Bowfin or as Cajun say, “choupick” sound like shoe pick! Keep em alive and cook the meat instantly after cleaning or it gets mushy and that’s why they callem mud fish. If it does get 30min-1hr old just make fish cakes out of it. It’s sticky like ground beef but absolutely delicious and hard to catch too. Nice choupick

ALWAYS enjoy your angling 🎣 expeditions M HAV! JUST a couple of suggestions for future fishing 🎣 challenges: 1. Have a time limit/a catch limit on each lure/crank baits used, so you have to use more lures. 2. JUST living off the fish you've caught it's abit boring. How about throwing in a bit of wild foraging for your greens etc? ALSO is it true that if you crush Poison Sumac & throw it on the water it will stun fish & bring them to the surface? LOVED the wild scenery where you were! ( The caretaker/ janitor~Offley Place Country Hotel 🏨 Hertfordshire 🦌 🚜 🏴🇬🇧)

In Louisiana, we call those bowfin or chouqique. THey are good, but are challenging. Keep them live as much as possible and don't rinse them in water, or else they get mushy. Grill or fry immediately. They are very tasty. And fight like crazy. I've never caught a small one. Only big ones. Enjoy. Love your videos. I wait for them daily.

For the future if you ever eat one, the key to eating mudfish is to keep it alive and don't put it on ice. They are pretty good eating. If you put it on ice, the meat gets mushy

Bowfin, or what you call mudfish, are really tasty BUT you need to eat then asap after you dispatch them or they get mushy. Mushy meat can still make great fish cakes though! I catch most of mine on fresh cut bluegill for bait and even small live bluegill right up next to weedlines. Sure you'll get a catfish here and there too but nothing wrong with that!

Huddling around a camp stove and bundling up saying it's getting really cold at 56° is WILD 😂 I love 40s and 50s, and can do just fine at 30° in shorts and a T-shirt. You came from Idaho for crying out loud! 😂 Of course we don't have Bojangles up here in Oregon, but Popeyes has the best fast food fries in my opinion. The way you describe Bojangles fries is exactly how I describe Popeye's fries. They're so damn good. Wish they sold them by the box or bag full!
