Queen of the South are known as 'The Doonhamers'. The nickname of Doonhamers' comes from the position of Dumfries in the south of Scotland with its residents talking of returning 'Down home' or 'Doon hame'. The club's motto is the same as the towns of 'A Lore Burne', meaning to prepare against outside attack.

You should do Galabank in the spring. Behind the seated stand it’s beautiful by the River Annan. It’s a fantastic club, The pies are amazing! Queens, I saw the worst game of footy ever there. Queens vs hibs 0-0. Seeing the ground again induced terrible flashbacks and undid years of therapy. Biggest remaining terrace in Scotland. Worth a visit. Thanks for posting

I’m a Yank and I’m so incredibly jealous of all the historical stadiums over there. We (or rather the club management) over here have developed a bad habit of demanding new stadia every few decades. Thankfully college football bucks that trend for the most part.

Get yourself to Brunton Park Carlisle! You’ll love it! Once upon a time we used to sing ‘sh@t ground no fans’ at most of our opposition. Our ground was even used in the excellent film ‘The Dammed United’ to represent an old ground. You might enjoy the work of photographer Stuart Clarke. His homes of football work is incredible charting a change in stadia post Hillsborough, through the 1990’s. Grounds and fan culture. My favourite photo is Sunset over Wigan. In Springfield parks old away end.

Brilliant Sam. 👍 You've finally gotten round to visiting my local Dumfriesshire teams. QOS (aka "The Doonhamers") are the team I support, 2nd only to Rangers, and I also always keep an eye on Annan's results, always hoping they do well. I can't find any info on why Annan have the flaming torch on their crest either, but I do know that has been their crest since at least 1978, and possibly earlier.

Presumably the torch is simply a reference to athletics and the fact that the club is called Annan Athletic. It does not appear the club were formed out of an athletics club so this is probably just a name.

You should get in contact with clubs before you go. If they had time to prepare they might be able to let you in to see the stadium and also give you information about the club. You should visit Loch Ness FC and Orkney FC who play in the North Caledonian League. Orkney are the only senior football club in Scotland not on the mainland.

Dumfries IS "The Queen of the South". It's an ancient name for the town from long before there was organised football. That sort of thing is common in Scotland. Hearts = "The Heart of Midlothian" = Edinburgh, Raith Rovers (Kirkaldy) and Albion Rovers (Coatbridge). Morton tacked on "Greenock" in the 1990s. Or in other cases the patron saint of the town such as St. Johnstone (Perth), St. Mirren (Paisley).

Fingers crossed you get access this time. Queen of The South are a very interesting club to me aswell plus what amazing artwork outside the ground reminds me a bit of the murals you get in Belfast. The Oval in East Belfast is my favourite Old School football ground. Worst ground I have ever been to was the Old Dean Coart In Bournemouth it's changed a lot now it ued to be extremely dusty we went back in the Summer of 97 me & my Dad for a friendly between Bournemouth & West Ham United a extremely youing Rio Ferdinand played that night he then went to Bournemouth on loan the following season & the rest is history as they say.
