I believe they're speaking Middle English, which by the early colonial age had pretty much been completely replaced by early modern English. So the game seems to be inaccurate in that regard by roughly a few centuries. By the 1600s the English spoke at least in a way that we can understand in the modern day, although it was much more archaic than how it's spoken now.

I'd like to see you playing 0 A.D. It's a free, open source RTS that started 20 years ago as an AoE 2 mod, but developed into it's own game with it's own engine. The time period is roughly around AoE 1 but it plays a lot more like AoE 3. Great game.

5:40 so when the enemy rushes you, with say 10 pikes or something, he cannot just siege your barracks for free, but you can use your towncenter fire to protect your barracks.

I really loved the AOE3 campaigns, they have a good connection and story (John, Nathaniel and Chayton Black are nice, and also Japanese and Indian ones). But for some reason, I always found the skirmish games too repetitive. But I pre-ordered anyway because I am looking forward to give it a try!

btw, xp early is always worth it, since it brings you faster to your first (or second) shipment compared to your enemy. If you send your 3 vills 10 seconds earlier than your opponent it makes quite a difference. Usually games are won by getting ahead of your opponent little by little. However if the choice is between wood and xp, wood is probably preferable. Generally its wood>food>xp>all other however it actually really depends on the situation, russians for example would prefer food over the all others, sometimes 50 coin can also be quite strong, or lamas/cows when you are india... and so on

I remember when AoE3 came out. I was in university, tried a bit of it, but didn't have time to really get into it. I remember back then how the new 3D graphics for RTS were the new thing but it was honestly pretty bad. Colonial Period is my favorite historical age so I was disappointed back then. I think I'll be getting AoE3 DE within a couple weeks of release - after watching review videos like this of course :)

It was the big game for me when I was younger and I was just infatuated with it ever since, it's a game I hold really near and dear and almost don't wanna see major more of updated graphics and such, but some of the changes are nice, I just don't wanna see it become aoe2 de, that game seems so meta driven now instead of a relaxing fun RTS it just feels, like everything is the same, and everything has to follow the individual meta instead of being able to have some creativity and individuality

@@Daniel-pg9qh that you really have to follow the build order, like age up at this many villagers, do this now, if you completely disregard the build order you can end up needing a lower level opponent but if you follow it and aren't good the ai is too hard or not hard enough. And in AoE3 you can have real dynamic battles not relying on any build order

I feel like AoE2 players will find AoE3 'extreme'ly easy. I love both games and I actually started off playing AoE3. It took me a long time to learn AoE2 but I realized that had automatically made me a much much better AoE3 player. Imo the key is to never keep the TC idle!

That's mostly due to how the AI is scripted and how aoe2 has lot of simple aifunc libraries in a much simpler game logic sense to implement because the most complicated thing to what matters to the ai is dodging projectiles and converting each unit individually which is built in the .per file. In aoe3, you have treasure creeping, shipment management, Trading post management, Revolutions, Special abilities, Wonder abilities, Consulate management and few others i'm forgetting. To properly program this in a deterministic way for the ai to know when to put more escrow than not is quite not as easy as making the aoe2 ai. Doesn't help that userpatch introduced lot of more functions for ai scripting while aom/aoe3 engine is pretty hardcoded to giving scripters new tools to work with.

@@zonetropper that makes sense. Also the unit classes in AoE3 are so much more complicated. It must be hard to code appropriate counters given so many different units in the game, no? For instance hand infantry usually counter hand cavalry but using a group of musketeers against Lancers isn't an optimal choice, while using them against Cossacks is okay. Not that musketeers are hand infantry haha. But then again, that is really what I love about AoE3. In AoE2, I feel like I'm playing chess sometimes.

personally, i've found aoe3 online much harder than aoe2. but for AI battles you're absolutely right, the aoe2 battles are harder. i think zonetropper's reply is 100% correct.

@@mitrajyotighosh4592 Consider some units as specialists. Lancers and Mahuts for example would be anti infantry specialists. While muskets are good against cavalry as a whole they will not counter them. So you use anti cav specialists as a hard counter sams, dops, rods. Or you can choose to ignore their specialty all together and just send huss against them

P.S. to take the treasure with two outlaw riflemen, I set my explorer's attack mode to melee, stand him next to one rifleman, crackshot the other guy, and shift-queue him to them attack the guy standing next to him. He'll lose very little HP.

if your wondering what treasures are good to get, anything that says el gupo polllo is the best. maybe not from a strategic viewpoint, but i always loved collecting the boots of the lost explorer "the handsome chicken"

Hunts rot at 0.7 food per second, just slightly less than the rate at which a settler collects food from it (0.84). So yes, rot matters if you've only got a few villagers collecting from each animal, it's more efficient to concentrate them on a few animals and leave the rest alive.

I play with British too and as soon as I get into 2nd age they attack none stop until I'm dead...and that's on hard :( I'm as fast as my opponent but regardless of how many troops I make they still overwhelm me.

Does herding the hunt towards your TC have any passive benefits? Or is it just a simple protect your villagers incase you get raided thing?

It doesn't affect the gather rate, it just protects your Villagers and decrease the walk time towards the hunt.

Have they actually nerfed cards? Damn, cant wait to see. The "instant cuirassier" strat was one of the issues that made this game quite imbalanced, especially for longer lasting games, and france to be quite OP. Basically the Cuirassier is french special cav unit (3 pop, 150 f 150 g) that can have up to 1150 hp and around 60 atk with 3 area damage. So quite a strong unit per se. The problem with this unit are the supporting cards, (fast cav age 2, reducing cav training time by 40%) and more so the age 4 card that reduces training time AND reduces cost to 127/127. Plus the church tech, another 40% faster training. That means you can create this unit instantly, in every single game, very annoying. Will be interesting to see how they nerfed certain cards.

Playing old AOE3 and then AOE2 DE and then coming back to this really makes the difference in AI obvious. With far less effort you can get a significant lead over 3 DE AI, while the 2 AI really shows it has had more development time, and benefits from a more developed and consistent meta. Of course, it's not just the meta, though, 3 AI is just more stupid in general. Moderate AI for example literally walks groups of settlers into your army/occupied territory for res. Hopefully there's still room for improvement there, otherwise 3 won't have nearly as much content for those that like to play singleplayer. There is one thing I can already say I really like about the Swedes though. The Hakkapelliita actually speak Finnish instead of Swedish, as they should. These kinds of things are nice, even if they're missing their most signature battlecry.

I wonder if this is as easy to do as the Ottomans. They are a harder civ to play because their Dark age (lol AoE2 terminology!) is very different. They're like the opposite of the British - while the British get more settlers easily, it's actually very hard to build an eco with Ottomans early on.

From what I've played of aoe3 is that settlers and resource gather speed upgrades are worse than straight up resource shipments. Also if you have map control build trade posts. shipments win games.

Its really depending on the Situation. If you have already a eco of more than 30 Vills, sending in a 30% gather speed card will have a good impact. The 700 resource crates are great early on and for the first push, but i dont like the Idea of being dependend on the XP

I've been playing the game since 2005. I've been playing definitive edition since 2020. I have a bad habit. At the beginning of the game, I watch market improvements and workers. I'm trying to collect wood and build towers. I do not produce any soldiers. I'm trying to skip a beat. I've been waiting a long time to send out soldiers and attack. Enemies earn a lot of money in a short time and become extremely powerful. They are coming with their armies. I am dying without fighting because I am busy with different things. Even raiding resource-gathering workers at the beginning of the game is very useful. But I don't get soldiers from the deck of cards, I constantly get cards that increase building and resource production or military statistics. So I don't even get soldiers as gifts. I think I need to change myself

The Ai still does the same errors that the hardest AI did. It does not raid, it does not counter your units (it makes the pre define units) it has a really bad deck, and it creates random buildings

I tried playing ranked TGs, but it wouldn't allow me to invite other people to my party. And when other people invited me, it wouldn't search for a match. I think that single player will be mostly fine, but multiplayer will be rather buggy and lacking in features.

Pretty disappointed they left that speed penalty for being attacked by melee units in. That was the number one thing I wanted changed in AoE3 DE.

snaring is a mechanic that I personally really like. it allows melee units to actually catch up to ranged units without turning kiting into a non-factor. However, while it works pretty well in aoe3 imo it is definitely a mechanic that doesn't suit every game so I am kinda glad that they didn't reintroduce it to aoe4

Brits grenadiers are actually very powerful in II age and you can easily end this game with them 8 mins earlier. Just try the "Improved Grenades" and you will be good.

I think that british grenadiers are generally underrated. What's great about them is that, if you decide to tech into readcoats, most of their upgrades also benefit grenadiers which means, it is extremely easy to combine these two.

Hm at least it doesn't look like the AI is cheating. The hardest AIs in many RTS games cheat with things such as faster gathering rates and full map visibility. But I'm hoping to see improvements at launch or within a couple of weeks after.
