Thanks for this!! I’m 26 now in Australia and have started my pre med journey, should hopefully be finished with pre med and med school by 33. I’m working part time as a carer in a nursing home so I can support myself through med school. Wish me luck!

Wow. I'm going to start my pre-med at 25 which I'm awfully conscious with since my cousins started medschool at the age of 22. So reading this comment made me happy and motivated. Thank you for this!

As an FNP and in my mid-40 as premed student I was thrilled to be admitted to an osteopathic school which was my very first application and now in my first year of residency grateful for the opportunities that I have had. If I had to do it over again, I will do it in a blink of an eye. But I would like to share that the individuals contemplating on this journey should be prepared ) and I am sure are able to handle hiccups on the way - ie student loan, some individuals who don't think you belong.

@susan akapo I know I am 3+ years out from this comment, but when you mention some individuals who feel like you don’t belong, who are you referring to, if you don’t mind me asking. How would they know if you were an NP or to what were you referring to in that aspect?

I started Med school at the age of 20 and became a full fledged licensed MD at 25. It sounds pretty cool but thinking in retrospect, I feel I lacked life experiences to deal with what would come after. So I think starting medical school at a later age doesn’t seem to be a bad idea.

❓Obviously most young med students are likely to be single. As an older individual in my early 30’s I’m happily married & we’ve been together for 13 years. Does anyone know how significant a strain med school & residency has on a marriage? Just wondering if anyone else might know? ❓Thanks

Wouldn't it depend on how much money you have? Graduating with hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt or not, for someone of higher age

Depends on how you’re going to finance your education and pay for other expenses and being willing to give up close to a decade of your life. I’m mid 30s with kids and mortgage- decided against it

@1MinuteFlipDoc6 жыл бұрын
short answer - 42 is the cut off (realistically).
@djmightymel6 жыл бұрын
1MinuteFlipDoc why do u say that
@1MinuteFlipDoc6 жыл бұрын
42 is realistically the oldest you want to go to med school, considering school + residency + your age you'll be when you are finally on your own (50) + school debt/loans. most people are looking forward to retirement at that age. most patients don't want a 50 year old doc just starting out in her/his career. if being a doc is absolutely the ONLY thing you want to do in life even when you are old and ur willing to be broke and studying nights and weekends for the next 10 years. go for it!
@krispykreme38226 жыл бұрын
1MinuteFlipDoc lol No.... Most people are not expecting to retire by the time they hit 50😂
@1MinuteFlipDoc6 жыл бұрын
no, but they are planning on it (saving, investing, reducing debt) if they are professionally employed.
