My water pump failed ay 119K in my 2015 Passat TDI (NMS, USA). I did my water pump and timing belt last weekend by following your KZbin video. Your KZbin video is the best and easiest one relates to the repair in my car. When installing the new timing belt the easiest way for me was is putting the belt to the water pump at last. Step by step procedure explained in the video was very help full. Thank you very much buddy.

The reason why the book says to loosen the camshaft bolts and pump centre nut is for proper belt tension to be achieved without altering the timing.

Hi, i took the plunge and decided to change my own cam belt (and my depth of mechanics doesn't go past changing a wheel). Bought a Gates kit, everything went superb thanks to your excellent video. Superb!! What a great, detailed video. My car has just gone into the garage for same job on a Mk7 Golf 2013 2.0 TDI. Years ago, I`d done a cambelt change myself, but now, I let someone else with tools, knowledge, time and confidence do it. Great to see the amount of work that goes into such, in essence, a simple job i.e. remove a belt and put it back on. So time consuming to replace a belt!! Thanks for the video. Much better than any channel on TV!!!

Thanks for the video, this the by far the most detailed video of timing belt and water pump change I have ever seen in KZbin. You even went through the plastic tray removal steps one by one as for dyi person even this part can be challenging sometimes. Also the bleeding as well. I believe if you removed the hose just front of the camshaft pulley, you might have a chance to not remove the locking pin.

Good video but one mistake you need to losen the cam shaft pulley and fuel pump pulley so they move in their slots before puting tension on the belt. Turn them clock wise as far as they go in slots before fitting belt that way when tensioning they move left. The way you done it you are only tensioning one side of belt. How this makes sense
@Source212
@Source212 3 ай бұрын
Hey Agree mate. Do i need to losen that small bolt in camshaft too? For what reason is this small one good? Dont understand really and cant find a Guideline. After losen of camshaft pulley and pump pulley and small bolt i can install tension Roller and than beld right? Than rotate and Check again and if okay tighten it?

Successfully completed this yesterday, now I have a p2456 code. Reading up on this a lot of people have experienced this after a timing belt and water pump change. Some folks had a differential pressure sensor melt down. Oddly enough the sensor that melted, when I went to disconnect the hose to get it out of the way, it was already disconnected. Not sure what's going one here. Some replaced the sensor but then they had to like calibrate it or something with vcds which I don't have. Any advice?
@diydaly
@diydaly 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you got it done! ive never had that issue my self, the pressure switches are obviously near the belt, strange that you had one disconnected , its should have been throwing up a fault previously.. if you do replace it they are meant to be reset using a diagnostic machine , a cheap one wont do it either.. id reconnect everything a give it a good drive see if the fault clears, you really to to get it checked on a decent diagnostic machine to see what the sensors are reading

@@diydaly question for ya, at the part where you have the belt on with the left side with a bit of slack; right side taut, I performed the check of two full rotations and then reinserted my pins. The pin on the fuel pump was hard to get in this time around, before it had slipped in no problem. I’m afraid I somehow ended up one tooth off, although I left that pin in the entire time. car was seeming to run and drive fine but today got a CEL and a P0014 code. Any advice? Take it all off and put the pins in so everything is dead on, and readjust the belt?

Thanks for the great how-to, made the job really easy for me 👍 I just put on a Gates kit. Tension adjuster broke even with finger tight nut. I see Gates claim it is user fault, and they have investigated the problem and the nut has to be held still while setting tension. In my opinion it is a crap part made out of some sort of cast material and not real steel. Since it is my own car i just used some pliers on the broken part instead of the hex tool.

Just in the process of doing this and I figured I'd warn people that the newer gates tensioners are very weak. Mine snapped at the hex key part with minimal warning while trying to tension. I tried replicating the circumstances with the original tensioner (also gates) and I had to put in a LOT of force too get it to break. Bought a replacement from VW made by litens which looks to be a much beefier design. Just FYI for anyone doing this.

Thanks, great job on the video and also on all the reference information for parts, tools and torques. Note: The amazon tool kit is currently not available and the EBay kit cannot be shipped to the USA, but that is not your fault... There are a few more items you did not show or write down? -- 1. The change interval for the belt/water pump. 2. the book value time for the entire job. Many repair shops overcharge on the parts (full retail and administration fee... BIG profit here) and the time (more unearned profit). With this information you can calculate the actual cost of the job. The book value is a not-to-exceed number for BELOW average mechanics so that the customer is not over-charged on time. The automotive industry has taken this as the time charging value for every job even if they spent less actual time on the job. This type of behavior is unethical for professionals such as lawyers and engineers. Imagine if your lawyer charged you more billing time than they actually spent! (Reference: book/movie "The Firm" The firm overcharged and sent invoices/bills to their clients in the US mail making their billing mail fraud!)

The correct way To time/tension these correctly the cam and fuel pump pully should be lossened before tensionong the belt. There is a TPI for gates tensioners fitted to these engines going faulty. Best to stick with genuine kits or INA kits that use the litenes tensioner. Bleeding the system should be done with diagnostic program like ODIS. Have had to bleed loads of systems After other garages or diy mechanics just fill up the coolant with out correctly bleeding the sytem. They are normally ok for a week or two then just pressure up and chuck coolant out if not bleed with diagnostics.

I miss the sense of crank aretation tool (point with marker should be enough) because the teeths on the belt won't let you make it wrong if the cam and IP timing is fixed with the tool... On older engines with variable cam (IP) timing pulley make the crank aretation tool sense. Just my point of view... Very good manual! Thank you for sharing!

This has helped very much with my 2015 VW Jetta TDI S. Thank you very much. I have a question I'm hoping you can answer though. The bottom crank sprocket lines up and the high pressure sprocket tabs line up and I can put a pin there and the tool in the bottom just fine. What do I do if the crank shaft sprocket at the top doesn't line up to put a pin in it but the other two do?
@diydaly
@diydaly 3 жыл бұрын
How far is it out? You could be 180 degrees out .. if so turn the crankshaft one more full rotation then you should find all 3 line up .. (you get 2 full rotations of the crankshaft to 1 of the camshaft) if it’s only a little bit out (ie 1 tooth) then pin the other 2 , remove the belt then adjust it slightly so you can put the pin in

Absolutely fantastic video, well explained and has plenty of detail to give you the confidence to carry out this kind of task yourself for any amateur car mechanics! Found that my fuel pump pulley and crankshaft pulley were slightly out of sync with the camshaft pulley, which made me a little nervous reassembling and turning over the engine once fully built! However, all seems good so far! I found I could put the fuel pump pulley timing pin in and the crankshaft pin, I managed to slide a small Allen key into camshaft pulley pin hole which did the job. Out of curiosity, what would be the symptoms/effects of an engine with the timing out? Many thanks again! Update: got a solid engine management light and flashing glow plug light come up on the dashboard. Test drove the car up and down the road and seemed fine. Any suggestions?
