And the cc advantage. At the time the yamaha yz400f got a 150cc boost over the 250s. 2 stroke riders hated it right away but it was way easier to ride with the torque it had. Between the cc advantage and the EPA it was just easier to make 4 strokes. It's funny that all dirt bike magazines are reflecting on the mistake of going to 4 strokes and how much they cost over comparable 2 strokes.

I get the bigger grin when riding a 450 and having this massive power eveywhere, all the time, ready to explode without having to wait for the revs to build up. A 250 2t feels weak in comparaison even you can get good acceleration once it finally gets to the top of the power curve.

@@Wide000 I hear ya pal, Its just i grew up in the 90s and love the power delivery of the 250 2stroke, Im sure the 450s are much better in lots of ways, but its the powerband that makes the cheesy grin, and that feeling you just cant replicate with a safe, steady acceleration of the 450 4stroke. But everyone has their own favorites mate. It doesn't matter what you ride!, What matters is, that you ride!!. Peace

@@anonymous2065 Agreed. I am a vet rider myself and also like the 2t. And I am no faster on a 450, just amazed by the massive power each time I ride my older CRF. The best compromise after trying all displacement, 2t and 4t, is the 350. It won't waste you as much as a 450, almost as fast overall, but lighter feeling, linear power, easy to ride, rev to the moon. You can ride it as smootly or aggresively as you want, and it will work in both case. I love mine. Perfect vet bike.

@@anonymous2065 4 strokes are more superior, it has stability to go beyond the top speed of 2 strokes. More displacement, more power, 4 strokes can handle more compression, whereas 2 strokes is prone to overheat, that's the reason why there is no 1000cc 4 cylinders 2 strokes, it will overheat in seconds, dead.

That what you showed wasn't inertia, it was gyroscopic Precession. Rotational inertia is the effect you describe when a rotating object doesn't want to change it's angular speed.
@StepstoPodium4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for spending the time to give some feedback! I knew this question would come up sooner or later :P I excluded Gyroscopic Precession for a reason, you have a fixed axis of rotation (both wheels on the ground impose a rotation axis). Besides that, although we are used to handle rotational inertia in a planar context, we also have rotational inertia in a spacial context where the inertia matrix can explain this phenomenon. I did my research and these were the conclusion I made and I'm pretty positive it checks out! but if you have any other points of view, please let me know, I would be delighted to go back and forth on this :)
@3SPR1T4 жыл бұрын
@@StepstoPodium But this effect still hasn't to do with the rotating inertia of an engine. (except for the wheels that keeps the bike upright) I think a better way to explain that would be a flywheel. When you try to rotate a heavy flywheel you need force to get it moving, that's what defines mass and it's also hard to stop a free spinning flywheel (resistance in change of motion). Just like the added mass of a camshaft, cam-chain etc. Procession on the other hand works only when you have a already spinning mass. You have no procession on a still bearing BUT you have still the resistance in motion when you try to get the bearing spinning. Inertia is always there procession is not. ;D
@StepstoPodium4 жыл бұрын
Like I said, in this case the procession is not the explanation because one of the necessary conditions is not met. And the example you gave about the fly wheel only explains what you are stating, not the resistance in orientation change, which the spacial inertia would explain

2 strokes are not easier maintenance and less expensive, cuz u rebuild them twice as often and spend a lot of money on oil to pre-mix with your 25mpg if u ride a lot. Even the TPI fuel pumps have to be replaced at 65 hours. Carbs are always maintenance and drama, jetted wrong/need cleaning; then theirs power valve adjustments and dented pipes. FI 4 strokes need the valves checked once a riding season if not racing, and go 200hours/5000 miles before a rebuild equaling or beating the cost of riding a 2 stroke that much, plus the hours not spent on maintenance.

Yes we can't go as fast in a straight line, don't compare 1980's technology with today's computer engineered missiles. I miss having a 750cc four banger, torque and easy to ride. But I wouldn't give up my 2t which are loads of fun. Rebuilt both 4t and 2t, the 2 are easy, until you start playing with port timings, squish and back pressure. The 4's are just packed with loads of parts, easier to tune, just really heavy.

2T is powerful cuz of the Power Valve... Tho the F1 engineers came up with the idea of making 2T F1 cars cuz they are lighter, faster, more powerful and more durable. The problem is that they want to make it with direct injection and high rpm... that isn't a problem for 4T but it is for 2T because lets take like 18000 RPM which means that in 4T the injection valves open/close and get a slap of heat 150 times a second. They can endure that... but 2T can't because it does a complete power cycle with every up/down the piston does so that would mean that the valves would open/close and get a heat slap 300 times per sec. So the engineers need to figure out what material they should make the valves from that will endure that much heat first.

You just like all others cannot explain how a two-cycle engine actually functions. Port induction two-cycle engine are self supercharging meaning that they make boost well above atmospheric pressure before the engine fires. A 4 cycle engine can only suck air and will never make any boost at all ...my education from all of this was taught by the man himself pop Yoshimura at the R&D Training Center for the first Honda Elsinore CR250R

I raced dirt bikes in the woods for several years back in the late 80's-early 90's in (tight woods in N. Alabama and S. Tennessee mostly), some four stroke bikes and some two stroke bikes, and my experience was that the four stroke bikes were too heavy and wwwaaaaaay too hot to ride during hot weather, and that fighting that horsepower, weight, and heat would make me three times as tired by the end of the ride as the two stroke bikes made me feel. The two stroke bikes were lighter and much easier to maneuver in tight woods, plus they were water cooled and weren't hot at all to ride even during really hot weather. Four stroke bikes are great for fire roads and dirt roads, but not for tight woods riding (IMO).

2 stroke make much more pollution... Then a 4 stroke... of course now you have.. Fuel Metering on the intake side... Some do it by injection... Some do it with a valve.... Have a great day

2 and 4 strokes both have there purpose there is simplify no better one the both have flaws there’s a reasons y we use both designs because if 1 was better we would use it only for example I have a outboard that was made in 1960 this outboard is a 2stroke and is 25 hp weighing at 60 lb it is powerful and fast but I have a new 4 stroke outboard from 2015 both made by murcury and there both 25 hp but it weighs 150 lb it has more power but the 2stroke offers a faster acceleration

2 strokes forever! The only pain in the ass with 2 strokes is that you can't do engine braking... well, you can, unless you want your engine get screwed up...

It's a little misleading to equate "a 4 stroke's power stroke is more powerful than a 2 stroke's power stroke" with "a 4 stroke is more powerful than a 2 stroke". Your bike is moving through all the strokes, not just the power stroke, and every non-power stroke is lowering the power/stroke ratio. A 2 stroke makes power in half of its strokes while a 4 stroke makes power in one quarter of its strokes. Whether you're on the 2 stroke or 4 stroke train, you might as well be accurate.

@lukewarmwater64123 жыл бұрын
honestly. I think that I have been seeing the 2 stroke become obsolete for my whole life. two strokes used to have the better horsepower to wieght ratio, but these days we have 4 stroke snowmobiles that put two strokes to shame, so this is obviously no longer true. you can put a modern 4 stroke any place a 2 stroke used to go..... stop saying 'explosion' when you mean ignition. there is no exposion. there is a controlled burn. gasoline cant burn fast enough to explode. what I mean is it is not an explosive. it does not explode. pistons would be destroyed if it did.

125cc 2 stroke bike is more fun to ride than a 500cc 4 stroke bike the sound, the insane powerband of a 2 stroke it's just more fun to ride.

The one that does twice the rotations for the same amount of work is absolutly not more efficient. You forgot about all the power lost wile having to rotate all those extra parts. lol The record for most power per displacement Isn't a a 4joke and it never will be.

2 stroke should not be made and that's why we got more 4 stroke build more then 2 strokes and that's why government has to plan to stop make more 2 strokes on any bike/quads and there so many many kids gets injured from 2 strokes power and glad to see more 4 stroke never give up like 2 strokes and I never like 2 strokes and I'm always 4 stroke person
