Queen of the South are known as 'The Doonhamers'. The nickname of Doonhamers' comes from the position of Dumfries in the south of Scotland with its residents talking of returning 'Down home' or 'Doon hame'. The club's motto is the same as the towns of 'A Lore Burne', meaning to prepare against outside attack.

I’m a Yank and I’m so incredibly jealous of all the historical stadiums over there. We (or rather the club management) over here have developed a bad habit of demanding new stadia every few decades. Thankfully college football bucks that trend for the most part.

Get yourself to Brunton Park Carlisle! You’ll love it! Once upon a time we used to sing ‘sh@t ground no fans’ at most of our opposition. Our ground was even used in the excellent film ‘The Dammed United’ to represent an old ground. You might enjoy the work of photographer Stuart Clarke. His homes of football work is incredible charting a change in stadia post Hillsborough, through the 1990’s. Grounds and fan culture. My favourite photo is Sunset over Wigan. I can't find any info on why Annan have the flaming torch on their crest either, but I do know that has been their crest since at least 1978, and possibly earlier.

Dumfries IS "The Queen of the South". It's an ancient name for the town from long before there was organised football. That sort of thing is common in Scotland. Hearts = "The Heart of Midlothian" = Edinburgh, Raith Rovers (Kirkaldy) and Albion Rovers (Coatbridge). Morton tacked on "Greenock" in the 1990s. Or in other cases the patron saint of the town such as St. Johnstone (Perth), St. Mirren (Paisley).
