2,000 Subscriber Special: Part Two - Dan's 1982 Ford Capri 2.8 Injection - Lloyd Vehicle Consulting

For the second part of our 2,000 Subscriber Special, channel viewer and Capri expert Dan brought along his 1982 Ford Capri 2.8 Injection (yes, it is the one from the Twin Cam channel) so that I could have a close look at it and take a drive out with him. It turned into quite a long video. Dan previously supplied the 1986 Ford Capri 1.6 Laser you may have seen on the channel last year. Apologies for the terrible sound! I saw it in person at the NEC last weekend, and the video with it in will be going live on the channel tomorrow. Dan has now bought a different Capri, which I hope to go and film soon. Great vid. The 4 speed was called a type 5. It’s same box as used in the 3.0. I’ve recently pulled my Injection Special out off storage and it’s now back on the road.

Thanks very much indeed! I have heard Ford four speed rear wheel drive gearboxes of this era referred to variously as the Type N, Type 4 and Type 5, so I stayed well away from actually giving it a name in the video, although I know that the five speed was the Type 9, like the Mark II Granada facelift. Those Injection Specials are lovely!

It's a gearbox worth naming, my X reg 4 speed had such a fast but precise gearchange, just like butter as the saying goes. I later had a five speed and it wasn't a patch on the earlier car. I do seem to remember the four speed had it's origins in the famous Corsair 2000E box.

@@seancooke4127 , unfortunately, the Capri was not such a popular car at the end, and few people wanted them at the prices they were asking for the 280 Brooklands in particular, which is why it took a long time to sell them. People much preferred the Escort RS Turbo and the Sierra Cosworth at that time.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting Little did they know that they would be able to sell them for £50,000 to £60,000 in 2016. They could have stored them in a shed for 30 years.

@@seancooke4127 , yes, as I mentioned in the video we filmed today, Wheeler Dealers picked up a Capri with an MOT in 2003 for under £500. That does not happen today.

Now that's what I call a proper car. I had my 1.6 Laser for 22 years but sadly I have never driven a 2.8 injection and I remember when you could buy an early 2.8 in the 90s for about £500 but I know the price now is a little more than that. Glad you pointed out the hazard warning light switch which is a bit fiddly to locate when you have a genuine breakdown, trust me I know.

Yes, the hazard warning light is one of my favourite things about a Capri for some bizarre reason. I do intend to cover a Laser too at some point, as you know, but before that, something else may be coming up!

I think that Dan is more of a Lewis Collins fan! I drove a Forest Green 2.8 Injection for the first time a few days after I met up with Dan for the third part of the 2,000 Subscriber Special, which is now up on the channel. It was brilliant!

What a beauty. I almost bought a Capri as my first car back in the late 80s. It was a 1977 lowly and dreaded Capri 1.3 !!! .... I got a Morris Ital instead :o)

Great to see these kept alive and running. I had a 1985 2.8i which I still sometimes miss driving. It had a custom made exhaust which sounded incredible. Haven’t seen it since I sold it so I hope it’s still alive 🤘🏻

If you look at the government MOT database, and you have the registration number to hand, then you should be able to see if it is still on the road.

Beautiful car. A turbo on a 4 speed box. Wouldn't work out well tho and would be cring out for a 5th gear. But what a bute I did have a 2.0 lazer black A reg. And loved it.

Yes, those four speed gearboxes would need to be quite strong, like the one in the Porsche 911 Turbo! I do have a Laser coming up on the channel at some point next year, I believe....

I had the last known registered 4 cog 2.8 i. They switched to the 5 speed in February 1983 and my car was a A-Reg August 1983 car. It was my second Capri after I had a 2.0S back in 1987. Still my fav car to this day.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting Last time I looked my 2.8i was still on the road. I had it for 5 years....1990 to 1995. Sold it when my first son was on his way. £1500!!!! and it was still mint with 60k on the clock. Fast forward to 2003 and I passed it on my journey down to Padstow, Cornwall. Pulled over and had a chat with the owner. He was with the guy who bought it off me...and subsequently owned it himself. He offered it me back for the same price....£1500. If only I had the space etc....

@@grahamevans9606 , we are an extremely Capri friendly channel here, as you have probably noticed, and I cannot believe that since I was a student in 2002-3 and discovered The Professionals (and therefore the Capri scene) for the first time that prices have gone up quite so much. Hindsight is always a funny thing, isn't it?

The car I always promised myself, but never had. Even put deposit on a 2.0L in 1980, my then boss said was time I had a company car but Cortina 80, not Capri if dealer would swap order company would refund me my deposit. In those days no taxation on company vehicle so Cortina it was!

Interestingly, in June 1980, the fourth series of The Professionals started filming with little notice, and they could no longer use the Escort RS2000 as the Mark III Escort was coming out, so Doyle needed a new car. They spend ages driving around trying to find his car, as clearly the production team weren't ready with his new transport. The green Cortina 80 seen in the episode was supposed to be his new one, but it looked a bit pedestrian, so eventually they gave him a Capri 3.0 S as well. I think I know what you would have preferred!
