasonable speed--something I think we all consider "normal use." When I reached out to 1up about it I was told someone must have backed into my rack because it would have required 2,000 lbs of force to cause this. I can tell you that is 100% not the case and furthermore the metal is bent in a way that would only happen with downward force. DO NOT buy the Equip'd as a 4-bike setup unless you have 15lb road bikes and only drive on pristine roads.

How does this compare to the existing 1up rack? It seems to be $120 more than the Super Duty rack, but supports less weight (50 vs 75). All the racks now come with the locking hitch pin, so it seems the only advantage is the extended release bar?

@kristenb7380
@kristenb7380 3 жыл бұрын
@@MotoAtheist it can't support quite as much weight because it doesn't have as much support under the trays. The features i've found in all my research include the ratcheting arms having a much smoother operation, the location of the release handle (without having to buy an extender separate), the wider wheelbase that's accepted, included fat tire spacer kit if that applied to you. Basically just a few different features that the other models don't include. And me personally, i like the sleeker look of the equip-d model like when it's folded up against your trunk. I also don't care too much about how much weight the rack can hold since i don't run e-bikes or any other really heavy bike, so if that was really important to you, i would go with the super duty over the equip-d.

I just received my Equip D Single plus ADD-On. I notice at 5:07 that there are 2 bolts securing each side tray. One Hex head for rotation of the tray for storage, and one Allen Head bolt to lock from rotation. Your Allen bolt head is on bottom of tray with bolt pointing upwards. My Allen head bolt points down, through the drill hole into the threaded support below the tray. The Assembly Manual shows bolt pointing down, page 3 Step 6. Did 1-Up change the design, or could you have your bolt installed backwards? Thanks for the video.

It does...it's just buried right next to the slotted mount, so you have to reach under -- big deal. I'll prefer it there, where passersby don't where it is. Most people don't use the twist-to-lock feature under there either, to lock the handle into the slots so it can't be raised or lowered (until unscrewed and unlocked, that is). The slotted hitch bar and lock was an improvement to the original 2" racks, over that silly loop of velcro! And, relying on the "security" allen wrench for anti-theft. Now, they have locks for everything!

Any rack is going to have some wobble at the hitch, it's just the way it is. The bikes will also wobble when hitting bumps. I would suspect most racks including this one will seem inadequate on really knarly off road terrain. Their site also says the Equip-D, the model shown in the video is not as rugged. Their comment below about the Equip-D ~This is our newly designed rack with more built in features. This is not a replacement to our original rack and is not rated for extreme off-road and RV usage like our Super Duty Models.~

I've had mine since about 2005 (can't really remember). The thing is a tank (its not light...). You are going to get some flex (there is no way around it from any single point hitch mounted rack) but I've banged the crap out of mine (including grounding out on it) and it keeps on going. Make sure your bikes are in tight though.
@trhuffer
@trhuffer 3 жыл бұрын
@@MotoAtheist the super duty *IS* for off-road and trailering. There is virtually *NO* wobble at the hitch when tightened in. there *is* fore-aft wobble on the rack, but most say a little is actually desirable since otherwise all such forces would be transferred directly to the frame of the bike. I am curious what the better alternative would be? Maybe a hanger, with the bottom end strapped down good and hard?
@MotoAtheist
@MotoAtheist 3 жыл бұрын
@@trhuffer I have the heavy duty on a 1 1/4" hitch. You are correct, there is no wobble at the hitch with the 1up, that was my error. Not sure what I even meant, I knew it didn't wobble there. The wobble is from the overall bike supports which, as you say, is considered desirable to keep from damaging anything on the bikes. However, I can't imagine anything happening on a rack being as stressful as actually riding it. So, even if the rack was 100% solid, I don't see how any damage to the bikes could occur. I used a roof mount for years where I had to take the front wheel off and the forks mounted to the Yakima. I would consider that a pretty solid mount, it never budged or wobbled and no damage was ever inflicted. Got tired of the over head lifting finally and found this 1up and never looked back. There simply is no other rack even close. The fact you can mount the bikes anyway you want and not care makes it great when you're constantly mounting different bikes. Handle bar and seat positions don't matter, direction you put them on the rack doesn't matter, they always fit because you can adjust them left or right instantly and done.

@MotoAtheist
@MotoAtheist 4 жыл бұрын
Most of the time you want to release the back wheel first so that the front wheel stays secure and won't turn. You then grab the top of the front wheel at the rack arm while you pull the release lever and pull both the bike and arm together until the front is loose enough. That way you have hold of the front wheel the whole time to keep the bike stable. The other option is to release the back wheel and move the arm far enough that you can grab the bike top rail and pull back to release it from the front arm. Depends on how you have it mounted one direction of the other.

But the OG super duty rack is a great rack! What really, can't you do with that? You'll have to order with the spacer kits installed is all, still less $$ than this...and you'll need a 2" receiver. The "old" super duty is a current model -- I just ordered my new one 3 days ago. Simple, rugged, clean, compact -- it does the job and will last. A new one will have the slotted hitch bar and locking pin too. I'm getting a couple of wheel locks and add-on locks with mine, so they'll all be keyed the same.

When arrived it was very simple to adjust and put together. I also added spike tape over the metal hooks before securing and tightening the straps, and no scratches. I also purchased the top bar made by the same company so that my cruiser sits straight on the rack without having to turn upside down. Extra bungee cords are used to secure the front wheel from flapping and even piece of mind knowing your bike is secure. Definitely recommend...

You don't have to make any adjustments to the 1up and it doesn't care which direction any of the bikes get mounted. You can easily shift the bikes left or right to make them fit with ease. You can't do that with other racks, you have to fiddle with everything and change stuff all around to make every bike fit and that's the only way the bikes can go on until you reconfigure again. 1up simply doesn't care even if you reverse the bike order, they will all still fit easily, no adjustments.

@@MtbrVideos I have two bikes: 2015 DH Fury WC and Transition Convert Carbon. Got them both brand new (total MSRP of both is above $10k, but who pays MSRP, right?). So for last 4 years they were just as safely transported with Chinese roof rack, a kit of two cost me $45 brand new from eBay. I admit that I had to go to hardware store to get few bolts and metal plates to mount them using T-slot of BMW cross-bars (photos.app.goo.gl/jPMqBauvKXeNSRqAA ). The total cost of used e90 crosbars with a set of two brand new racks was $150. 4 seasons passed, driving to a bike park 70 miles away almost every weekend with speeds sometimes beyond 100 mph. No problems whatsoever! Just some bolts rusted a bit. The only disadvantage I experience is that loading/unloading time is much higher (10..15 min for two bikes). If you compare against identical roof-racks from Thule or Yakima, instead of using eccentric clamp my Chinese rack goes with two bolts to hold the bike frame. But considering that I've saved hundreds of dollars when I was not able to afford anything "cool" - I call it a win! I am in the market for a hitch design because I've finally traded-in my old compact sedan car for a much newer SUV (for the very same reason to be able to use a tire-hold hitch rack - neither roof rack can match this experience). But it is disappointing to hear such a lame excuse from such a source like MTBR to justify the price of this product. There are ton of people spending big money on bikes but saving on everything else in their lives (true biker life goals ... LOL). This is just a rack - few pieces of aluminum extrusion cut to the length and screwed together. We do shell out big money on bikes because they represent a ton of R&D to deliver riding performance (suspension, drive-terrain, frame stiffness vs weight). But what we are paying for a rack is really just a design ingenuity - ease of use of "tire-hold" approach (1Up was the first with this idea, and INNO now has it copied). You do not need hundreds of engineers and R&D time to come up with this solution. There is not a single injection molded plastic part, just a number of CNC procedures with aluminum sock. The idea and whole design probably handled by a single guy. This product can be made in a garage if you've got $400 CNC router from China. I estimate the manufacturing cost for this specific one is about $250 or less (materials, CNC + labor, ...even US labor!). So the true question is - how much money you are ready to put down for the experience of using it and reward to a guy who invented the concept?

@@MtbrVideos My 1UP was on my car when I was rear ended and to make it whole again only cost me $60.00. No reason these can't last for decades. Aside from some black anodized coating peeling off and some fading from the sun it's as good as it was on day 1.
