While driving at Pelican Point in Namibia, Naude and Antoine from Ocean Conservation Namibia (www.ocnamibia.org) noticed a young seal pup entangled in a big ball of thick fishing line. The pup was on the move towards the sea so the activists lost no time in jumping out and chasing him. Naude managed to catch the pup by hand, while at the same time Antoine caught a second pup that was running past him, with a white plastic packaging strap stuck around her neck.
The pup Naude had was extremely bound up in the line, and it took them a while to free him. The line was so tight that they struggled to lift it enough to cut it off.
As soon as the lines were off they went to Antoine's seal, still waiting in the net. The net got full of sand, causing the zipper to jam up. They decided to rather pull the seal out and work on her free-hand. Naude managed to cut the strap with his Leatherman Raptor shears without getting bitten.
Thanks to all the extremely generous donations from all over the world, our new net is currently being built in Seattle and will hopefully be ready for use soon. 🦭
