Hi Travis, the last two live chats have been awesome. I really like your "style" and openness during these live chats. It's fun and refreshing. Also, it's super interesting hearing your perspective. Thanks!

Kayla looked very serious and intense, but after listening her here, I think she is pretty funny, and kind of silly (in the good sense) haha It was a nice chat, I enjoyed it. Oh, and Travis, you definitely should do that 5 grappling styles event! I would watch it for sure!

Great live chats with Travis! My question is do you think doing weights prior to a comp is a good idea or a bad idea? Normally I'd leave the weight out 3 weeks prior to a comp as it breaks down the muscles and makes you less effective. Also I never understood why athletes sit in a sauna prior to a match just to make the weight as this really impairs performance. Thanks!

Everyone is different and I don't think there is a right or wrong way as long as it's what the athlete believes is best!

I'd really, really want to see senseis in judo having S&C education. Like sometimes the basic training is so backwards to sports and exercise science because that's how they learned to do it, that's what others did. Let alone the top athletes. But like it's not uncommon that the warmup with some senseis is a fitness test, hypertrophy and endurance test before even touching technical stuff or something that's supposed to demand power. It's sometimes more like trying to break the students more than build them up. Starting from the freaking warm up. Your talk about how hard you've trained and how you've gotten injured just from repetition made me think about it. Of course the top athletes need to push themselves, but injuries and excess fatigue isn't necessarily the optimal way to push someone. Same for if you keep classes to young people or young athletes, you gotta build them up and not try to drive them down before you even teach them. Judo itself is already pretty heavy if your day is full of newaza for a beginner, you don't need to pre-fatigue them. Like what's the point if there's separate randori practice sessions too, and the students need to skip just the basic classes because they're so beat down they can't recover. Then you miss all the technical work practice that's critical to get better. I'm so fueled up by this because we even had a fresh world champ in our class being exhausted by the warm up, and there were all kind of people from different parts of life in the class. What's the point. Would be happy to hear Kayla again some day, seems like you guys have war stories for days, and also so much experience to dig out and share. And for the first couple of minutes of the finals I thought Kayla was a leftie, half of the match looked so odd.

Can you guys sit in seiza since knee surgery? It has been 2 years since acl surgery from a Hiza guruma and I still can't seiza.

Yes we both can and without any issues. You might want to find a new PT to help you. That shouldn't happen with a simple ACL Surgery.
